My pigs (two pregnant girls and one (neutered!) male) go out on the grass every morning and come in at dusk and we also pick them a big pile of long grass and give to them every day. They also have unlimited horse hay (its long strands so I think timothy), I also give them mixed veg every day (spinach, kale, cucumber, pepper, cabbage most days and other bits like courgette, carrot etc occasionally) - i dont measure the amount just throw in a few handfuls. They also have vit c tablet daily

My question - if they have lots of grass do they still need all of this veg? Does the grass count as vegetable or hay?

I'm worried that the male is fat, Ive looked at the size chart but cant tell and obviously its difficult to tell with the girls being so pregnant. Do I drastically reduce vegetable quantities just in case? Do others separate pregnant and non pregnant pigs for feeding?

The difference between grass, hay and vegeies has been annoying me for ages, I just cant work out how they compare and whether grass contains all that they need.

If your worried on a fat pig weigh him and keep regular records as you would for your pregnant ladies. Some breeds of pigs carry more weight than others and clearly males are heavier too. A male can be anything from 1800g to 2300g in my view and experience.

Pull back on high calcium veg including kale and spinach. If they are eating grass and are used to having it all the time - fine otherwise be cautious as to not encourage gas build up. Continue with hay but I would only feed high value vitamin C veg and personally once a day.

Hope that helps

Ok great thank you, so I'll just give a couple of slices of pepper once a day instead of all the other veg. He's only 1100 so maybe ok after all, but he looks a bit chunky. Yes they've always been out all day on grass since I got them so I think they're used to it.

The girls were pregnant when I got them.

Ah, I look forward to seeing the babies!
