I'm embarrassed to be asking this question a month into having guinea pigs but I really do need help.

I have been searching into behaviour of guinea pigs and skittish behaviour as I feel I am doing everything I can to help my new piggy get used to me but he is still so fearful and tries to run for dear life whenever I hold him.

It appears that he's not gaining confidance in me because of the way I pick up my piggies. I put my hands either side of their bodies and sort of scoop them up. I have read this is wrong but I've also read conflicting right ways to do it.

I have read that you pick them up at the top of their necks then support their bottoms with the other hand or to slide your hand gently underneath then cup it's back and sides with the others.

How do you pick up your piggies? Please don't assume thar I am not caring for my piggies as I have not learnt this very basic skill. I am forever reading and researching about piggy care. I'm always posting for help an just want to learn.. I just havn't read about handling till now :embarassed:

You should try bribing him lotsa with food if hes skittish that sometimes works,I normally pick mine up gently around the waist and then support the bum

Thank you. I'll try doing that for Trek first to get my confidence up, he normally just sits there waiting for a cuddle anyway

Thats how i pick mine up too :)

I put one hand under the stomach and one with the bum. If they're skittish and hard to pick up I'll sometimes get them from either side of the stomach and then change them so I'm supporting their bums.

Usually how ours are picked up too :)

When you have picked him up and had a cuddle - try and replace him in the cage bum first to protect his teeth

Thank you everyone. I have had them both out one by one - Daughter in bed having nap, husband in the garage, telly off and peace and quiet. I piked them up hand under waist then supported their bums. Still a little nervy but that will be my confidence too. Puddles was calmer he sat for quite a while too although I could feel him shaky, coped well with the ringing phone but would not be tempted by carrot or sugar snap peas :-\
