Where did the thread go? I had to log out and now I can't find it. It had some discussion on whether wires in sewing are harmful and I wanted to know why (dabbing in sewing as I am...)

Piggies can chew at things, some are the very devil when it comes to chewing, and they can get through the covering of material around a wire and thus make it poke out. Wires when they poke out and are supported by the rest of the item are then dangerous. So you have to use a bit of judgement as to how well the wire is covered and whether the piggie can get to the cut end.

I personally always use a plastic stiffener in the things I make. It doesn't hurt teeth if chewed upon and is a lot less likely to cause a nasty injury. It isn't totally safe of course, but it's better than wire I think.

Ok, thanks!

Is the wire more dangerous in sewing because the piggies can't see it and chew it out of accident? Because I mean hayracks are metal too, as well as water bottles and cage bars.

Thank you very much this is exactly what i was saying in that post, nobody wanted to listen to my worry's but obviously admin thought it was correct of me to point it out as they removed it.

Anywho is reply to the other, which was posted on that thread too. The hay racks/cages are moulded metal/wire, so they arnt able to stab themselves on it.

ok, so THAT'S why I can't find it! :) Thanks for telling me, I was wondering if I had imagined a thread...:{

I imagined the wire as some kind of welded hoop. I can understand how it could be dangerous if it was open ended. It would easily poke out of the fleece even if your piggies aren't chewers.

I'm experimenting right now with a thin foam strip, but it sticks to the machine and is hard to get pins through... Have tried batting too, I just wanted to know about options!

Hand sew the foam parts, have you checked to see if the foam is washable before making into items? My last post on that thread was pretty constructive, shame it didnt get posted. Basacly saying just because its widly sold doesnt mean it is suitable for piggys. (like pet shop treats and grass huts)

Hand sewing is booooring :)) But yes, the foam is washable. I'm gonna see if it'll work as a structure in tunnels. That way I can quilt it in place once it's inside the fleece.

Good point about the widely available! Oxbow grass nests have no wire, I hope they are ok? Mine love theirs...

Well they are moderators for a reason and the woman has said that the wire is well concealed and has rounded edges. The thread was removed so that the argument would be dropped, this clearly hasnt happened... maybe it would be prudent just to let it go, everything has been cleared up the moderators are fine with the product... everything is fine now
