Hi
My lovely Rosie aged 1 is not very well and she seems to have symptoms of a lot of things. She is sleepy, not eating much, makes click noises when she breathes, crying a bit, seems to have a bloated/sore tummy. She seems better sitting upright against my chest than laying down. She may have sun stroke so I have given her some water, some loxicom for her sore tummy and some water mixed with a touch of honey as it says on the Internet. What can I do. My mum dosent think she is poorly enough to go to the vets.
Thanks

The clicking sounds when breathing is a sign of some sort of lung problem such as pneumonia. I think that it's very important to convince your mother that you must take Rosie to the vets ASAP. Wishing you all the best to you and Rosie. xx

It sounds like your guinea pigs is very poorly, please ask you mum to take her to the vet asap. Their stomachs stop working if they are not eating and they can deteriorate very quickly.

This does sound like a life or death emergency. Sounds like could be heat stroke, a URI and bloat. All of which can be fatal if left untreated and all of which will require prescribed medication. It is urgent that you get a correct diagnosis and treatment asap

Hi!

Rosie needs to see a vet ASAP as a life and death emergency!
Severe bloat is extremely painful and will kill if not treated promptly! The crying is from acute severe pain. Rosie is suffering terribly right now.
Lethargy is a red alarm light that the body is in danger of shutting or is already shutting down.

Please show you mother this post and these links here:
List Of Life And Death Out-of-hours Emergencies
Bloat, Gi Stasis ( No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

You need to syringe feed because a guinea pig that is not eating is a dying piggy. Guinea pigs cannot fast; one leaf of dandelion equals about a peanut for humans. If Rosie is unable to swallow (only give very little to not choke her and wait until it has gone down) or struggling far in excess of her lethargy, then it is already too late and the one kind thing you (and your mother) can do is to please have her euthanised and not let her die in sheer agony!

She seems a little better and my mum says no vet despite showing her the thread. She says guinea pigs are a waiting game. She is running around a little now and has eaten some more. Given her some water and some honey mixed with water

It's not a waiting game with piggies Your piggie is ill and NEEDS TO SEE A VET! As the adult your Mum is legally responsible for your piggy's well being and is legally obliged to take your piggy to a vet to get it looked after. Your piggy will die if she doesn't see a vet. Just seeing your piggie eating a bit is not enough to keep her alive. My Christian had to have a life saving operation 4 weeks ago and although he was eating straight after surgery and when he came home I knew it wasn't enough to keep him alive. I syringe fed him day and night for 3 days and nights every 2-3 hours and then went back to the vet for some special medicine to sort out his tummy so that he would want to eat again properly for himself. Luckily the special medicine worked and now he is back to his usual cheeky self and feeling better than ever. He only survived after the op because I was syringe feeding him even though he was eating.

It is vitally important that Rosie eats constantly she cannot survive on water. Her guts are starting to shut down and she will be in severe pain.

I agree with everyone else. Your parents could face prosecution if they do not have her seen by a vet. Please let your mum know this. Guinea pigs are not a waiting game, in fact they are the exact opposite.

Her breathing seems a lot better and is outside tucking into grass. I think it was sunstroke because she was really hot. Last night I put her into a shallow bowl of Luke warm water to cool her down and the loxicom seems to have worked as she is not in pain anymore. If she stops eating outside today I will syringe feed her. What do you think? If she stays the same or deteriorates I will try again to get my mum to take her to the vets but we struggle to pay the vets bills

@Toffee321 You should try to save up some pocket money or money from doing chores to help towards vet bills.

If you are certain it was heatstroke then please make sure she isn't left in the sun again today.

Yes she is inside with a fan today and I will save some money, however I don't have a lot of time. I will keep up with the fluids and make sure she keeps eating

She is inside but now refusing lettuce so I am going to try syringe feeding later. Have you got any tips on that. What do I put in the syringe and how much?

I fed her a little and now seems to be eating grass again. She almost seems back to normal apart from her breathing which is still a little weird. I will keep a close eye on her but she seems better.

@Toffee321 You're doing all you can if your mum won't take her to the vet. Continue to monitor her as closely as you are. Step in with syringe feeding if she seems to off her food and keep her as cool as you can.

I will do and my mum says yes to the vet because she is getting worse. We will home tomorrow

I'm really sorry to have to post this but my dear Rosie passed away in the night. I don't think it was heatstroke because she blew up like a balloon and it was too late for the vet. She had a happy but short little life and I have lots of lovely memories including one particular time when she was 9 weeks and she escaped into a neighbours garden and spent the night there and I sat outside the bush for a whole day! Thanks for all your support. She gained weight massively over the last few months so I wondered if it could have been cancer

I’m so very sorry that you lost your sweet Rosie :( if she blew up like a balloon, it sounds like she died from severe bloat which is a medical emergency.

Please save up some money in to a piggy fund and take any future piggies to the vet as soon as you notice something isn’t quite right :(

(((Hugs))) xx

So sorry to hear this.
Rosie was such a beautiful girl.
Lily and Pepper will feel rather lost for a day or two but should get on with the business of living and surviving within a couple of days.
For you it will take longer so allow yourself time to grieve and be gentle with yourself
