My precious girl is being spayed tomorrow due to a badly diseased/inflammed uterus and ovarian cysts, but cysts are under control (useless now!) she has dropped weight and declined in general in the past 2 days, and as the next date the specialist is available is 3 weeks away- we are going with my usual vet. I have confidence she will take care of her, but still have this nagging feeling that she wont come home to me. Shes 4 years old, and one of those situations i wish id done it sooner. Here she is tonight after a syringe feed- I'm glad shes forgiving.

Good luck angel x

Hope everything goes well for crunchie, sending love xx

Hope all goes well today. Sending love and vibes x

Thank you all for your well wishes. Crunchie was brought round from surgery at 1pm. By 2 pm she was nibbling on bits of veg. I collected her at 3 pm, she was wobbly but on the move. During the car ride home, we turned a corner and crunchie rolled onto her back and couldnt get up, and i saw a dark patch near her wound and panicked. We pulled over and i wrapped her in a blanket on my lap to keep her stable- it was just a nipple i saw thank god, i thought her wound opened!

We got home at 4.30 and she has been nibbling on some hay although taking quite a while to nibble it up. She has eaten about a small handfull of lettuce since, i've been handfeeding her little and often. Her appetites not great and she looks quite uncomfortable- she tries grooming her face but cant manage due to the pain in her abdomen id imagine, shes maxed out on metacalm for today via injection. She scoffed an oxbow vit c tab, probably the only thing shes ate at a normal pace. No pellets or water as yet, but veg was soaking wet. I havent weighed her as i dont want to stress her and as i said, shes too uncomfortable.

She wont lie down as yet, and sort of just hovers looking sore. She moves around in her hidey, but wont come out.

She passed around 15 poos between 1 and 3pm- but none since. But Shes due metacloprimide in half an hour. She has urinated.

I'm unsure wether to syringe cc or not due to the stress isue, but dont know how long its safe to wait without stools being passed.

Any help would be apprexiated.

Good news, glad everything went well. :-)

Healing vibes To little Crunchie.

Were just finished another syringe feed, only managed 2 ml but she is eating on her own better so i feel its giving her a little boost. Eating hay well and after our syringe feed just there, she ate a good handful of veg. She looks more comfortable however she started arching her back with head down, like she does when shes about to retrieve a poo from her rear.. But she count bend under due to her understandable discomfort.. So i became the messenger- collecting the poos at one end and passing them to the other where she ate all 10 of them lol.

Praying she continues on this path. Time to set my next alarm!

Amazing, she sounds like she's doing brilliantly. I'm so glad for both of you and credit to your vet. A spay can be a very difficult procedure.

Keep it up Crunchie. :-)

Crunchie didnt eat through the night, (2am-7am) although still passed poos. At 7am i only managed to get 2ml of cc into her as she wasnt tolerating it at all. Uninterested in fresh vegetables. I gave her loxicom and put her back. Back out at 10 after seeing her eat hay, she took 7ml of cc happily then got annoyed. Put her on a folded vet bed with hay and veg whilst i cleaned her cage and she ate some of both. She seems bright, still abit "hoppy" when walks, and seems to try and run from a to b instead of just stepping . She still wont leave her hidey unless i take it out, isnt drinking on her own either (not usual a big drinker anyway).

How much loxicom to yous use? I have cat loxicom and yesterday was told 2kg mark on syringe per day.. Another vet told me 3 last week and another vet says i can give up to 6! Anyone know? I dont want to give her too much bit need to keep ontop of this pain. I'm splitting the dose q12hr x

i was going to suggest watching for a drop the day after the op. mollie is on metacam anyway and has been for months now, and on the day of her spay she had her usual dose of dog metacam in the morning (0.5ml) then the injected one after the op and then her 0.5ml again that night. the next day she went back to 0.5ml 2x a day and it wasn't enough. so the vet increased it further and split it across 3x a day until she was as well as she was initially after the op (she initially was brilliant that first 24hours before the injected dose wore off). so alot more metacam is needed than is often given, and the higher amounts are safe for a short time (the 3x a day high doses) and the adequate doses are safe to use longer term aswell.

so in my opinion, and compared to what we were given, the metacam dose is very low and after an op like a spay, i'd give alot higher. it really does depend on the pet themselves. for example, mollie also has bladder issues aswell and then had a spay so she may have needed more than others.

our vets don't have a standard set 'maximum dose allowed' but rather have a maximum dose allowed depending on what condition they have or what op they have had which makes alot more sense.

i know metacam is one of those things that people debate over and over so i don't want to get into that, but just give you my experience with it and what our (very experienced specialist) vet has told me and the way he has treated mollie :)

also think you're right to top up straight away with small amounts of feed :) x

eta: just realised you have the metacam syringe so i don't know how that compares as we don't use that, but cat metacam is alot weaker so i'd think it was still very low. :)

forgot to say - if she's hopping a bit aswell then it sounds like there is inflammation which needs bringing down and the 'higher' doses are needed to properly get on top of things like that x

Good advice @biscandmatt, she had her little girl spayed not long ago.

I know Metacam is fairly well tolerated and does seem to have quite a varied dose.

Good she's moving even if it is just when you remove the hide's. I do find piggies after GA are fine at first and then sometimes they do go downhill again before perking up. Keep up with your routine, the most important thing is keeping the pain down and the food going in. X

I would speak to the vet regarding doses needed to control pain as she may be in pain and need a higher dose of pain killer. Metacam is well tolerated at higher doses for short periods of times as said above. Spaying is a huge operation..

Can't help with cat doses as only ever use dogs. @helen105281 @Abi_nurse any ideas on dose range on cats metacam for Adelle to speak to her vet about?

Also your vet can add in Tramodol., my girl had that after her spay as well as Metacam (Dog one) & it really made a difference :)

Thank you for that. Went to my vets just to collect more critical care (£20 for a pouch! :yikes:) and the vet came out to me for a chat. I told her that the loxicom dose just wasnt enough and that i wanted to increase it if she was happy with that- she didnt really say much as shes a bit hesitant with higher loxicom doses in gps. Shes now on 1.5kg (mark on syringe) cat version every 8 hours. I've also started her on zantac to prevent any gut irritation with the higher dose.. And well, the video speaks for itself!

glad you have increased metacam now. i don't know how the metacam syringes relate to doses in mls but i'm sure you'll notice if it's enough or she needs another adjustment along the way. glad she is doing well :)
