for a while, I have been thinking about getting my guinea pig from Petco or PetSmart. Then I discovered their supplier. "Sun Pet Ltd" a filthy , filthy place. Long story short, I refuse to buy a guinea pig from PetCo or PetSmart now, even though they are treated ok at the store, where they come from is a horrible place. So adoption . Well think about it. where do the guinea pigs at the adoption come from? probably a pet store. the original owner did not want them and gave them to the rescue . so basically even rescue guinea pigs come from these Mills, because that's where pet stores (Petco PetSmart) get their guinea pigs. Through my research, I also found a non chain family run Pet shop called "Pet World" in Natick MA. I will go today and have called and asked if they have guinea pigs. Answer: Yes. this pet store has a special license to sell exotic pets, but all you have to do to optain that is to pay for it. It's a family run place, and reviews seem good. I wish I could adopt a guinea pig but read above about what I said. I have not found any "Guinea pig breeders" near me. I live in Massachusetts United States

Thanks :)

Hi and welcome!

Have you considered this rescue place here to get your guinea pigs from? It is the best rescue in yours and your surrounding states. There are sadly hardly any guinea pig rescues in your neck of the woods, but I have a friend from New Hampshire who has travelled all the way to get her rescue guinea pigs from there and was pleased by the standard of care. According to her - and like you, she has done her research over a wide area - it is the best and safest place to get guinea pigs from in the North East.

Please be aware that we are a strictly non-breeding forum, and that includes breeder information. Any regulations for breeders so far only cover the showing side, but not the conditions at home in many countries, which can be on the horrendous side even with accredited show breeders.

Thank You :) I will definitely look into this place, seems good and closest to me :)

Welcome to the forum :)

Unfortunately pretty much all piggies come from awful conditions at some point or another. None of my babies have come from great places but I know that through rescuing I'm not supporting the breeding of piggies on a mass scale by giving them my money.

I personally dislike breeders as there is little to no regulation put in place for them (depending on where you live) and they're shockingly irresponsible with the way they breed and "deal" with unwanted "stock".

If you can I would always recommend rescuing, no matter their circumstances before you meet them you know that you're improving their lives by giving them the best care and home than they could ever have :)

I had to buy mine as there was no rescues near me... But now I think of myself as her rescue! Also, I used to live is Massachusetts when I was a kid, in Maynard. Just thought I'd throw that in haha

Yes but rescuing a piggie isn't about where they were born. It's about giving them a good home after the life they had before( why they are in a rescue )
