I'm scared Someone help.... What does it mean if her hair is falling out along her jaw and is red and looks it rites at the skin?

Hmm sounds like a vet visit first thing in the morning.

Do u have a photo you could post of the hair &jawline so the experts know more what you mean to give suggestions to discuss with the vet.

Is the hair falling out in chunks or with skin bits attached or just the hair coming out as single hairs but lots of it?

Do u mean the skin is red &inflamed?
Does she have a red lump or is it flat &red?

Does she scratch at the affected area?
Can u see any little guests in her hair?
Have u felt any lumps on her jaw
that may indicate an abcess?

Fingers crossed &healing vibes being sent your way. Xx

Good call on the syringe water!

She is on .1ml of meloxicam every 12 hours

The vet gave us a powder called critical care(the apple banana flavor to be specific) and told us to mix a tablespoon of the wpowder with 2 table spoons of warm water, and then syringe feed it to her throughout the day (4-6) sessions. So is it unhealthy to let her eat as much as she wants/can? I just let her eat out of the bowl and she ate a lot. She has eaten 3/4 of the tablespoon so far today and it's 12:36 am my time. So is that okay or should I limit how much she is eating

Once the powdered food is made into a paste, you can draw it up into a syringe to see how much you are giving her before puting it on the bowl. You are aiming for a 80ml minimum in her current condition per 24 hours.

She Needs as much as she can eat, literally , so by all means if she wants more, let her have it! She wont and cant eat too much so let her have as much as she likes. You will need more than one small sachet though so will need to get more tomorrow.

If she stops eating willingly, start syringing it into the side of her mouth.

I posted three photos the first one is why we took her to the vet before finding out about how bad he molars are.

@Ajf6789 I am going to tag @furryfriends (TEAS) who has specialist knowledge of dental issues.

I see you already have a thread in the health and illness section on this subject. Please could I ask you to stick to one thread as it causes confusion if you post the same issues in different places on the forum. I will ask @sport_billy or @LisaAli to merge this thread with your one in the health and illness forum.

It could be a fungal infection- she will need treatment from the vet for that. Its not uncommon when they are run down from other illnesses.

I dont know if its just the angle, but is her face swollen where the redness is? If it is and shes scratching it causing the red skin, its more than likely pointing back to the teeth causing her pain.

Those front teeth are verg long bless her, hopefully the vet will trim them down as well as burring the molars soon.

Ok I'll only use the other on after this message

We had the front teeth clipped so they are back to a more normal length.... The vet said that the molars are pointed outwards into the cheek so I think that's what's causing it, thanks for the help!

Thank you all for the help, advice and support! We are going to be taking her in for her grinding of the molars and hopefully they will grow back properly and grind properly. I will let you all know how she is in the future!

I agree with @Adelle discuss with your vet possible fungal &the dosage of meloxicam (I'm no good at dosages )see if it can be increased. If its due to pain this may stop itaggravating him so scratch it less making it less sore.

Might be worth moving this thread from chat to health &illness section.
For more advice suggestions.

What do u think @sport_billy ?

Good luck with the teeth too. I think @furryfriends dental pigs have their treatments little &often. But I know Simon in the UK at the cat &rabbit clinic does dentals with no anaesthetic/consciously so can done on a regular basis without all the risks of using anaesthetics often which causes problems. Xx

Threads merged together, please keep all info relating to Hazel in this thread. Sending lots of positive vibes

The molars of a guinea pig are supposed to be slanted. So many vets seem to think they should mirror the straight style of rabbit teeth and burr them down to try to get them straight, which is where lots of mistakes are made and pigs are lost.

The top arcades will flare out towards the cheeks, the bottom arcade tip inwards towards the tongue. Problems arise when the teeth overgrow - top arcade will cause ulceration and lacerations to the cheek tissue and bottom arcade can cause lacerations to the tongue and eventually grow over and trap the tongue itself.

Sadly, the treatment of dental issues in guinea pigs is very hit and miss. You are best to do some research regarding the amount of work of this type that the vet you are using has done. In my own experience, many years ago I had a dental pig who I was told by an exotics specialist: 'we've done its teeth twice now and there's no improvement, so I suggest you call it a day'. Needless to say, never went back there with my boy. Look for a vet who has hands on experience in this field and who has compassion for guinea pigs, rather than a certificate on the wall. It really will make a huge difference.

Do I need to have my finger inside her mouth to feel for the bumps.... Or could I be able to feel them on the skin/fur
No, not in her mouth, just along the sides of her face, low along the jaw. If there's an abscess, it will pop up there.
