So i went away for the weekend- leaving Fudge and Toffee in a nice clean cage, tons of hay, in the care of my parents and in perfectly good health. However, when i got back sunday night Fudge wasn't looking too clever and hadn't touched (tipped over and trashed) the fresh bowl of food that had been put in for them.. was worried at this point as also wasn't as enthusiastic about saying hi when i opened the cage to give them a stroke and check over (usually he's first to the door and practically climbing out). So gave them a couple of carrots.. again worried as they didn't have the usual tug of war over the same piece even though theres more than enough to pick from, gave Fudge a proper check over and found a couple of lumpy bits, one turned out to be slight impaction which i removed, after checking same area on cage mate, the other was just a normal insidey bit, no change- so decided a visit to the vets was in order. Unfortunately the job of actually taking him fell to my mum (who didn't believe anything was wrong initially) and when they got there the vet checked him over and couldn't find anything wrong said he seemed healthy and in good condition... didn't suggest anything. And now he's worse, not eating or even drinking! And very very reluctant to move(he's normally quite lazy, but this is a different ball game) kind of at a loss for what could actually be wrong with him at this point? Will obviously be trying to get in contact with a guinea pig/ exotic specialist vet in the morning or taking back to the general vets to see if thier attitude towards his predicament have changed(and doing whatever i can to get water and sustenence into him)
Very interested to hear if anyone has encountered anything like this and how it was dealt with

Welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear that Fudge is not well!

However, Fudge does need to be examined by a cavy-savvy veterinarian - Fudge's symptoms are common, and could be caused by a number of things!

Nevertheless, I am inclined to think that the cause could be gastrointestinal - Is Fudge continuing to produce normal droppings?!

So far as i can see he doesn't appear to have produced any droppings since last night, hasn't moved from where i left him. Quite reluctant to poke and prod too much as he seems to be in a bit of pain, but i did notice that his lumpy bit directly infront of his boy bits (something to do with urinary system?) Seemed to be swollen aswell this morning

Have you not syringe fed him? If they do not eat or drink for 24 hours, then I'm afraid his condition may be becoming critical. I would suggest try syringe feeding but most importantly you need to take him to a vet especially if he is swollen ASAP. Especially if he is in pain which I imagine he must be.

Trying to get in touch with the cambridge cavy trust now, is the only cavy-savvy vet i can find in the area. I know he needs to see a vet asap.. but all the general vets appear to useless unless the problem's staring them in the face- as he went yesterday already, and was told he's perfectly healthy when he clearly wasn't

Unfortunately that's the common thing with some vets, I've heard that trust is good. My fingers are firmly crossed x

The CCT isn't a vet so may not be able to help and she is not able to give prescription drugs which it sounds like he may need. Check our recommended vets locator as there may be one nearby. I believe there is one in St Neots.

There is a vet surgery there. He has severe gastric bloat (if the vet caught it yesterday he'd stand a better chance) so to be honest i doubt that prescription drugs would help that much. They're going to see what they can do, if that doesn't work thenhe'll have to go back to cromwells and see what they can do now we know what wrong- as i'm at work later my mum will have to pick up and sort out and doubt she'll go to st neots

I'm glad you've got a diagnosis. Bloat is serious, especially if it's not caught early. Your vet should have spotted this! Fingers crossed he'll pull through.

HUGS

I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed. It is upsetting for you that your first vet missed it, but glad that you have finally got a diagnosis and can tackle it.

Please give him plenty of gentle vibrations to help shift the gas and keep syringe feeding, very little and often. if things are dribbling out, only very small portions. He may be too weak to swallow. I am very sorry for your situation; it is very much a fight for his life now unfortunately. :(

At least you know what you are dealing with, I second the massage recommendation. Is he staying with Vedra?

Keeping everything crossed she can get him through it.

Keeping him in my thoughts.

Your poor little furball, afraid I have no advice. But sending masses of healing vibes &hoping for a speedy recovery. Good luck. Xx

I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed! he is getting the right treatment, and it is encouraging that the bloat is going down - it is usually not very quick.

Yep, sorry only just got on a break at work. He was looking more comfortable at early hours of this morning and has continued to progress- so seems his plucky spirit is paying off, or he thinks Toffee will be lost without him (when in fact he's stuffing his face and charging, popcorning and chirping about the pen like there's no tomorrow. Clearly enjoying the extra space for now)
