Hello,
apologies if this is the wrong subforum to post. I have 2 female guinea pigs that have been living peacefully together for almost 5 years now. About 3 months ago though, they had a fight resulting in a nasty mouth wound. No incidents since then until today with another minor bleeding wound inflicted. Additionally, the dominant female seems to keep chasing the other one around unless resting. I fear I will have to separate them, but can someone please advise on a couple of questions first?

1/ Is it normal for guinea pigs to stop getting along after such a long time living together?
2/ Do I have any options to diffuse the violence save separation? They are living in a 2x4 CC cage with no huts (I feel they needlessly decrease available space). Would adding stuff to the cage be likely to decrease the dominant female's agresiveness? What about increasing the cage size to 2x5 or 2x6?

Hi! Please have your girl checked for small, but growing ovarian cysts, which are likely causing the aggressive behaviour. These days, there are alternatives available to spaying, like hormonal treatments. Is your girl also showing crusty nipples?

Hi
Welcome to the forum . Sorry you are having issues. Do they have any hideys at all in the cage? Fiddlesticks may be a good idea as they have two exit's, it is unusual for a bonded pair to fall out after 5 years.

Am tagging in our behavior expert @Wiebke I would be tempted to separate them after the latest blood drawn especially as the aggression is continuing.

Could you add you location to your profile also please, it allows us to tailor any advice to your geographical location

EDIT: Sorry Wiebke posted same time as you... would you advise separation?

I would separate until you can have your aggressive girl seen and checked out. it will not break their bond.
