My guinea pig has been making these congested almost hooting noise for a few weeks, although these sounds aren’t consistent, she’ll be quiet for like 5 days before making the same noise and only after she chokes does she stop making the noise. I have a link at the bottom for a video. She’s eating and drinking fine, not any less active than she usually is. I took her to the vet, they checked her teeth and listened to her lungs but couldn’t find anything! Please help!

Hi and welcome

Is she making these sounds after eating or after being in the hay?

She’s always eating hay so it’s hard to tell if it’s right after eating but yes I’ve caught her in camera making these noises after eating hay. Could it be that she isn’t able to properly chew the hay I’m giving her? Maybe getting her a softer brand? Because the vet checked her teeth and nothing was wrong.

Hi!

Hooting is in many cases caused by a slight obstruction in the nose - like a bit of hay dust. Guinea pigs are not much in the way of mouth breathers and have very narrow airways, so even the slightest bit that is blocking the airflow becomes very audible.

I would try and see whether a different hay brand may solve the problem. it can be just greedy eating and her not chewing her hay as well as she should. Softer hay may go down better. All you can do is try what works and what not by trial and error once any medical issues have been exlcluded.
