When I got my pigs last month my mum reminded me that cucumber from the fridge gave my childhood guinea pig, Sam, diarrhoea (that was over 25 yrs ago, so I can't remember).
Anyway, because of this I've been making sure that any veg/ salad stuff that's been in the fridge comes out the night before. There's no heating in my kitchen so it's quite cool but still the veg/ salad still ends up limp and a bit lifeless. This is just going to be worse when the weather warms up.
So, my question is, do you feed foods straight from the fridge or not?

Thanks in advance for any help.

i'd say take it out about half an hour before giving it to the pigs, or about 10 minutes in hot weather :)p:)p:)p:)p

Hi flips,

Not all guinea pigs will suffer diarrhoea when given food cold from the fridge, but there are those that do so it's always worth letting the food warm up slightly before feeding. Half an hour is plenty, just long enough for the strong chill to ease off.

Alternatively, wash the veg in warm water for a minute or two, this will warm it up a little quicker and you can feed it sooner.

ours get their veg straight from the fridge in whatever weather although sometimes I forget or OH forgets to put it back in the fridge afterwards and it does tend to go a bit limp

jules has only suffered from diarrhoea once and i think he had had too much veg that day - so needless to say he was on dry pellets and hay and water to allow his stomach to settle - maurice wasny too happy as we put him on a no veg diet also as we didn't have a separate cage to put them in - he certainly was grump piggy that day :))

Normally I take the vegetables out of the fridge, cut them up ready to give to the guinea-pigs, then eat my breakfast and give the guinea-pigs the vegetables then, I only did that because it saves time whilst I'm waiting for my toast :)) I didn't realize it could be bad to give them vegetables straight from the fridge, thank you for telling me

Mine comes out the fridge, into a bowl of cold water to be washed. I then chop it & put it into their jugs before i take it out to the shed to feed them; i've never had any problems with mine feeding it this way

I feed from the fridge and have never had problems because of that.

Veg can hit piggies digestive system, if they are not used to it (as are many young piggies from a shop or a breeder), or giving too much veg or damp grass.

Fridge Veggies

I've noticed that Pancake won't eat anything but her lettuce straight out of the fridge, the other veg she leaves alone for about half an hour...I wonder if it's because it's too cold for her?

Thanks for all the comments. Seems I'm being a bit overcautious. I'll try leaving food out for a short while to take the chill off and go from there. I think my pigs will appreciate crisper salad.

I always get Rogers veg out before I feed the dogs and spot clean his cage morning and night by the time I'm finished it's upto a nice temp and he's in there like flynn.

All my piggies are fine with veg straight from the fridge, I keep some carrots, celery, cucmber and some fruit in the fridge; the rest of the veggies are in wicker baskets in the cupboards so they last longer (cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cuaiflower etc).
If your piggie has sensitive teeth ,like humans can, it may be why it i leaving food for a while just make their veggies and leave them out for a little while till there a bit warmer.
Hope this helps!:)
