Dental Eye was removed and now teeth are causing issues:-(

He's had the operation to file down all the back teeth on Wednesday. This was the photo they took before when he was under and I believe all the back teeth were filed right down. It was re checked again today.
So they not sure what else is causing him to struggle to eat even though he desperately wants to. He keeps throwing his head back to try help it go down?

You only need them to be a fraction too long and the mouth won’t close. Which antibiotic was prescribed following the enucleation surgery?

Throwing the head around to try and get the food into position to swallow it, is classic dental! I truly believe there is still a dental issue here and until that is resolved your piggy isn't going to be able to eat. I have been running the dental sanctuary since 2011 and have seen so many piggies with dental disease and time and time again the guinea pigs have had unsuccessful dentals elsewhere and have been eating before they've even left the practice, after a dental by Simon Maddock. Simon can also carry out dental work without GA, so there isn't an anaesthetic for the piggy to get over.

We currently have a temporary resident from Devon, who arrived after having a dental, bloods taken and x-rays, amounting to well over £500, at a very well respected veterinary practice, but still he couldn't eat. After Simon filed his teeth, he was eating immediately.

He had baytril for quite a while after the eye was removed be sure the area was still draining out pus. It's still a bit weepy but apparently that's called? And we've been told to wipe it away daily. We did wonder if more baytril needed?

We were told they filed all back teeth right down to the gum so he is bound to be very sore:-( and will continue to be checked monthly?

We just need him to be able to eat as he so wants to but struggles. We are giving critical care formula 1ml every hour as it's all he will tolerate but he is still trying to nibble nuggets but struggles with cucumber or tomato etc.... I was holding the nugget for him to help him but as soon as it went in he throws head back as if he can't swallow it but does not choke thankgod! We are also giving water in syringe to help him

Please if it is in any way possible get him to Simon and Debbie. It really sounds like he still has dental issues. My Tim and Dulcie both had retrobulbar abscesses which were removed by Simon and they received amazing aftercare from Debbie. We had Tim another few years after and he would not have had that without them. We sadly lost Dulcie from an unrelated issue. If anyone can help your boy it is Simon.

I know but I just don't think it's possible for them but will ask them

Baytril isn't the best antibiotic for dealing with abscesses. When was the eye removed?
Mm bout four weeks ago possibly? He was on mega high dose of it to try save the eye before it was removed but the eye dried out. We were devastated:-(

It was initially thought there was a tumour behind the eye but it was an abscess. They drained it but it still was being squeezed by vet on the next visit to remove more pus and he was given more baytril for a long period of time and metacam. Not on antibiotics at the moment I don't think.

Please re-consider taking him to Simon Maddock, piggies travel remarkably well. Ours have clocked up 1,000’s of miles to no ill effect. My Ted used to fling his head back as though he was juggling food just like that when he had dental problems after a very poor GA dental from a local vet. We almost lost him and was at wits end and desperate until we heard about Simon. Took him there for a conscious dental, yes 300 miles each way, and he was back eating hay within 10 minutes! He has a quick dental every 2.5 months and is absolutely fine now. Good luck with your boy, do hope you can do his x

For piggies who aren't eating for themselves at all, I am to get about 100-120 mls of syringe food into them, per 24 hours.
So every hour needs to be less than an hour? Or give more on the hour than a ml? He struggles as doesn't like syringe going in.? Any suggestions?

Think he's having 1ml every hour. The vet gave him 5ml within an hour just after the teeth op I think. But we struggle to give more than a ml as so worried bout him choking as we lost a previous piggy to something similar

I give as much as they’ll take in one sitting, so around 25 - 30 mls per time. I generally aim for about 4 feeds of 30 ml = 120 ml.
How spaced out would you give that amount and how long does it take you if you don't mind me asking? They are giving 1ml very slowly as he takes ages to take it every hour. We aren't giving anywhere near enough we know:-( we are just so scared he will choke.

I give around 30 mls in about 10 to 15 minutes. I tend to give a feed first thing in morning, then another around lunchtime, another at teatime and one before I go to bed.
And no choking. ? Sorry just so scared after we lost last piggy to choking after teeth filed:-(

No, I use a 1 ml syringe, with the end cut off and the piggy can take 1 ml at a time.
Ok thanks. So cutting off the end of the 1 ml syringe works better? Through the side of the mouth? How long does it take for the piggy to take the full 1 ml? Hare takes ages to swallow it. He really struggles to take 1ml. He absolutely hates it. Takes about 15 mins to take the 1 ml! . He managed 23 MLS throughout the day today which was more than he took yesterday. His mouth seems more closed today a bit.. . I know it's not enough of critical care formula that he needs to be having but my sisters will be feeding throughout the night to continue the feeding to give him more.. He ate pear and spinach on his own today. Struggled a bit but did manage it eventually. He has the vets on Monday again. Thanks for the advice. We will be speaking to origin vets who are the speciality vets for Cardiff area.

Hi all. I don't want to do this but you were all very helpful throughout with Hare I wanted to update you. Our hearts are breaking. Today Hare passed away in the specialist vets arms that took over looking after him. He was doing well and starting to gain weight. Then lost a bit then gained more. The specialist vet suggested that the previous vet who did the op on teeth may have dislocated his jaw during the op but she wasn't sure and wanted to x-ray him when he gained a bit of weight. So we were constantly feeding critical care ( a new one suggested that he loved) and he was trying to eat bits of food by himself.
He had fun in the garden with his cage brother and ran to front of cage to grab syringe of food ! But late last night he had hiccups. First time ever. We were worried. Then he seemed very stressed so he was cuddled all evening with his brother. This morning he went down hill very quickly and we believe had a stroke. He was shutting down. My sisters took him straight to vets. They gave painkillers to ease pain he was in.. specialist vet came in.. tried her very best. His little body has been fighting for weeks. Today his body gave up the fight. The speciality vet did confirm that his jaw was indeed dislocated and how he ate anything was an absolute miracle. She said he was a little warrior to the very end and she was deeply upset too. We will miss him forever. Run free little hare. Our hearts are broken and we will always miss you gorgeous boy.
Can you all give your piggies a special kiss from all of us in memory of our boy Hare. Xx sleep tight little guy xx

I have just caught up with your thread and I am so very sorry that you have lost your sweet Hare :(

When you are feeling able, please put in a complaint about the vet who did the dental as what they did was very bad and s/he shouldn’t be doing dentals if they can’t hold a guinea pigs mouth properly!

I am so sorry and I shall be giving both my guinea pigs a kiss and hug them close for you.

Sleep tight Hare xx

Hi thanks xx we will be. The specialist vet was very apologetic. She did not do the operation herself but will be speaking to the vets.
He was loving the new critical care she suggested and called him her warrior and she fought to save him today for us. Yesterday was one of his best days so we were so surprised this morning.. In the end he just said today is the day and she held him whilst he passed away suddenly :-(
