so cleo seems to have become very fat... (not pregnant)
her stomach resembles a water balloon...
since being ill and getting her apetite back she seems to NEVER stop eating... and its started to show...!
and tips on how to keep the piggie fat off...?
she has lots of exercise opportunities but prefers to sit and veg...and i've cut down her pellets... but she just eats olivers.... so now i've had to take oliver for floor time alone so he can fill his face...

so... any tips would be most apriciated... :)
thanks...
x

also any ideas to get her more active aswell... :)
ive tryed to hide food around and stuff.... i filled a toilet tube with a couple pieces of lettuce and then rammed it full of hay so she had to work for it... and she let oliver chew it to death and then beat him up for it once he'd dont the hard work... haha... shes not stupid...
x

I have to regularly exercise Velvet......... when it's playtime i just make her run around a bit more...... i take her from the hidey and place her a good distance away so she has to run back (i can't do too far cause of her being blind, it has to be in her comfort zone)
mmmmmmm maybe she needs to do piggie aerobics ;):(|)

The best thing is usually to cut down or eliminate the pellets, as long as you make sure to feed at least one high vitamin C veg per day like pepper, broccoli or parsley and coriander.

The best way of exercising a greedy piggy is by making her work for her food by calling her over to you for a treat from different angles, sprinkling/hiding food all over the place where she has to stretch herself. What does NOT work is scaring her into running!

was hoping you'd get a laugh Clare :(|)

i could just imagine Cleo watching Oliver struggle to eat thru the hay and then saying.........right off you go........MY TREATS rolleyes

yeh oliver has a single track mind really... FOOD... so hes mlike must chew for food.... must chew for food.... and then cleos like... ahha yes my little slave piggie do the hard work.... then hes like yes...!.... i have treats... and shes like... on you bike mate....:(|):(|):(|)
hahah....
they do make me laugh...

Clare start up her piggie aerobics ...........

It's lovely tho that she's putting on some weight after what she's been thru :)

ive put her at the bottom of the ramp a few times and shes run straight back up..... so.... lets get the piggie weight watchers on the go... :)
wish me luck....!
can you buy low fat pellets...?
x

ooooooooh good idea Clare x)
Come on Cleo get some exercise then you'll have earned your nom nom's!
low fat pellets...........yeah cut them in half ;)

I'm about to contact burgess (mine eat the excel super duper nuggets as my pigs seem to think they are rolleyes) to see if they do a low calorie guinea pig pellet, as I know they do a low calorie rabbit pellet diet. I also have a hugely fat pig (aptly named Big Dave), a moderately fat pig (Little Dave), and then theres Boxy, who eats like a horse, but is one of them little sods with good genetics who doesn't gain any weight! Jeff is also getting a bit of a gut on him (it's dragging on the floor when he runs but he's still a sexy beast! drool) so I could really use some low calorie pellets!

I'll let you know how I get on! lol

Sorry bout your piggie being blind:(

I think you could feed her a bit less, not too much you dont want to starve her!:(:))

I've made some calls to various large companies - Burgess, Supreme Pet Foods and the like, and as yet no luck! I'm gonna email one of the guys on the food sales team at work and see if he can track down a low fat guinea pig nugget!

I think there'd be something in it for whichever company would be willing to step up and make a lower calorie/fat food for piggies.

I don't have any obese pigs, but they're all a bit porky! Granted I like to have them with a bit of junk in the trunk just to be safe, but if a few certain ladies of mine *cough*Munchie and Willow*cough* get bigger they're going to have to go to piggy weight watchers!

Yeah, you'd have thought so wouldnt you! I was surprised that burgess didnt do one to be honest, as they do one for rabbits. I'll speak to carl at work and see what he comes up with!

my pigs are fat but what i do is i put them out on some paving slabs together because part of my garden is paved and put a lot of pots about and they run around them that seems to get them shuffling (hehehehe see what i did there?) Also when you bath them what i do is i put a little bit more water in so they have to swim a bit, they get used to it but the first time they are a bit confused so you will have to put your hand under them just to help them along, hope this helps

Ha ha I have the same problem. My pig is fat too and all he does during floor time is lay there and NOT move. So frustrating.

Was just wondering how much your guinea pig weighed?

my largest is 1.3kg, I have another fatty at 1.16kg.

It's the body condition that is important rather than weight though, like someone could be 70kg and be considered a healthy weight, while someone else could be 70kg and very overweight and unhealthy.

My Pepper Pots is 1598g followed by Salt 1451g then Minty 1346g

My boys are all lardy big bums :))

i think its like people though... some of them can be that weight and not actually be over weight...
but cleo naturally sits around the 900 mark... so shes put on a bit... :))
ginger on the other hand it around 1450g and she doesnt look as fat as cleo.... haha...
poor little thing...

How's the piggie aerobics going Cleo ? ;) xx>>>

Clare i just had Velvet out again tonight doing some extra running around.........i do it a few times and then let her be.........then do it again she gets a bit peeved but it's for her own good......wish whee could let them understand that :{

I think I may join you with those piggie aerobics class because I know one little elephant-pig that could definitely do with losing a bit of flab! Poor Pumpkin, she's got the orange bit under control, now she's mastering the huge and round part :))
