So I've been debating whether I should house my 2 boars on fleece since it seems so popular (they are currently on wood shavings). I just need some info about the 'cleaning' of the fleece, if that makes sense. I am thinking about layering 3 big carpet/doormat things then some fleece on top. Would I need extra fleece in the corners and how often would I have to change everything? Would it stink, become wet?
Thanks in advance!:)

Hi,

I'm not sure what you mean by carpet/doormat things. Most people tend to use towels, furniture moving blankets (uhaul) etc under their fleece, or some use puppy pads/incontinence pads.
With regards to how often it needs cleaned really depends on the size of your cage and how many piggies you have in it. For example I have a 2x9 c&c housing 3 pigs and I change that once a week. My other 2x9 houses 6 and that needs a full clean every 2-3 days.
If you put pee pads into corners/under hidys/ in front of hay racks....basically places they are more likely to pee, then this will help keep your fleece cleaner for longer. You just take these out daily (or whenever they start to feel damp) and put a new one in. A piece of fleece won't really work tho, you will need something absorbent under it.
If you try fleece and like it I would get liners made up (or make them yourself) they make changing the cage really quick and easy as everything is sewn together to the size of your cage.
I also found putting a hay box in helps keep the fleece cleaner for longer as my piggies tend to do a lot of their pee's in it. You can use a cat litter box or cut and sand a side out of one of the larger clear storage boxes if you want the hay more contained. I just put a good layer of newspaper at the bottom and then hay on top and clean out daily. The piggies love these :).
You also need to wash and dry your fleece a few times to get it to start wicking properly, and don't use fabric softener x

Can I just second Ziggies Piggies - I have two liners. Once a week I put their liner in the washing machine and they get the other one for the week. Very straightforward.

I would say if you have a 2x5 c&c with 2 pigs once a week should be fine. Yes just swap, although I always give the correx a wipe down with white vinegar and water solution. You would also be best using pee pads in high traffic areas like under hidies and in corners etc, and spot clean probably twice a day....I find a handheld Hoover great for that x

The pee pads swapped out one a week too? X

Pee pads get swapped out more often.

So for example, in my 2x4 C&C cage with 2 sows, I change the main cage liner once a week. Then I also have a separate pad on top of the main liner under each of the hidey houses. Each day when I feed them, I shake off the fleece under the hideys (they poo on the one and mess pellet crumbs on the other), then I turn them over so the clean side is on top. The next day I do the same, but since the underside is already messed on, instead of turning over I replace with a fresh one.
So pee pads, if they feel at all wet or damp, change them for a clean one. If they've just been poo'd on or had crumbs etc messed on them you can either just shake off or shake off and turn. Then change them every 2-3 days.

My hay box / litter tray - I have an very absorbent liner in, with some hay sprinkled on top. They do almost all their wees in there and most of their poos. I change that out daily.
