lola has a hay poke, eye is a bit red and she has her head tilty slightly. Help
aww bless her it does sound like it could be a hay poke if its come on suddenly as helen said, eyes are fragile things & if you feel it looks bad enough to take to the vets tonight then take her, but try ringing the vet first & see if its ok to bathe her eye with boiled then cooled/tepid water, if you have a egg cup full size quantity & dissolve a pinch of salt in it. gently flush over the eye with a clean syringe (if you have one) or put some clean kitchen roll (non fluffy) in the water & gently drip the salty solution in her eye. if its any debris in it hopefully it will flush it out, if she'll let you just see if you can see any grass seed in her eye from the hay,
i have had one of my girls with one of the fine dangly seed heads got under the eyelid & was rubbing the eyeball. if you can remove any foreign body without doing any further damage to the eye then try it, but if you're not confident to do that then vets visit it is i'm afraid
my vet told me to bathe the eye as above & get her checked out in the morning, although i noticed mine on a friday night so took her for the drop in surgery on the saturday morning.
i would phone the vet for advice & get her checked as early as you can.. a general vet will be able to treat her, i wouldnt worry if they're not an exotics vet on this occasion & it'll probably be cheaper too
The vet gave some painkilling eye drops & used a dye to see if there was any damage, i was prescribed tiacil or fucalthmic? spelling? eye drops & it cleared up nicely in about a week.
healing vibes & shes a very pretty piggy ,
xx
Thank you. Do you suggest getting to the vets now?try this suggestion of mine in Maisy&Poppys thread

if the eye is badly damaged or the hay is sticking into the eyeball itself then take her to the vet ASAP but if it is only lightly damaged the salt water solution should be enough to see her through the night & visit a vet tomorrow, if the hay is just against the eye/or under the eyelid you might be able to flush it out with the salt solution or tease it out with a damp cotton bud, piece of kitchen towel twisted round. xx
Well it feels easy to bend, there's several strands of it, like it's all attached to one little pod which is obviously in the eyeis it a soft piece of grassy hay or a stalky piece of hay? the grassy type i would maybe try easing it out but the stalky type it would probably better done by the vet. xx
We don't have those eye drops. So shall I try with the dampened kitchen roll?Mine have only ever had a soft piece in their eye, it usually travels to the corner & then it can be removed with the corner of a folded soft tissue that had been dampened. Sometimes I use Brolene eye drops in the eye first that usually washes it to the corner & stops any infections x
I'm just worried if it's too late to leave tonight. We tried ringing the emergency vets and there's no answerOuch that looks like it's embedded itself into the cornerI would say vet visit in the morning, don't leave it to Monday x

Tonight or tomorrow? Is there something I need to do tonight?I wouldn't not at the angle it isIf it was the other corner then you could wipe gently towards her nose, but that hay is poking towards the other way. I would see a vet x
Glad she is getting better.Thank you all. I feel a right fool for getting so worried about it, I just wanted to prevent any permanent damage.
We were going to go to alfreton emergency but it takes 30 mins to get there so we were suggested to go to the PDSA closer to us, they were very good, the lady vet got the hay out easily, Lola perked up straight away as she did that, head tilt gone and such, she does have a ulcer on her eye from her trying to scratch the hay out, been given some eye drops which is similar to a paste twice a day. She suggested we go back either today or tomorrow to make sure the ulcer is getting better.
