Ok so some of you already know that I will be rehoming Peter shortly once the B&Q grids arrive to build a C&C cage with (correx is already here). Now Peter is going to be neutered to live with my girls which is fine as I will have their old cage for him to live in next to their cage in the meantime but I have read some stories on here and I am worried about the risks of neutering. Now I know that he has been tried with several boars unsuccessful so feel there is no option but to neuter but what can I do pre and post op in order to make sure he is as comfortable and recovers the best he can?

I plan to keep him on fleece and towels with hay only in a hay rack post op, daily cage cleaning and maybe buy some specific bedding material thats soft for him to sleep in. I also have an excellent vets who are accredited for working with small animals and the two vets I have seen have been extremely knowledgable and caring with my girls.

Is there anything specific I should be buying/using for him? Is it ok to swab with salty water everyday to help him heal or is there another product I should be using? Should I be doing regular washing to prevent dirt getting in?

Any helpful tips you can provide will be greatly appreciated as I feel so attached to him already (and I've not met him) and it pains me knowing what I am going to put him through but I think its his best option for living with friends permanently

i dont have any advice sorry but i would like to know the answers. nelson is going in for the op on friday as long as the pre op check goes ok on thursday.

its amazing how nervous we get isn't it.

I would probably get some vetbed for him to sleep on if you can. That said Boris lived on hay when he came to me about a fornight after his op. I didn't clean it at all, but did make sure that it looked nice and clean and was healing well every day of course :)

We can't help worrying about them, they're or babies! I was so nervous the day Boris went to the vet, like you I hadn't even met him then!

Hope Peter's (and Nelson''s) op goes well x x

Here are tips for post op care and what to be prepared for:

You may wish to discuss the possible use of zithromax with your vet. It is a very strong antibiotic, but magic when it comes to nasty abscesses and infections (even very bad URI) and can save lives where baytril doesn't work. In my case, next to Jo's round the clock nursing, my having it at home by a sheer fluke (I had got it for Llewelyn, but not used it) saved Hywel's life. Otherwise I am convinced he would not have survived the weekend. He didn't have an abscess, but has an infection very close to his guts, so it can't be operated on. Hywel's problems fall into the 2% of cosmic bad luck that even the best of vets can prevent.
If necessary, refer your vet to Simon Maddock for more information: http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/contact_us.htm

Best of luck for Peter!
