Guinea Pig Penis Problems Please Help! (pictures)

Top Tip : pure coconut oil can be found in the beauty isle, cooking isle & world foods isle of your supermarket. It is most expensive in the beauty isle, then the cooking area - but way cheaper in the world foods isle. I bought a jar of KTC 500ml for about £3 from Sainsburys world foods isle a few weeks ago.

This is a great tip! I got mine from Holland and Barrett so no wonder it was expensive. After using it on him I may start using it on myself! It is so softening! Thanks for sharing

off topic I know, but the world food isle is also cheaper for things like tins of coconut milk & tomatoes, bags of rice & pasta & dried herbs & spices. No idea why, but I make sure to check it first before I go to other areas :) is the same in all the big supermarkets.

EDIT : grrr just noticed I've been spelling it wrong.. I mean aisle not isle! As a self confessed grammar nazi I must now sit in a corner & think about what I've done. I can only apologise for my stupidity.

Thank you, his name is Kojack (that's the name he had when we rescued him).

He is my absolute baby and my husband says I mollycoddle him too much! :wub:After they have their dinner he knows it's time for bed and I put down a blanket and he climbs in the I tuck him in and he makes a little cocoon :luv: I just love to mother him! Breaking my heart that he is so poorly at the minute

What a great Mum x

That is so sweet.

Well had to say it, sometimes we need a pat on the back and I know what
It’s like to not get one and I know how horrid it is when guineas aren’t feeling ok and the emotions involved x

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to give u all a willy and foot update!

I think the willy looks less scabby for sure, I am using coconut oil on it to soften it as I do believe his Epsom salt foot soaks are drying it out where it is dangling out.

It's still a questionable size... I'm not sure how swollen it is and what is 'normal'.

Still eating, drinking and peeing/pooping fine. His poops are smaller than normal but I think that could be the baytril.

His bumble foot is really really proving stubban to heal! I've taken many tips from here though!

Tonight we did a Epsom foot soak, then I used leucillin spray to kill any germs, followed by goregous guineas F&M ointment. Then I've done something I've never done before and I used some small bandages, and some medical tape, you know the papery kind that peels off skin really easy? We put the cream on and have wrapes up his back feet because the thing I find with the ointment is that you put it on and then they walk on the fleece so surely it just comes straight back off? So I'm keeping his feet wrapped for an hour or so and then I will unwrap them... I thought that might give it time to properly absorb?

I don't know if this is the right thing to do.. has anybody ever done bandages for bumble foot before?

It's such a catch 22 because he's not moving much because his feet are sore but by not moving I think it's getting worse.

He's also lost some weight, although he has never been a big pig. He has never been like other skinnies I've seen where they are sort of plump.. he has always been very saggy (but he drinks a lot of water so I don't think it's ever been caused by dehydration). I've been giving him critical care but not too much as he is still eating his normal amount or hay, nuggets and veggies. Also my heating is on full blast I am literally roasting

Back to the vets tomorrow!

Ahhh Kojack you’re gorgeous  I’m so glad to see your face (as well as your willy) . Your mummy is taking such great care of you, you lucky boy to have so much love & care given. I think your boy bits look bit better (but I’m no expert I’m afraid as I have 3 girls & my late boar never had a problem there) coconut oil seems to be helping.
I think having your feet wrapped for hour or so would help cream abdorb. The same logic is like us wearing cotton gloves/ socks after applying moisturiser.
Keep up the good work, keep strong & be good Kojack and let us know how you doing.
Love & healing vibes xx

:hug:For you Mum of Kojak, gorgeous boy.

Bless him, poor little chap. Massive hugs to you, you’re doing fab job of slave to Kojack :luv: x

Hi everyone,

Here is an update!

I saw a different vet yesterday who was really good.

Willy update:
So the vet had a really good feel and prod of Kojacks willy and he managed to get it to pop back in! I was in shock because no matter what I have done it has always hung out and I thought we would never get it in again!
He showed me how he did it and it involved pulling the skin outwards (rather than trying to poke the willy inwards) by pulling the skin back out away from the body the willy sort of slides itself back up into the body. He taught me how to do it.
When we got back from the vets it poked back out when he did a wee, but I put it away again and it stayed back for most of the day. This morning it popped out a bit but only by a tiny bit. This is a huge improvement from it being out constantly and dragging around the floor, which I think is what is making it dry and crusty!

He said the willy doesn't feel particularly normal and he thinks that Kojack may have damaged it in some way. He said that although we could look at potential surgery, that Kojack is abit too old for us to want to go down that route at present because it is not bothering him. He said he is really confident that it is not hurting him (Kojack shows no discomfort even when giving it a pull and poke) so we are going to continue keeping it clean, keeping it moisturised and getting it smooth, and popping it back in so it's in his body as much as possible, then see what the progress is. I hope that by it being back in his body it starts to heal itself. He is still on baytril and metacam.

