Don't worry too much that the instructions don't specifcally mention guinea pigs, the important thing is the dosage. My vet has given me stuff that the box says is for cats, but always been very very careful to prescribe correct dose for piggies. Hope all goes well for your piggy. x

Yes, My piggy was prescribed Metacam but only has 0.2ml once a day as it is for dogs. It came with a massive syringe but I use a 1ml one as the one that came with the Metacam is too big to put in her mouth. It is very fiddly to do though lol. My vet however, explained to me that there could be side effects and to stop treatment straight away if any occured. She also explained that it wasn't a licensed drug for guinea pigs but could still be used if done properly and given in the correct dosage :)

Tiacil was the first antibiotic eye drop that my piggie was prescribed for the ulcer but couldn't remember the name. I used this on her ulcer for around 3 weeks and after just one week the ulcer had halved in size. The only reason for the change of antibiotic was because the eye then became infected. Baytril is an oral antibiotic. This can be presrcribed straight into your piggie's mouth. None of my piggie's have had metacam but I believe it's an anti-inflammatory/painkiller. Hope the meds help :)

I'm so sorry for TIny and you! By all means, try to keep her eye!

But don't panic at the thought of a blind GP. Eyesight is not their strongest sense, they soon adjust with their whiskers, sense of smell and hearing.

Best of luck to you both!

Just a quick update and to thank you all for your advice and well wishes. Tiny is now snuggled up in her cage with her sisters awww. She has been happy all afternoon and evening, playing and eating well. Her eye looks a bit better already, it is no longer bright yellow, its now more of a dull cloudy and a small piece of her eye lid is now visable, which was not before. I am just keeping my fingers crossed this improvement continues. Will of course keep you all updated. Tks and hugs :)

Forgot to add, I checked all the meds out with my new vet, and he agreed they were the best course of action of now, so phew on that.

Really good that the piggy seems to be showing some improvement already and that your new vet is being helpful.
I hadn’t heard of the first two meds and have only used Baytril for respiratory infections so I posted a question on another forum (didn’t give the name of this forum or anyones individual details etc) and asked about these three medications for use in damaged/infected eyes.
One of the members said that their vet had prescribed Baytril for an eye infection. (No-one had used the other two but no-one threw their hands up in horror or anything). A couple of people mentioned Chloramphenicol eye drops. (This is the only thing that I have used for eye problems).

One point someone made was that it was important to keep the surface of the eye moist to help healing. They used Broline drops for that. Perhaps ask your vet what they would recommend?

Edited to say.....just had another look back at the forum and someone has said that vitamin E drops (snip open a vit E capsule) one drop a day for 10 days helps get rid of any scars on the surface of the eye later on (again...check this with your vet).

Oh, I do hope Tiny continues to improve. Some years ago, my wee Kurt (RIP) developed a hideous eye infection, very quickly. It went from not even noticing anything wrong when I left for work to looking like something from a horror film when I got home that evening.

Rang the Pet Rodent Centre first, put some contact lens saline in just to keep it moist over night and took him in first thing in the morning. They have close contact with the most fab vet in Cardiff. Unfortunately, antibiotics didn't work and he had to have the eye removed, but he recovered well and despite already being over 5 (not sure exactly how old as he was a rescue) he lived a further 2 1/2 years, still bossing his companion Will around. He did have a short period of being "depressed" after the scars healed, but he perked back up and apart from a few dental problems in later life, he was a happy chappy.

Ironically, about a year later, Will got a scratch on the eye, which I noticed quickly. And my super vet (who has a brilliant cage side manner - I swear Will knew what he was saying to him!) checked him over very thoroughly and prescribed antibiotic ointment and drops that cleared it up within a week. What a relief!

Fingers crossed for you both!

Good Morning. Just to let you know Tiny blinked this morning when I put her drops in, surely this must be a good sigh? as before her eye was so swollen she was unable to close that eye.

Anyway have to go to work will update later. Tks all again.

It's good to know that Tiny's eye seems to be better. Fingers are crossed :)

Another update: Tiny is getting better and better every day, the eye is starting to crust over slightly now, which the vet said is a very good sign. I am visiting the Vet again tomo, so I will give you are more details on her recovery afterwards.

Thank you all again for your help and support. 6):)

I'm really glad that Tiny is doing well and that you found a better vet!

Get well soon!

x
