Well Jack is certainly going through the wars.

Came home night to find that his previously unhindered no eye socket is now a problem. He had his eye removed before he came to me, and nearly every vet I've seen since has said it was right poor job. Yep I know, but he has me to look after him now. However, he sometimes has milky fluid (not the usual eye cleaning fluid) escape from a gap.

However tonight, it was right very white and creamy, with a smell. I've been topping him up with syringe feeding because he isn't in great health these days. He is clearly in pain - obvious tonight so I've administered some Metacam tonight to give him some comfort and ideally he'll need some Baytril as an antibiotic to deal with I guess some kind of infection. I'd find it hard to believe he's been scratching himself to cause the eye to be an issue.

So what do the good peeps on here think?

I do wonder whether we are getting to the end of the road with Jack now, so hard to keep weight on him, he's weighed each night. He's not taking that much of an interest in his veggies.

Thanks all.x

Aw, poor boy, I am so sorry to here he’s got an infection. Sending healing Hugs to you and Capt Jack x

Poor old boy I hope he can get some antibiotics and has a bit more time left, but you will know best when its his time to go. Hugs and wheeks especially from Jezzy floof who just finished a course of nasty baytril x

Poor old chap. Not got any answers Lil, but will keep you and the Captain in my thoughts x

Healing wheaks to the lovely Captain, Lil. I know whatever you decide to do will be the right thing :hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

This can be sorted, but you are going to need a better antibiotic than baytril. Ideally, you want Zithromax. If your vet won't give it, get an appointment to see Simon or Kim Maddock next week. xx
Thank you. I'll put a call into the vet tomorrow morning and see if I can get hold of some. I've cleaned his eye socket with saline this evening. I'd really like to get it sorted locally as I'm going to struggle to get down to Northampton next week. I can normally scrounge a few hours out of my day if needs be but next week is a 'no go area'. I'll use my powers of persuasion!

I do worry for Jack though, he's the apple of my eye (excuse the pun).

Thank you everyone, your emotional support is always very much appreciated.

If I lived closer Lil I'd pop over with something alcoholic, some sympathy and a cuddle for both you and the Captain.

It needs getting on top of quickly as abscesses can do a lot of damage to the bone. I recently had a piggy stay here, whose owner had been battling a nasty retrobulbar abscess for months, using baytril. The abscess had caused a sinus to form in the bone, so when the guinea pig ate, food came out through his eye socket! Rather alarming to see, although the piggy seemed happy enough.

Sorry for hijacking but oh my goodness, was the piggy ok?

Sending you hugs and healing vibes to Capt. Jack. I hope you can get him sorted soon.

It upset the owner, more than it upset the pig. He did get sore around the eye though and needed barrier cream. Owner rang me and I suggested she came to Simon. Simon tried to close the sinus, in the mouth but although it reduced the amount that went through, it never resolved completely.

Poor Captain Jack.
He’s really having a rough time.
Tough on you too.
Holding you in my heart
