help! piggie slowly dying after malocclusion surgery

Well done for being such a dedicated slave.
Long may he continue to respond to your love and care
So true! He’s had another good enough day. I was here all day, so we did regular feeding early til late, tonight he’s up to 730g. He walked all around the flat again today, it’s so cool to see him doing his thing.
We’ll see what tomorrow brings....

Well he just had his happy half hour! He perked up before the 11:30ish feed after well, looking expired all day. then during the feed does no more than go for walks round the bathroom then coming over to the syringe for a slurp then off again! far gone are the force feeds! then after a bowl full of pellet/cc he’s off to the lounge for a fairly speedy wander ending up lazing on the just so hot water bottle. If I wasn’t for his drooly chin I’d wonder if I wasn’t being taken for a mug by another male lol
in any case it’s sooo nice to see him so much brighter. he’s feeling the forum good wishes just like I am! and we hit 700g before bedtime! yaay!
xx

That sounds very encouraging! Hang on in there!

Well, I’m sitting in the car waiting for news, Buddy is with the vet.
She’s a real specialist, there was another guinea pig and ferret in the waiting room. She looked in his mouth and said yikes ( in french..) She said she’ll try to cut some more but explained that gp teeth and jaws are really tricky to fix, no guarantee it’ll work. at least she didn’t take one look and say forget it. and she said his weight was ok enough and that he seems in an otherwise ok state. she really seems to know her stuff so I’m happy I’ve managed to get him to her.

thank you all for all your help too. that’s what him here today!

Fingers crossed all goes well today. Rest assured you have done an excellent job to get his weight up and now it's the horrible waiting game

So, Buddy has a too thick and wobbly bottom left incisor. She put him to sleep briefly to look. I just saw him sitting on a heated cushion on a cage looking ok.
She said she’ll keep him til saturday and give him lots of anti inflammatory meds to see if he manages to eat. The wobbly bottom front tooth must be paining him, she said. She said she’ll take a closer look at his loose tooth and see what she should do. She said over and over that she cannot guarantee he’ll be ok, that she has lost lots of guinea pigs as their teeth problems are so complex and even when it’s ‘fixed’ it still doesn’t work. She did say though that it’s positive he tries to eat and that he ate right after pain killer jab. She said it looks like the real issue is the teeth, not something else that’s undiagnosed .
We both agreed it’s only fair to try to save him and if we fail, so be it. She was everything I hoped, pro, knowledgeable and a really nice person. Buddy is in safe hands.
She said she’ll call me to tell me how he is tomorrow.
xx

The thickened incisor is something we have seen a lot in our dental piggies, here at TEAS. When it's been wobbly, Simon removes it. Some grow back and others don't. If that is all the problem is, it should be easily fixed. Infection causes the thickening and we use the antibiotic Zithromax (azithromycin) which sorts it quickly. The piggy will be left with a thickened tooth, but it shouldn't cause any further issues. I hope Buddy is soon feeling very much better.

Thank you for your concern for Buddy!
I’ve heard no more from the vet, I think she may call tomorrow.xx

Thank you, it’s good to hear that. I was wondering how he would cope with one incisor if it came to it. She didn’t say anything about an antibiotic, just anti inflammatory meds. he did have one after the op though on one of my many return trips to othet vet. I guess I just have to trust her. It must have been causing him real pain, don’t you think? pretty staggering that vet no 1 didn’t see the issue isn’t it.
It would seem that this is the ‘only’ problem, she said too teeth issues may hide the real problem but said fairly safe to say this is it.

Well he sounds to be in the best place right now. I have everything crossed for a successful outcome

Here at TEAS we have two piggies with just two incisors and one piggy with only one incisor and they all do really well. They do need to get their incisors burred every three weeks as they haven't got the opposing teeth to wear against. Maddie, who only has one incisor, is quite a large girl and we always joke about just how big she would be if she had all four!

That’s really cute! And also good to hear other little ( and large! ) piggies cope ok. Maybe Buddy will be joining their club!

i’ve been working all day and got message from vet telling me he isn’t ok today and that she’s “pessimistic”
says he’s huddled up and not eating his syringes. I now have to wait til tomorrow to talk to her.
of course he’s not ok, he has a bad tooth that as far as I know is still untreated. I’m really worried he’s noe underfed and so will loose weight quickly. i thought the idea was she’d look at trying to make him better, seems she’s just watching him not eat his pellets. nightmare.
sorry for the crappy frustrating news.

Glad you feel you can vent here.
It’s what the forum is about.

Can you bring him home tonight so that you can look after him?
thank you. no, it’s miles away. I hate knowing his in a cage mikes from the tlc he needs.

Oh, this is so sad, you had high hopes that this vet would be good, let’s pray she is x

thank you, that’s very sweet of you.
I am gutted I must admit. It’s really doing my head in to picture him alone. he needs to be snuggled up a blanket and I wish I’d thought to tell them to mix pellets with his cc - he eats it happily like that.
I’ll call as soon as they open...

Are you saying she's done nothing about the tooth? Why is she keeping him there? The tooth needs to be dealt with and then he should start to make progress. I so wish you were in the UK and could get Simon to see him. He isn't going to make any progress or be able to take syringe food well, whilst he's got a wobbly and painful tooth. I really hope that something can be done soon to help the little guy x
