After much research and thinking about it I made the decision to get Fry and Louie neutered and get them a wife each.

I dropped them both off at 8.30am this morning. Whilst I'm nervous, I trust my vet so fingers crossed everything goes fine.

I'll be picking them up late this afternoon once the vet is 100% happy for them to leave.

My plan is to keep the boys on white towels for the first 3 - 5 days and then swap to towels and fleece, does that sound ok?

I've just stripped out there cages and hoovered them out so they are spotless. I'm airing the cages out at the moment. I've taken out anything they can climb on/over and have made sure they can reach their water bottles without stretching.

I've agreed with my vet that they'll get Metacam for the first 2-3 days post-op just in case they are in any pain and a precautionary dose of Septrin for the first week. Sounds ok, right?

Please send my boys good luck and healing vibes!

I'll update you all once they are back home and as they recover.

x

Sounds like you have everything covered :) I popped Alvin on white towels when I brought him home and it worked a treat, any slight discolouration was easy to spot (nothing at all really) and no sharp bits to rub on his wound.

Good luck to Fry and Louie, I'm sure they will be fine, and hugs to you - the waiting is the worse part!

Hope all goes well today x

Sounds like you have everything thought through!

Please keep a check on your boys throughout the first night. In rare cases, piggies can gnaw on their operation wound; although you have most of that angle covered by the metacam. Make sure that you have an emergency vet number.

Hopefully, all will go well!

Lots of vibes sent :laluot_29:
Know how worrying it is when we elect them for surgery, I felt overwhelmed with guilt when my boys were 'de-plummed' in case anything went wrong :(
You certainly seem prepared for post op care. I just removed everything from their pen except hidey's so they couldn't exert themselves and kept them on one level on mattress toppers and white bedding. Check wound sites twice a day if possible for any redness or inflammation as could indicate infection.
I popped a hay rack in too as my boys often lie in the basket I use so minimalised any risk of infection.
Sure they will be absolutely fine and happy to be home - my boys were charging around within 24 hours as if nothing had happened and loved the extra attention and cuddles :(|)
Keep us posted :)p

Thanks for all the vibes guys.

Louie seems quite bright. He's wandering around his cage and eating his hay and veggies. The wound looks neat and tidy.

I'm a bit more concerned about Fry. He doesn't seem that interested in food at the moment and is just lying in his cage not moving much. I'm going to give him until 7pm and if he's still not had much to eat I'm going to syringe feed him.

I'm a bit pee'd off at the receptionist at the vets this morning. She was supposed to inform me that my vet, Kevin has gone on paternity leave as his wife gave birth nearly a month early and therefore it would be a different vet operating. She didn't tell me this and I only found out after it had been done. Fortunately, it was one of the other decent guinea pig vets at the practice but I would have preferred it to be Kevin. When I mentioned it to the nurse and the other receptionist when I picked the boys up they were very apologetic and told me that the receptionist should have told me and given me the option to reschedule for when Kevin is back to work. Ho hum....

I hope the boys recover quickly, there's no harm in topping them up food wise. Remember to weigh them daily!

Bet the boys can't wait to get wives! x

Both of the boys are looking a bit better.

I gave them their meds and some critical care earlier. Fry was a bit of a battle, he really doesn't like syringes but managed to get some critical care in him and his meds. His wound was bleeding a little bit but I think that is because he was struggling so much against being syringe fed. I cleaned it up gently and it seems fine now.

Louie was much easier to syringe and took it well. His wound looks nice and clean and there was no blood or anything.

I've just given them a feast of veggies and Louie was quite enthusiastic about them and tucked in straight away. Fry was less enthusiastic but did have a munch eventually. I'll keep an eye on their veggie bowls over the next few hours to see how much they are eating, along with keeping an eye on poops!

I think because Fry is older it's going to be a slightly more difficult recovery for him but fingers crossed they are both heading in the right direction.

Weighed them both and they've lost a little bit today.