Foot update: his feet are still bad but I AM NOT GIVING UP! My routine is presently: foot soak, then spray with leucillin, then gorgeous guineas ointment with a bandage for one hour while it absorbs. The vets have given me some hibiscrub for the first time so I am going to swap the Epsom soaks to hibiscrub for a week to see what progress that makes.

I have never used hibiscrub before and wondered if anybody has any tips? I have been told it's one part to twenty parts water. Does anybody know:
- if I need to be as cautious with his eyes (like how I have to avoid him putting a wet paw near his face when he has his Epsom salts)
- if it's okay to do a four foot soak (as it would be touching his bottom and willy)
- any other tips?

thanks all!
You've all been so supportive x

@Jaycey any tips on using the hibiscrub?

I remember having it once and I think it was for Miss Bumbles filthy butt but it was a long time so I can't be sure

I’m so glad Kojacks willy has improved that’s great news. My late Pedro needed hibiscrub for his feet when I first rescued him. (He was a neglected piggy before I got him) I diluted it then poured a small amount into a clean margarine tub. Pedro stood in the margarine tub beautifully, never moaned or moved. The mixture didn’t touch any of his boy bits as it wasn’t that deep, but I did dry his tummy off afterwards. I’m sure he enjoyed this as it gave relief to his very sore scabby feet at the time. Hope this helps x

I’ve used Hibiscrub for cleaning out an abscess.
Vet said dilute it to pale pink.
I’m sure piggy washed her wound afterwards without harm.
I now keep a bottle on hand.

There are different types of Hibiscrub so it's best to dilute it as the vet directs but like @Merab's Slave mentions it should be a very pale pink colour.

When I used it I made a little bath for my pig to stand in out of a shallow dish. He soaked his feet whilst I kept him entertained with food. I'd them stand him on a towel for a little while so his feet dried before popping him back in his cage.

It's best to keep it out of their eyes as try not to let him wash himself when his fees are wet or he's in the water.

As long as the hibiscrub is dilute it's quite safe.
Bumble foot can be chronic and can flare up and settle down for no obvious reason. I don't find antibiotics to be particularly helpful but hibiscrub and gorgeous guineas (l use perfect paws) usually does keep it under control together with metacam once or twice a day depending on the level of inflammation.

Hi everybody,
Kojack update. I'm really worried about him!

His willy is being good and staying in his body! Which I'm relieved about.

But his bumble foot is so so bad and he starting to stop eating and today he did a really strange poo! Does anybody know why he has done a poo like this?

For the bumble foot I'm doing hibiscrub (i was doing Epsom salt but have now changed) gorgeous guineas and luicillin spray. I'm so scared that it is starting to get beyond control

I'm sat here just watching him eat but he is eating so slowly and sadly :( he is on metacam but I'm scared it's not working

Looks like a bit of cleared impaction and a blade of grass. Has he done anymore since that look more normal? If this was a 1 off I would not be too worried and no doubt that strand of undigested grass/hay interfered with standard poop production.

Thanks, He has never done any like this before and there was no other weird ones. His poops are smaller than what they usually are tho and sometimes a bit clumpy :(

It looks like a tummy upset with a bit of dehydration. Please take him off fresh veg and start top up syringe feed. Also offer as much water as he will take. Hopefully things will start to normalise again within 24 hours. If not or if they get worse/the weight loss gets worse, please see a vet. The more fibre you get into him, the better.

Thanks @Wiebke for your knowledge and help.

Hey!

I'm having the same issue with one of my skinny pig (pododermitis combined with a chronically protruding penis). My boy is missing the scabbing seen on yours, but his has turned a dark purple color. I've been cleaning his penis in warm water at least twice a day, and using a lubricant to push (part) of it back up. His penis definitely isn't dirty (the vet pulled it all back, and confirmed he's clean), he isn't impacted, and his perineal sac is cleaned regularly. He's also living on fleece/towels. This is a relatively new development (i.e. in the last month or so), which started after he completed a course of Baytril and developed related-gastrointestinal issues. It goes back in sometimes, but unfortunately its been hanging completely out for the last 5 days. It doesn't SEEM to hurt him -- he lets me pull it back and clean it, and doesn't make a fuss when I gently try to push it back up.

The exotic vet I took him to isn't sure what's wrong with him, and she refused to do a uro-genital exam :/ I was going to post my own thread, but figured I'd add to this one.

Anyone else had any issues with this, especially in skinny pigs?
