Eye Removal. Any Post Op Advise Appreciated

Hi thank you. It is closed her socket. Y.day she was a little off her food but just assumed she had enough of the sight of veg as I have been giving her more Tha I normally would but I found her bowl empty this morning so she had ate during the night so wasn't to worried. I didn't get her out straight away today like normal as was so busy but gave her meds to her on a cucumber and she ate it and as her eye on first glance seemed ok didn't think much but an hour later noticed she hadn't ate the rest of her veg and she wasn't wheeking or coming out her house so got her out. The smell was what I noticed first then saw the whitest discharge coming from her eye area bless her. Losing her appetite is a huge worry as I find it so much easier getting her meds on a cucumber and her eating it. I would literally have to force syringe her otherwise. She not really drinking either. I will have to hope if they give antibiotics they do the job. Heart wrenching seeing her poorly.
 
So definite infection. Vet said it can be quite common post op. I guess it would be. They put her under gas removed a stitch and squeezed out as much puss as possible. They did mention in her Thursday check that it was just slightly swollen but put down to post op swelling as no sign on infection then. Shot of AB and more for next 6 days plus keep up with pain relief and also got some probiotics and she back Thursday for nxt check but sooner if need be. She must be relieved already from the puss because soon as she was back home she went straight for a carrot in her bowl. Vet said her appetite should start picking up again in next few hours now she on AB but if it don't pick up by tomorrow to give her a call. She said it healing very well though otherwise just hope this is it now .
 
Oh bless her, did the vet leave it open this time? what antibiotic has she been given?
 
No not fully. They removed a stitch that was it and not re-stitched that bit. I guess with luck that means if it happens again they can do what they did today with ease as she did say guinea pigs can heal very quickly and if it had fully healed it would have made it a bit trickier getting the infection out. It is baytril to have 0.3 ml a day. I hope I manage to get it in her mouth as last time I tried to strings her I didn't manage it so find it easier putting her pain relief on cucumber but the ABs she never said if I could put it on food or not just straight into her mouth. She gave me 3 sachets of the probiotics, she said can give in 3 equal parts but could I make a whole sachet and store in fridge? Not done this before.
 
The probiotics need to be given at least an hour after the Baytril. Have a look at our syringe feeding guide as it may help you with your syringe technique. It is important that the antibiotic goes into her mouth as the infection will come back if she doesn't have the full course. Complete Syringe Feeding Guide
 
Ok i will look at that guide thanks. Glad you told me about the probiotics given an hour after as wasn't aware. I might practice a couple times with water first in a syringe so don't waste her AB incase it ends up all over her and not in her mouth. She needs some water anyway as she not drinking as much as she normally would.
 
It's because they kind of cancel each other out. That sounds like a good idea.
 
I will as on Monday. Thanks for letting me know. Tried syringe wasn't easy as expected. Fidgeted like mad. Wrapped her in towel and daughter held her in place but dud struggle. Some ended in mouth and fur. Tried getting some probiotics into her after as she is a bit late in that, over an hour, but she wasn't impressed with me. She didn't manage it all though due to my poor syringe skills. But eating a bit of cucumber now.
 
Just a quick one about probiotics. I have been given bio-lapis for Willow. Stringing her that y.day was not easy. Is it possible I could sprinkle it on a cucumber or 2 or does it have to be mixed with water? As I am just left with Willow I can't use a dropping from another pig so this is all I have.
 
Does it say anywhere on the instructions any other ways you can use it?

Or perhaps you can ring your vet and explain the difficulty with the syringe and see what they suggest?

Your vet should give you as many syringes as you need so if they haven't then ask for them.
As I have 8 piggies each week they get the P&H Probiotic C put into their water bottles and they all drink it down like it is whiskey or vodka :lol!:

I cannot offer any other suggestions however other members may come along who will be able to.

Thank you :) looks like I'm back at vets tomorrow :/ as she has started weeping puss again this evening although she seems ok. Her appetite is up again but putting the probiotic in her water bottle is out the question as she is not really drinking water from it. She hasn't had ant probiotic yet today as really don't want to struggle with her although managed to get the AB in her just. Not that its working if she is weeping once again. My emotions are becoming frazzled.
 
Oh and it just says to mix with water but was hoping it could be done on her food as I have read some can be done like that but not sure if it depends on the brand. With her eye area I'm having to be careful how I handle her around her face as it still healing and worried I could slip my hand what with her fidgeting about and hurt her. My 7 year old daughter is only person who can assist me but she does not put a good grip enough on piggy to keep her still.
 
I know you can sprinkle Avipro but am not sure about BioLapis. Am sorry she is poorly, I would ask the vet about Zithromax as it is more effective for abscesses.
 
