I searched the forum and did not find the answer to this. So I'll ask here: does wetness in the vaginal area of a guinea pig signal being ready to mate, like going into heat or something? I checked out several guinea pigs today at the "local" pet shop (the one 20 miles away) and they were about 5 months old, 3 were sows, 1 was a boar. I tipped them up to identify their sex (one of them BIT me). The vaginal areas of the females were wet and glossy. There was no color to the gloss, just the shiny-ness of being wet. There was no irritation of the area. I was just wondering if that meant that maybe they were in heat or that they were already pregnant. I have seen other females that were dry; these were the first ones I had seen wet. And it didn't look like urine wetness.

I cant say any of my sows have ever had this so iw ould guess it is not normal, were the girls with the boy in the same pen?

differs with each sow, some show no signs at all, some have a discharge (sometimes milky, sometimes clear), some rumble around like a boar.

I would have thought though that if they were 5 months old, and in with a boar, they'll all be pregnant already, or will be soon if they aren't.

How long have you had them. They will all be pregnant! Take the boar out of the cage and seperate him. The girls will be pregnant. Keep a close eye on them. And seperate them later in pregnancy as they will all trigger labour in one another. You've got a lot on your hands.

Girls in heat are quite obvious. They will rumblestrutt (purr and rock on their back legs) at one another and they will sometimes mount each other. They usually become a bit tetchy every 16days when they come into season. But your sows i assume will be probably all pregnant by now.