Fry weighs 1,034g (a loss of 29g)
Louie weighs 1,194g (a loss of 11g)

Wishing both of the boys a swift recovery. Thank you giving a detailed account of their progress, it really helps a lot of us with knowing what to expect - even if we've been through it before.

Thanks Suzy.

I'm going to try and do a detailed update regularly as I know that its helped me reading detailed updates from others.

WHEEEEEEEEEEKY HEALING LOVES FROM THE GIRLS AND I FOR FRY AND LOUIE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hope all goes well with both the boys, you're doing an excellent job! Yes i totally agree about having things detailed ( i have a daily record of the girls during their illnesses and it helps with knowing what's up and you can pick up on patterns!)

The girls send some special kisses to help the boys too xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Well the boys are gradually improving.

Got up at 4am after doing their final syringe feed of the day and going to bed at 12.30/1am.

I was a bit concerned about the small number of poos they'd done, especially Fry so took the decision to give them a dose of Emeprid. Normally I'd phone the vets and ask but it being 4am, I took the decision to just go ahead and give them it. It was that or risk one or both of them going into gut stasis.

So I gave them that and managed to get 20ml of critical care into each of them. The Emeprid worked really quickly for Louie and he turned into a pooping machine. It took a bit longer for Fry but he soon started pooping once he was back in his cage.

Got up and took my other half to work at 8am and then syringe fed the boys again and gave them their meds. When I did a poo check in each of their cages there was far more there and they both had some hay and some more of their veggies.

They both seemed much more active and bright this morning so I'm hoping we're over the worst of it (touch wood).

I'm going to continue topping them up with critical care, it won't do any harm.

Was considering going back to bed for a bit but there's no point now I've been up so long.

You def made the right decision with the metaclopromide. I find it a huge aid fpr post op piggies, it always seems to help the poops. I guess if I was mis after an op I'd want a wee stimulant to make me hungry and feel better about myself.
Sounds like they are well on the road to recovery. x

Few and funny poos in the first 24 hours after an operation are quite normal; it takes time for the body to work out the stuff that was used during the operation and also to make up for the gap while the piggy was out of it. A gut stimulant is not a bad thing to help speed things up.

It usually takes about 2-3 days for the body to settle after an operation, but your boys should improve noticeably with each passing day.

All the best!

The boys are doing well. They are munching their veggies and hay, pooping and peeing. Their wounds look nice and neat, no bleeding or discharge.

Their weight's tonight are:

Fry: 1,029g (- 5g)
Louie: 1,159g (- 35g)

I'm not too worried about Louie's weightloss as he's eating well, etc.

Louie got me a cracker this evening. I'd just finished giving him his meds and critical care, when he scooted his bum back off the edge of blanket and peed right on my lap, making it look like I'd peed myself. Had to go change my t-shirt, trousers and knickers. It was so funny I couldn't even be cross.

Yeah, here's hoping they realise that it's for their own good!

The boys are still doing well. Their wounds are looking fine and they are eating, pooping and peeing.

Their appetites aren't quite back to normal but they are getting there. I'm still topping them up with critical care

Their weights are:

Fry: 1,011g (-18g)
Louie: 1,141g (-18g)

Both have lost a little bit but I think that's because I was out today and didn't top them up with critical care as much today.

Well the boys are doing okish. They are still eating, drinking and pooping. Their wounds are healing well.

Fry has lost a bit of weight which I'm a bit concerned about. I can't see a reason for it as he appears to be eating normally.

Louie has a sore winky. It's looking quite red and there's a small scab on the outer edge. There was also a quite long sperm rod stuck which I carefully removed. I wasn't able to get the sheath to come back so I could check the actual penis properly but I didn't want to prodding about in that area too much. I'll try again tomorrow. I put a bit of sudocrem on his winky to help soothe it.

Weights as follows:

Fry:
09/09: 1,029g
10/09: 1,007g
11/09: 990g

Louie:
09/09: 1,172g
10/09: 1,175g
11/09: 1,164g
