We're not having a good day here today. I let my guinea pigs out in their run when I got home from work . The first thing I noticed was some sort of fungus in the run which I have posted about in a seperate thread. I sorted this out before there was any harm done but then noticed that Max had a lump near his boys bits.( ps he was neutered last December ).

I managed to get an appointment at the vet straight away and Max is going to have a scan as the vet is unsure whether he has a hernia or abscess .

I would be grateful for everyone's views and would be grateful if you could send healing vibes to Max.

Max vibes for Max. Get well soon

Hope it is something that they can fix straight away. Get well soon Max xx

What a worry for you. Hope the vet soon finds what the problem is. Healing vibes x

Hope all goes well, lots of healing vibes to Max, please keep us updated on your little dude

Thank you all for your kind words. Max had a scan which showed he had an abscess. He's had surgery today to have it cleaned (debrided) . He's on antibiotics (Baytril at the moment - until swab results come back) and Metcam .The wound is packed with a dressing containing Silver. He's being kept there overnight and I have been informed that he is eating OK. The vet intends to take the dressing down on Monday and is advising that he stays there until the dressing comes down. I'm not sure about him staying in until Monday but want Max to have the best chance of this clearing up so will follow vet's advice.

Just a quick update as Max is now 3 weeks into his treatment. Max had an abscess drained and I have been irrigating the wound. The vet is now happy to stop irrigating it. Poor Max has had to be kept in a clean environment - so he has been separated from the girls since this started. He is still on antibiotics .
All in all, he seems to be coping well. I think he's coping better with it than me! But, he was very grumpy yesterday and , this morning , he seemed to enjoy me handling him - not because of what I was doing but because it was stimulation. So, I think he is beginning to feel lonely. He is due his next check up next week so I hope he gets the all clear and can be reunited with the girls.

I am so pleased that he is making a good recovery. Hopefully he will get back to his ladies soon. Well done for spotting the problem so quickly x

Your doing the right thing I'm sure it will get sorted x
PS. my rabbits called max

Glad to hear Max is improving. Also well done to you I know how hard it is treating a guinea pig who has had an abcess removed.

Glad to hear Max is improving, must have been such a worry!

I must admit, I wouldn't have coped if I hadn't had the support of people on this forum and a local guinea pig owner. She's not on this forum and I know her because she boards my guinea pigs when I am on holiday.
She looked after Max for a few days when I had a commitment I couldn't get out of . She has regularly texted me throughout this asking how Max is doing. One day, I was having difficulty irrigating his wound and she let me take him up to her and helped me.
It's so nice to have people around who understand and can help. This has been a horrible time for me and Max. It has brought back all the memories of losing Monty last year when he had an abscess and I have shed quite a few tears over the last 3 weeks. I am so relieved that the outcome is looking more optimistic for Max.

YOu have done a fantastic job of looking after max and your care has got him through this.

Can't believe I missed this thread. So sorry Max has not been well. I hope he gets better soon. Poor thing you must have been worried sick.Big hugs to you and Max.xx

Thank you . I'm feeling much better now he is showing signs of improvement. I can't wait until he gets the all clear and can be reunited with his girls.

Just wanted to check in and ask how Max is? Lovely to meet you (and him) at the weekend. Any photos of the girls (who were hiding while we were there) on the forum anywhere?

Max is due his check up today . All looks OK so I'm hoping that he'll get the all clear and can be reunited with Bess and Sparkle.

I'm afraid I haven't had time to take any pictures recently @PiggySmitten - I posted this thread when Bess and Sparkle 1st arrived ...

Hope the check has gone well today and you are able to reunite them. I love the photos of Bess and Sparkle. The one in this thread makes me think of our pair of girls, Biscuit and Crumble. They are similar colours to each other like your two.

I haven't put the ramp tunnel on yet as I don't want them spending too much time on a hot hutch - am trying to persuade them they are better in the shade on the grass where they can be cooled by the gentle breeze. Will definitely let you know though.

It was very hot this afternoon and decided it wouldn't be fair to transport Max in a hot car. Have rearranged appointment for tomorrow morning.

Love the names Biscuit and Crumble.

My trio have kept their rescue names.
