Hay Box delivery charge

When I went through the steps to see if a subscription made any difference there was a marker at the top of the page that said I was still 5p short...so the full price version was £24.95 and the sub version was £23.90 but they use the full price to determine delivery fees.

So at first glance even with having a subscription...unless the normal full price of your order would go over the threshold...you'd still have to pay delivery.

I've not had a sub before though so not sure if they do have different rules for longer term customers.

I've had this back from them...I didn't ask about subscriptions though as I don't have one at the moment...

Thanks so much for getting in touch with us and providing your feedback. It's incredibly important to us whether its good or bad!

As you are aware, some prices have increased but also some prices have been lowered. We've tried to strike a balance to provide cost savings across the board. Our average order value per customer is over £25 so most customers will have benefitted from this. We've also found that the majority of customers like to add extra bits and pieces or bedding to their orders which allows them to easily access the free delivery.

We do have some exciting news in the coming months to reduce the size of our boxes which sounds like you would benefit from this!

We really do hope you are able to see the value we can provide you with and hope to continue to serve you and your piggies!

They did also include some comments on my own personal orders and what they thought I should do now which I've taken out as they won't be relevant to others. Basically they said buy smaller boxes as they're now a bit cheaper (but that means I have to order more frequently) or add extras like toys/forage which I don't need.

I don't think they changed the price of the meadow hay boxes. My subscription is for 2 2.5kg boxes and the cost is still the same.

I don't like the idea of reducing the size of the boxes to be honest. Unless they are reducing it but would still have the same weight and price. Although I can't see how that would be the case.

I’m hoping that they are planning on compressing the hay like you get when you buy it in a shop that will save a lot of room!

Hmmm, thanks for the heads up, I don't so much mind changing prices, but I really mind them doing it without letting subscribers know that things have changed.
Will have to have a rethink, I'm already struggling with the amount of stuff that gets delivered and just dumped on the doorstep instead of being able to get it put indoors. Yesterday the rats got more of my Tesco delivery than I did!
I was annoyed and impressed in equal measures! they are not so fussy as the guinea pigs, perhaps I should bring the rats in and make them into pets and let the guinea pigs run round outside it would be cheaper!

I wrote back to say their suggestions just don't really work for me. I basically just want their hay and I don't want to feel like I've been charged more for it...or have a house full of boxes.

They tried to say a 2 x 2.5kg 50/50 order worked out at £19.90 delivered and would be good space wise if I'm struggling. But I paid £27 for 2 x 5kg last time. To get the same amount of hay...which I need...I'd end up paying nearly £40 their way! That's a massive increase.

I also pointed out that they haven't communicated with customers either!

I know they're catering for the majority like any business has too, it's just a shame for us regulars who buy less each time.

The way they behaved during their problems with deliveries before and now their sneaky way of changing the prices of the hay I have on subscription so that it comes 5p below the free shipping charge is no way to run a business. Their communication is non existent, people who have subscriptions with them should have been notified before any changes were made. I bought hay elsewhere when the deliveries were delayed last time. Lovely hay, not so much wastage as it doesn't contain so many thick stems, I was going to give Hay Box one more chance but I am now cancelling my subscription.

@piggieminder do you mind sharing where you got your hay from if it's available to order online rather than being a local option?

@piggieminder Where did you get the hay from?

Our boys hate the stalky bits but our loving the Timothy blend at the moment from hay box so I am worried to change as I may end up with a box of stalks 😂

I don't think it's a good move. Especially since they're trying to say more people will benefit. No they won't, because delivery used to be free from £19, you won't make it better by increasing it to £25
I won't be buying more because it's risky for in case quality is poor and you now have boxes of stuff pigs don't want and annoying to store.

Yeah, @piggieminder ,share your secret because this last blend box is just sharp hard stems, hardly any leaves. Luckily, have mixture of meadow hay from country store, haybox Timothy, green oats and nature's own 5aday Timothy :mal: so everyone has their favourite pick...

