One of our guinea pigs died last week, leaving our 4 year old boar by himself. They had been together as brothers for the 4 years. I'm worried because he's only 4 that he might have quite a few more years by himself.

It's been a consideration to get him a friend, but I don't really want to commit to another baby or get him neutered. I know this really only leaves getting an older boar but obviously this isn't usually advisable. He was the submissive piggy of the two, I don't know if this has any influence.

I just wanted to get some general advice on whether he would be okay by himself but if not how feasible it would be to go about getting an older boar?

Thanks!

So sorry for your loss. 😢

Age doesn't seem to matter to piggies as much as mutual liking. If you have a look at the reccomend rescues list you will be in safe hands in finding a friend.

I think I'm going to try some rescue centres and see if I can get some bonding sessions. Do you know if there's a case where a bereaved guinea prefers being by themselves?

I daresay they can survive by themselves but it in my experience they're happier with companionship

I agree that the age doesn't matter - At the beginning of last year my 6 year old Boar lost his brother, who he'd spent his entire life with. I introduced a 6 week old baby boy and they went together very easily, They spent almost a year together before the older boy passed away and I actually think it gave him a new lease of life - it certainly encouraged him to eat veggies that he (and his brother) had always refused before.

It's really nice to hear that it made such a big difference! I'm struggling to find many piggy rescues around Leeds but I'm going to keep having a look.

I am so sorry you have lost your boar.
Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

It's worth ringing round some rescues as they don't always have all their piggies on their websites. Also it's worth trying your local RSPCA, although they neuter their boars for rehoming with sows they sometimes have older piggies that are not suitable for the operation. Your remaining boar would be lot happier with a friend.

That’s a great idea!
So sorry you lost your other little man

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Your best bet is to try one of the rescues on our rescue locator Recommended Guinea Pig Rescues and see if they have any boars for boar dating. It can take while to find a good match. And sometimes you have to travel some distance to find the right companion.

I’m so very sorry for the loss of your guinea pig, please feel free to leave a memorial for them in our rainbow bridge section
