What veg is best for piggies? What do your piggies like best? Do you think option 1 or 2 is best?
Option 1: Buy kale, use that up, then spring greens, ...

Option 2: Give them like a routine; handful of kale, slice peppers... Every day.
Someone on the forum did option 2 but I have forgotten who!
Many thanks,
Emily

I tend to give them routine. They get cucumber, celery, pepper daily.

They only get carrots, kale, broccoli ect either once or twice a week depending.

I feed coriander every other day.

How do you work out what/when/how much to give them. We found Kale and I cut up loads of carrot.

We gave them kale then carrot next day then back to kale. As I'm new to knowing what we can get them we just give them some. My little handful per piggie. Though carrot we give a couple of sliced pieces each.

I have 6 boys in pairs - in the morning each pair get - 4 slices carrot, 2 slices cucumber, 4 chunks celery, 2 lettuce leaves, and either 2 sprigs of broccoli OR 1 chunk apple OR 1 chunk of pearand i fill up their hay basket Mid morning they get treats depending on time of year veg/ clover/ grass and bedtime 4 chunks carrot , kale or cabbage
and hay

Carrot and kale are high in calcium and not best for piggies.

@piggyfan has a food plan for her gang, to prevent cystitis, sludge etc.

I give the pigs cucumber, green pepper, celery, rotating each day of dill, coriander, parsley. Twice a day, second feeding slightly less.

An occasional cherry tomato, as treat.

I chop up alsorts every day. I measure it out at night and chop them into little boxes ready for the next day (it is easier for me to drop them in the cage before work when it's already been chopped). To be honest, we don't have a routine of what we feed. We just buy a load of veg and they have a little bit of each every day.

I try to mix up the boys veg as they get a bit fussy. Daily veggies include cucumber, celery and green pepper (it's the only colour they eat). Their favourite is kale, but it's high in calcium and has been linked to bloat so it's a treat every few weeks. I give them fine green beans, broccoli and parsnip on rotation with their daily grub.
@piggyfan had a special diet which has been mentioned. I don't remember the exact name of it, but it's something I'll be looking into.

This is what I do. Mine get 3 servings a day of a complete variety. They always scoff the lot lol. Their fav was kale but after finding out its high in calcium this is going to be an occasional treat

Having recently lost a piggy to bladder stones, we had a routine here, my boys got a slither of pepper, a chunk of cucumber, a green bean and a few bits of celery, twice a day on top of a handful of nuggets between them a day and unlimited hays.

Both of my boys have always favoured baby corns and now Oscar has gone Stan is back on one a day of these. Poor Stan had to suffer all of Oscars diet malarky lol.

I think it depends how many piggies you have. My sister only has one and he gets a selected veg used up before the next one comes. For me, having 15, I bulk buy and they get a wide variety each day but only a little but of each.

My husband and i brought a bag of carrots, I found a bag of kale.

Thanks guys for your experiences.

A s you all know we have two. So how can we buy food for them and make it last and hope for nothing to get spoilt.

We have them out a lot more now. As at one point we had them out twice a week. We had them out 5 times this week as two odd days they were in bad moods.

I thought cucumber is two watery for them.

I will try my hardest to find this list of food and write it down.
Thanks everyone

My eight piggies get a variety of different veg and greens every day. They get a small quantity of everything cut into very small pieces. This is given once a day, almost first thing in the morning. Breakfast can consist of some of the following;
carrot, parsnip, spinach, broccoli, parsley, baby sweetcorn, cabbage, loose-leaf lettuce, red lettuce, cherry (1 quarter), blueberry (1 half), apple, cucumber, and red pepper.
As I said, only very small quantities cut up into small pieces. Not everything is always available. I n the summer, wild greens (dandelion, plantain, chickweed) might be added for variety and vitamins.

I saw you have lettuce and cucumber in your list. Some people have said not to feed them it. Is that why you have said little bits. I just want to get a understanding and make sure I'm giving the right stuff to my piggies.

Not everything on my list is given every day. They may get a couple of small pieces of cucumber instead of apple, and just one lettuce leaf or half. They never have more than one type of fruit. Looking at pics on this forum, a lot of people give their pigs big chunks of veg and greens. Each of my eight gets their own bowl of chopped up veg and greens. This allows me to make sure each of them gets exactly the same amount, see if anyone leaves anything, and watch to make sure they are eating with no problems.

I buy a bunch of different vegetables from the market or my local small supermarket about twice a week. And I try to mix up what they get and don't waste any at all. Plus some things me and my partner will share with the pigs too.

Their fave regulars are probably bell peppers (although they're not so keen on the green ones as they're not as sweet), although Martin also adores lettuce. They both really love kale, carrots (obviously in moderation) and pak choi, and pretty much any herb that they're allowed to eat (dill, coriander, parsley etc). They also love grapes but again that's only now and then as a treat.

Peppers are a firm favourite with mine too! They love having the odd strawberry as a treat too, drives them nuts!

I'm more of an option 2 person.
This is my boys diet:
- grass in the morning
- veggies at night
- pellets at night
- fresh hay and water all day.
A lot of people disagree with giving their pigs grass all year but as long as the grass is dry and has been dried out over night, I find it okay to feed and the boys love it!
The boys must get sick of veggies, hay and pellets everyday so I like to liven it up a bit. They only get a small bowl of it so it's not too much but I'm the wild they would eat grass so I think it's only fair to have it when they are with me. This is only my opinion but I understand why people hate feeding too much grass x

We have a diet thread that tells you what you can feed how often. If you wish, you can stick only to veg that is listed as safe to feed daily, which work out as a balanced low calcium diet. You make it more interesting by adding a small portion of another veg in rotation. it is easier for me to vary and rotate as I have two dozen piggies. ;)

DSC_2732.webp I have 13 piggies:) I chop up different veg morning and night to give them. So they have a variety. Their favourite is red or orange pepper,:) also apple ( which is moderated) And they adore spinach too, actually there aren't many veg or fruit they don't like hehe. THey know when I am awake and start wheeking like mad for breakfast, also their tea time veggies are at 5pm, if I am late, they soon let me know, it is really funny! Here are some of my girls with the largest kale I have ever seen! ( they didn't get to eat it all in one go!)

I give mine grass when I can from the garden too, they love it!

I think the diet is:
1 slice of cucumber
2 slices of celary
1 slice of green pepper
1 slice of spring greens
1 sprig of coriander
