I had been worrying About my young piggies as they didn't seem to be eating much hay and I know it should make up the vast majority of thier diet. I had bought pets at home own brand hay initially, tried them on the below from Jollyes and they LOVE it as you will see. It was clearly just poor quality hay from p@h!

I know I know we shouldn't support stores selling live animals but I find it difficult to get large items delivered due to working full time! I'm not sure of the bag weight but it was £3.09 and it's pretty big! image.webpimage.webp

I don't buy hay from P@H as i find it expensive and poor quality. I have found bits of baling twine in as well as it is dusty. Have you thought of buying conventional bales of meadow hay from a farm, they range between £3-£6 and would last alot longer and the guineas love to burrow under with it having long strands :)

 That's a bit concerning about the dead frog!

With hay bales I would struggle to store anything larger than that bag -my kitchen cupboards are full to the brim with pig products as it is! Thanks for the tip though I will have a look into it.

I agree that buying bales from a farm is cost effective - IF you have the storage facilities. However, hay needs to be kept dry . I would sooner pay a bit more to buy in quantities I can store easily . We had a post recently where some hay had gone mouldy and it made the guinea pigs ill.

PS - that hay from Jolleys looks lovely. I note it says on the front that it says it is sweet scented. I am sure that is just a term making potential buyers know that it smells nice BUT,
I just want to make forum members aware that I was looking at hay in a discount shop in a retail outlet and the hay they sold WAS scented. I think the idea is that it is for odour control if hay is used a bedding. It clearly stated this on the back of the packet so I advise everyone to have a good read before buying .

Also try the range they do Devon meadow hay no sprays no insecticides or weed killers it is a heavy compressed pack for about a fiver it is a 3.5kg bag I use it for my piggy peanut he loves it and Timothy hay is supposed to be good for their teeth too

Hi, I tried PAH and wasn't impressed. I live in the north of Scotland so delivery cost is an issue so I tried timothyhay.co.uk. It cost £22 for 10 kg delivered. My guinea pigs love it, it smells lovely has really long strands but it is very coarse, good for their teeth I hope!

My feet hurt :(

I have honestly been stressed out over hay all day :( I've been to the city in the hunt for childrens saddles and hay for our boys...well I found the perfect saddles but not the perfect hay...grrr
I posted on here a while back about pets at home hay being more like straw than hay, it was all brown and not suitable for eating, I brought a bag of meadow hay from my local pet shop it's ok but it's dusty and my 3 are not over keen so I need to hunt online I think, I'm going to order from the place @piggyfan and @GloriousGuineaGirl have said about. Which hays can they have? I know meadow and Timothy not sure which others are ok though.
I worry about buying from a farm incase they have sprayed anything on it and because of mites etc.

Aww you have had a hard day. Why not try www.hayforpets.co.uk? My lot love the ings hay. As far as I know meadow and Timothy are the only ones they can have as aleph aha is for babies and pregnant sows.

Just ordered the big bag of ings hay :) from hayforpets I think I have finally found what I've been looking for.... if they like it I won't be buying anything other, you guys are great.
After all that I got my hay without leaving the sofa :lol!:

Great news! My pigs and bunny love it.

I found that the boys loved the hay for pets Ings hay but it was too hard to use as bedding - had twigs in it. I use their meadow hay for bedding and fill a medium chube with the Timothy and rye. They utterly adore their hay chube - will eat the lot within 24hours.

Thank you piggyfan :) I'm off to order it now after looking at that site. I wish I had stubbled across this post after hours earlier ha ha :)
Big huge thank you :)

Silly spell check thingy it keeps changing my words to what it thinks I should put...grr

That was meant to say....... stumbled across this post a few hours earlier

Yes its lovely hay! My piggies like it. Then again my piggies eat EVERTHING!

I always use Excell Burgess Timothy Hay with Dandelion and Marigold.
It has lots of decent fibre, always seems fresh and is easy to store.
Not to mention it has Dandelion which aids urinary tract health and bits of Marigold which supposedly helps build up there immune system.
My Bramble loves it anyways. :)

I've just started getting Burgess excel Timothy hay with dandelion and marigold that is what I was recommended in p@h I'm mixing it with meadow hay so peanut has the best of both

thanks for sharing the hay for pets link! looks very good value
That bag I posted a pic of on page one is the 9.5kg bag it works out at £16 per bag that includes the p&p which is fab as it's a bale of hay so it weighs a bit :) it's long strands of hay and not bits which is great, I think it will last a good while. It smells lovely, it's green and they loved it....a winner I think

I'm hoping mine will arrive today.I've ordered the same thing to give it a try. I've tried the excel with dandelion and marigold. My group of 4 girls won't touch it but my 2 boys and pair of girls will. I've also got the PurePastures hay from the Range at £3.49 for a 3.7kg bag and that's always a hit with all of mine.

This one says its organic no sprays used just left to grow then harvested. I'm a fuss pot and I'm really pleased with this hay. The strands are very long about 4-5 the length of my guinea pigs lol which is much better then the dusty bitty stuff I brought from the pet shop. I like the sound of the burgess hay you can buy in pet shoos but it's between £5-6 for a small bag. This hay I've just brought Is lovely no dust it smells really fresh and sweet it's not brown at all I'm very pleased with it and I would happily recommend it :)
This is an all round kind of hay I think, I'm sure Timothy and meadow are the other two hays apart from this one, they are the same kind of price...the £16 bag is the most expensive but it's going to last me a long time a month plus the bag it comes in is good strong thick plastic so it should keep well..I brought thus hay for feeding not bedding)
