Hello

My Freddie is approx 5 1/2 years old, recently been to Ashleigh Vets in Chorlton for heavy/hooty breathing and general puffed up grumpiness. diagnosed with possible enlarged heart and put on Frusol, I understand as a diuretic it will make him urinate more however his tummy now seems to be constantly stained and he is getting a slight urine scald on his back feet :(

He is as active as usual and eating and drinking, still vocal when the hay bag comes out.

Just wondering if this is normal and wether there is anything safe I can pop on his feet to protect/sooth them? Vet also gave Metacam to use as required, will this help?

What bedding do you have him on? Changing to something like vetbed can be really helpful to stop urine scolding of the feet as it ebbs the urine away. I would bathe (at least his feet) as often as you can. If he is artheritic or not feeling himself he will be less likely to move and therefore more likely to sit in his wee.

Wishing your piggy all the best.

x.

Thankyou, he is on fleece but I have popped a fluffy vetbed in and he has plonked himself on that :)

He's had a dunk in some lukewarm water and seemed much happier

As a diuretic it will make him pee loads but he needs to not sit in it!

Some piggies have a terrible habit of sitting in their own pee no matter what you do but loads of absorbant bedding and a wee wash/wipe down every so often should help.

Thanks for your help :)

I have noticed his "peepee" seems to have retracted a bit which might be part of the reason for the messy wee, will keep an eye on it!

hiya my freddie is on frusol for the fluid in his lungs/heart problems. has the vet also put him on fortekor for his heart? (my freddie has this as well) he wees a lot and drinks a lot but i found with fred that once he started upping the drinking his urine was not so strong/acidic and haven't had problems with scald. he is on vet bed too and lies in his wee if he can! . mine also is the noisiest for food too! my fred's heart has effected his sight slighly due to the increased pressure from the heart but is has settled/not got worse now. perhaps that is why he is so vocal!! my vet is Mark Rowlands at Trinity VEt in maidstone, kent and has quite a bit of experience with heart piggies. i'm sure your vet is piggie savvy but if he is unsure i am sure that he could give mark a call. i'm claire hayles if he wants to refer to someone! :) gorgeous guinea have a perfect paws lotion which helps scald google them and have a look x
