Hello All...

I am hoping that someone can give me some help.

I have 3 lovely lady guinea pigs who are all sisters and aged 2 1/2. I rescued them a few months ago.
All settled very well and are happy in their home,

HOWEVER...

I very recently noticed that one of them is bleeding from her lady parts, this DOES NOT occur when she wees it is the tiniest bit of spotting.

I took her to the vets who said she was a very happy and healthy young guinea pig and that there was no reason as to why she was bleeding.
The vet did say that because she had bred young before (not by me) this could be a reasoning as to why and she is probably in 'heat', however after having guinea pigs for many years before this never occured, but they were never bred.

She is eating, drinking, playing and running around in their run eating the grass as per usual.
She does not seem to be showing any pain and is still very happy when receiving a cuddle from me.

I have kept a close eye on her over the past 3 days and it has been noticed 3 times, only very slightly.

Can anyone please tell me if they have experienced this symptom or get me any closer to helping my lovely little Bon Bon.

Thank you very much for taking the time out to read this!

Please help!

i have never experienced this myself but i know some people say there guinea pig can spot when in season...
are you 100% sure its not in her wee... i have had guineas that have had blood in there urine and it looked like pure blood...
one way to do it... would keep a record of dates when she spots if it is every 4 weeks then it is more then likely hormone related...
is there any squeeking when passing wee...?
if she is eating, weeing, pooing, drinking and guinea pigging like normal then i probably wouldnt be too concerned that with the health check by the vets saying that all is well....

i wonder... and this is only speculation wether this can have any connection to an infection in her womb or abnormal growths... but again I'm assuming your vet would have taken her temperature and felt her tummy and i would have thought both of them would have been picked up if he had...

sorry I'm not much help... :))
but i would probably just keep a record of dates and see if it is when she is in season that she spots...

good luck...
x

Guinea Pig's come into season once every 17 days - humans are 28 days. It is important when commenting on the medical board's the information is accurate as possible. As people frequently do searches to find information.

I would suggest a dip stick test and then perhaps a urine analysis to rule out UTI, if it hasn't been done already.

I have no experience of sow's spotting so can't help there - is your vet Guinea Pig Savy. Perhaps we can help you locate a vet with more experience.

Has your vet ruled out a UTI/Cystitis. If shes spotting when she is weeing then this is the most likely thing for it to be? Has she been put on any antibiotics? It sounds much more like a UTI, i didnt think that piggies should bleed when they are in season. Ive only had bleeding from the vulva from a sow but this was only after a c section. I would see another vet for a second opinion if they havent done anything with/for her. She could have a pyometra (infection in uterus) but she would be more likely to be very ill if she had this and the discharge would be smelly, more like pus and almost constast rather than when she wee's.

i would like to thank you for your help and advice. i kept a log of when this happened and the timing does seem to be just over every four weeks, I took her back to the vets who again said that noting could be found for her.

I have also seeked advice from another vet because I got worried that the vet i used may not have been guinea friendly.

I checked on her as she has a wee and she seems fine.

I have a very cuddley happy guinea pig. Thankyou for your help and I am sorry I havent got back to you before now.