Timothyhay.co.uk - Supplying the UK with Quailty Timothy hay

I bought the 8.5 kilo box. It's packed much tighter than the Hay Box boxes so the whole lot came in a smaller box than one 5kg from Hay Box. It's lasted a lot longer as I'm not topping the hay piles up so much as they eat it all. Of course hay quality changes all the time so the next batch may be a different story.

I buy from them all the time. They have just changed their bags to boxes and are abit smaller 8.5kg instead of 9kg but still free delivery and if you order on Friday by 2pm they deliver on Saturday.

Sounds like my boys would like this. So the 8,5kg comes in 5kg haybox type box? I'll try the soft Timothy or Orchard 🤔

@Hath the box was slightly smaller than the 5kg, the hay is packed in very tight, you can see where it's been cut from a bale like the Natures Own Meadow Hay is. I got the stalky Timothy which my boars loved it wasn't the really thick straw like stems like Hay Box has been recently, it was like HB used to be. I get Natures Own Meadow regularly for my boars, it's a really good price and brilliant service. It comes in 4.5kg bags (bio degradable). The new degradable bags are a slight worry as I store them under the bed, I have visions of a degrading bag could get messy. :)):))

I've found a local recommendation for some hay so might go and check that out today. The other links above look good too so might well be voting with my feet on this one!

Great, thanks. I can fit that in as it seems this batch of blend haybox has hardly any leaves and would prefer if I didn't have to store 4 types to feed everyone!
So their Timothy is softer than haybox. What about Orchard? Never fed that.

Wish I could find some locally. We used to get our hay from just4pets, they sold it in big bags and my guineas loved it, sadly the shop closed.

I've never fed Orchard @Hath I have heard it's good though. There's a guide here to different types of hay
A Comprehensive Hay Guide for Guinea Pigs (incl. providers in several countries)

Not sure it's actually softer it's not soft like the soft timothy, just not as thick stems. If your guineas prefer soft hay I would go with their soft timothy I think. Let us know how you get on. It's really hard to recommend hay because by it's nature and growing conditions it changes all the time.

I’ve just checked my subscription. I pay £18.95 for 5kg of Timothy every 6 weeks, and get free postage. Next delivery is due in March, and it still says postage will be free. I wonder if they’ve just changed the non-subscription delivery charges?

They changed with the subscriptions as well. I had to edit mine earlier because I saw that it will be charging me shipping fee on the next order. I changed mine to three 2.5kg boxes of meadow hay every 5 weeks because of it. If you try to edit your next subscription it will say "New shipping rates may apply."

Healthy Herby looks good. Smaller boxes and a selection of different hay and combinations. And they're back to a £19 delivery cut off.
Like that they're supporting rescues too.
Might give them a go!

That's just what I was thinking! I might stick with haybox Timothy's hay as well mine love that but I'm very tempted by the hay blends! Particularly the orchard grass with the dandelions mix! Mine have never had orchard grass before is it particularly nice? I'm getting very tempted to sample hay myself 😜. Supposed to be attempting to save money this month due to some expensive vet bills 🤣 but this website looks too good!😍 Thanks for the recommendation!Screenshot_20210220-084448.webp
I think I need some of this hay!

Really like the sound of healthy herby and the way they donate to rescues, and they do a second cut which is perfect for fussy P&P! I’m gonna cancel out haybox and give them ago!

I’ve just changed from Haybox to Healthy Herby i think they are a newish company they have a good selection and the girls are loving the hay. On a plus for every box they sell they donate hay to rescues.
Ooh, this sounds good. Am I understanding the boxes correctly? It says they ship in 2.5kg boxes, so if you ordered 5kg you’d get two separate boxes? That would be way better for me. At the moment I’m decanting a 5kg HayBox into two smaller boxes for storage, because the 5kg was a fair bit cheaper!

Yeah, that's how it works. I'm finding it a bit of a rip off recently if I purchase smaller amounts so I have just purchased 10kg orchard grass and dandelion mix which will come in 4 smaller boxes! Seems much cheaper than buying the 5 kg will just have to store in garage. Saving my pennies atm 🤣
