Jerrypig is off to the vets first-thing tomorrow morning.

I noticed blood in his wee last Wednesday. With his bladder sludge this is not usually cause for too much concern, and according to the vet is to be expected from time to time. Jerry takes a daily dose of Metacam, Dibenyline and half a capsule of Cystaid. At the first sign of blood I usually increase the Cystaid to a full capsule (on the vet's advice) and the blood usually stops after a day or two. He then stays on the full capsule for two weeks to help get rid of any bladder irritation and then I halve his dosage again. I've done this three times since he had his bladder flushed last May.

After noticing the blood last week I increased his Cystaid dosage and it all seemed to clear up by the weekend. I was a little concerned that this took longer than usual, but was pleased that his wee had turned clear again. He's just been out running in the kitchen and the pink blood spots are back :(

I'm concerned as he's still on the full capsule of Cystaid. In himself he seems his usual, happy self. I've just weighed him and he's put on a few grams since his last weigh-in. He doesn't seem in any more discomfort than usual (other than the occasional 'bad days' which, again, are to be expected with bladder sludge) He's eating, drinking and causing mayhem like normal.

I've just rung the vet and I'm taking him in at 9.50am. Luckily I'm not in work until afternoon. I'm trying not to think the worst. I suppose it could be a UTI - the Metacam would would disguise the usual tell-tale signs of infection. It could also just be a slightly worse flare-up than usual. But after losing my Benny to a bladder stone the sight of blood still terrifies me...

Sending positive vibes and gentle hugs for Jerrypig, hope it's all sorted soon x

I hate bladder issues with a passion they seem to plague lots of little ones, it's such a shame.

Hope you get Jerry sorted at the vets tomorrow and it's nothing too serious, just a stubborn infection. Lots of love to Jerry x x

oh no, i think we all have a bladder stone story dont we mallethead

really hope its sorted out quickly and isnt a stone xx

Thanks everyone. I've given him some probiotics just in case he's put on antibiotics tomorrow. He's happily munching his hay completely oblivious to everything!

Good luck at the vets Jerry xx

Hope it goes alright tomorrow at the vets tomorrow! Keep us updated on how it goes. Sending lots of hugs, wheeks, and healing vibes to you and Jerry from me and the piggies xx

We're back from the vets. Jerry did me proud and was incredibly brave. A thorough examination didn't suggest the presence of any stones, and Jerry didn't seem too uncomfortable at being poked and prodded. He was given an antibiotic injection (I can't remember the name, but it began with 'C') which will last 10 days. The vet said it is an alternative to Baytril. If the blood hasn't cleared up by this time next week then we'll x-ray.

Fingers crossed for Jerrypig.

fingers crossed there will be no more blood, and the antibiotics will help x

Jerry sends his thanks for the well wishes :)

He's been out for floor-time and we've have some more pink wees. I suppose it's early days yet though.

Yes, early days yet. Does he have any metacam? What was the antibiotic out of interest? Hope Jerry gets well soon

Jerry has been on Metacam every day for the past year, unfortunately. Because of his bladder sludge he will never be without it.

I'm not sure about the antibiotic. It began with a 'C' - sorry that's not very helpful! I've never heard of it before. I think I'll post a new thread now to see if anyone else knows. I'm really annoyed at myself that I didn't ask the vet to write down the name at the time! mallethead

Sorry Cath, I realised as I posted he is on metacam because of his issues.... As you've told me this before. I have done so much research on bladder piggies and never came across it before so would be interested to know what it could have been. I know what it's like at the vets, you do forget things as your trying to take all the info in...
The only thing that I thought of was maybe Catrophen, which lasts around 10 days and works in a similar way to cystease or cystaid - but it's not an antibiotic, so probably wasn't it.

That's OK :) He's on such a concoction of medication for his bladder that I struggle to keep track of them all!

It was definitely an antibiotic. I mentioned how difficult it can be to get the pigs to take Baytril. The vet agreed entirely and said that the injection was an alternative that didn't involve all the stress of trying to give antibiotics by syringe (which can surely only be a good thing!)

Baytril is nightmare isn't it, Septrin on the other hand is so loved by the girls its ridiculous....

Hope you find out, will keep an eye out for answer and obviously be checking your thread to find out how little Jerry is getting on. x

Jerry isn't doing very well :(

He's not eating for himself. His poos are virtually non-existent. I'm syringe-feeding and I've just spent 10 minutes on the phone trying to get the vet to believe me that Emperid can be given in oral form and that I would like to collect some immediately.

I'm so worried...

I've been given Emperid 0.8ml to syringe three times a day. That sounds like an awful lot? Does anyone have any experience with it?

Biggest dose I've done is 0.5ml three time a day. Hope Jerry is ok, hugs to you, know how worried you must be feeling. Each day the antibiotics though must be getting out his system, its horrible how much they've knocked him about X

Check over on guinealynx for their meds guide about how much is normally given. It's good your vet listened anyway. Hope it helps.

Jerry is now reliant on me so I'm going to keep it together to get him through this. I know how much of a fighter he is, and so I know he would help himself if he could.

I've given his first dose of gut stimulant and have syringed around 10ml of Recovery food. He's now on his snugglesafe with his back turned away from me all fluffed up and looking a very sorry sight. I've set an alarm to feed him again at 12.30am, 3.30am, 6.30am etc