There not even sure if it is an infection now. They think her body may be have a reaction to her stitches as a foreign body as the 'puss' does not look like a typical infection because it is not like a thick, cheesy looking fluid but more runny they said. Not sure what to think me personally. So today she went back under the gas for a re-clean and they have removed her stitches as she was pretty much healed anyway although it does not look 100% as clearly still some healing required but it has only been a week. She has a little hole looking thing I guess you can call it a drainage hole now. All I can do is keep it clean with cool boiled water for now. They mentioned another antibiotic but I'm not sure if one mentioned above unless another trade name but cant remember what it was. See how she gets on without the stitches and if it makes a difference.
 
I really can't remember. We are back before the week is out for a check up so will find out then as I feel she will probably be put on another AB.
 
Trying not to get hopes up but seeing some improvements especially today. There has been a huge reduction in weeping and today hardly much at all just a small amount this morning but I pressed along her eye area nothing came out and same again this evening whereas before it would just oooz out with a slightest of contact in that area. She has been eating LOADS past 2 days. Not stopped :) finally took some water from her bottle today although was not showing signs of dehydration anyway and she gave a little popcorn which was nice. Tricking AB into her through apples as vet said if I can put it on her food then try but it don't taste nice when I told her I was having issues getting the syringe into the feisty pig. Well she sussed when on a cucumber, lettuce and broccoli so I cut 3 cubes of apple and took the centre parts out put a 0.1 of the AB inside cube and added the centre parts back and it has worked. Owner-1 Piggy-0. A check up tmor. But hopefully we might be making progress :)
 
Thought I would share some photos of Willow. Both took earlier today and 9 days post op. She has lovingly been nicknamed pirate pig :D My daughter who is in the photo with Willow says that all the other pirate pigs should come and join Willow's crew :))

He would annoy her pretty quickly, have never known a pig to hump so much, even with one eye! Am sure Sophie would like to send him away for a bit.
 
Hehe! Poor Sophie. Willow would probably find him a shock actually then and it just dawned on me she has never met a male pig
 
Willow is having a case of diarrhea and lost of appetite. She is literally not eating anything. The lost of appetite has been on and off for a week now. She was given ABs for another week (been off them for 4 days now and diarrhea started y.day) and I noticed the lost if appetite began then as the first week on AB she was fine with normal stools and appetite. She gas pretty much been living on veg and fruit since op so not sure if that has caused the bad gut or the AB from the second week. So she isn't very happy. I stupidly didn't think and syringe fed her apple/carrot baby food earlier then realised worse thing to probably give with her gut. And I gave her a good 10ml or little more of that. Removed her veg etc from cage. Will start with the dry food mashed syringing later and probiotics. Hardly any urine output either but she was getting her fluids from cucumbers etc before. She keeps making a clicky nose with her mouth? What could this be? We are back at vets on thursday for check but can bring it forward. Don't know what else to do.don't have critical care and doubt my vet would sell it but could ask I guess.
 
hmm a bit of a sudden turn around she is eating again on her own. So think a bit of baby food may have helped perk her energy up a bit. She ate some hay and I tried to encourage her to eat her dry pellets without anything been done to them but wouldn't. I mashed pellets with water to see if she take it willingly and again no but was squeaking for veg which is best avoided at mo. So I grounded her dry pellets up to a mix of smaller lumps/power with no water and she is eating that. Not seen her eat her dry food since her op. Hopefully she is on mend I will not syringe feed for moment see how she goes. Might get her teeth looked at at nxt check up however. Makes me wonder why she will eat her pellets grounded up and not hard and with funny noise she making with her mouth has got me thinking. She normally wears her teeth down biting on her plastic house but she not done that in a few weeks.
 
Vets do sell Critical Care or Recovery food, either will do :) What pain relief is she on? If the clicking is actually her grinding her teeth, that is a pain response. She should still be on a low dose of Metacam post op. Please bring her vet's appointment forward if you can, if you ring tomorrow make sure they know it's urgent you see your vet as she is not eating properly.
 
I agree with bringing her appointment forward and getting her teeth checked. It is possible that her problems could be linked to tooth root issues which may have been what caused the eye removal in the first place?
 
Hi she is on metacam. She has been on it about 3 or 4 weeks ever since her op. We were going ti cut it down but then this infection thing came about suddenly so decided to keep her on it for the time being. She is still weeping but it hasn't got worse nor better. They still think it is a reaction to her stitches. To be fair when they removed most of the stitches the amount of weep did reduce. I took her back Thursday just gone and the vet said they were unable to remove all the stitches, i thought they had so that was a surprise. She said there were still some internal ones although during the visit she was able to see some poke out so decided to put her under the gas again for the 3rd time and pull out what she could. Poor Willow dreads the vets now she shakes like a leaf every time she goes. I mentioned another AB just in case but she was reluctant to prescribe due to being on one for 2 weeks. But yes I have started to wonder if now her eye problem is due to her teeth as her eye was bulging out. I would assume they would have checked that or I hope during the op since she said she had been checking her over for other problems well under so I assumed she had checked her teeth but I will be asking now. Sometimes it seems like something is bugging her like something is stuck in her teeth and she is moving her mouth all over the place trying to dislodge what ever it is. She was eating some of her dry food again not so long ago and got some less runny stools since so least that issue seems to be getting better.
