Ive just picked up gwen and she was a raw red bleeding patch on her back - now i know its not mites as I'm currently treating them with invermectin, so i think that maybe duke has done something to her? I'm not sure.... what do i do? i havent noticed him bullying her, but the reason why i suspect its him rather than francesca is because francesca keeps herself to herself usually and its always duke that follows gwen around, sometimes butting her out of her house, but usually they cozy up together. Ive currently taken gwen out of her cage and put her in a seperate carrier untill i get some advice on what to do. somebody give me some advice pls! I'm new to all this and not sure what to do for the best!

If it's a bite, I'd rathe bet on Francesca, but if Gwen is really ithcing badly, she could have done it to herself.

what does fungal look like? what are the symptoms? what causes it? I'm not sure -there is a little hairloss, but I'm not sure...

thats the thing, she's not really itching badly anymore, she's on her second week of invermectin.... I'm just totally confused now...

ok I'm sorry i cant get a picture - my camera phone is broke and this computer doesnt have a place to install the memory card from my other camera...

hmmm I'm thinking maybe it is fungal....
what do you suggest i do with the wound in the meantime? it looks really sore....
those shampoos from gorgeous guineas - would that clear the problem up? and how many times would i need to bathe them before it does clear up?

I used Nizoral shampoo on my piggie who had a similar sounding red patch. You get it in most chemists and it is recommended by Peter Gurney. It helped clear up the condition. Perhaps you could try this until you get a chance to order from Gorgeous Guineas. Have a look at the GG website but in the meantime you could try Nizoral. Good luck.

i just did a search and Tracy suggested putting caneston cream on the open sores? have you tried this? if this is safe i will get some first thing, as well as the shampoo

If it is fungal then definitely get some of their shampoo it's great stuff and you can use it again and again. I recommend the shampoo from gorgous guineas definitely.

As for how many times I dont know, their melts are supposed to be good. I had one guinea with a fungal area and daktarin cleared it up fast. I'm not sure if you can put it on broken skin though poor Gwen. :(

i know :( thats why i thought of putting the caneston cream on - if its safe to put on..... then when its healed slightly i can bathe her...

I tried Eurax cream and also tea tree creme. Both ok'd by PG.. Neither worked and my piggie just kept licking them off. It was only when I bathed her in the Nirolex shampoo that the itching subsided. Your piggie may not have the same condition as my piggie had so please try whatever remedy you feel is the best. What worked for my piggie may not work for yours but it wouldnt hurt to shampoo the piggie with Nizoral then apply a creme. I hope the condition clears up...

Have a look on the Peter Gurney and the Guinea Lynx health pages. There are a lot of great tips on there and also pictures. It might help you to identify what the condition is. Alcester pigs is the most knowledgable on these matters. Dont know if shes online at the moment though. You could try sending her a PM.

Ive had a quick look at the Guinea Lynx health pages and Nizoral is a recommended shampoo for ringworm, however the information suggests that anti fungal cream is also required. Shampoo on its own will probably not suffice if it is ringworm.

where can i get an anti fungal cream? Just in case? The patch itself isnt exactly a circle..... this is all so confusing - thanks for all your help!

The shampoo is Nizoral not Nirolex! Sorry, getting mixed up with a cough mixture!

NIZORAL SHAMPOO TO CLARIFY

CW, how is your pig with the dental problem?

Nizoral is usually sufficient by itself, provided it is used correctly.

Hi alcester pigs, sorry I lost your number, so I couldnt ring you back! Her teeth are fine, this is slightly embarresing but i think she was getting a wet chin from the tomato and pepper as she only has a wet chin when eating these!
Oh and I have changed them all from lettuce to spring greens :)

Thank you, I will get some nizoral shampoo tomorow and some caneston cream. How often should I shampoo them all? and how long should I continue the treatment?

So glad AP was online. With my piggy, I shampooed the Nizoral on and left it for five minutes, I then rinsed it off. The relief to my piggy was obvious, however, I applied a small amount of the shampoo onto the infected area 3 days after the first application as it was still slightly inflammed but obviously healing. The redness and itching subsided and the hair started to grow back. I really hope this works for your piggie.

Fine on "dental" problem!
The secret with all of these shampoos/skin treatments is to leave them on long enough, usually three minutes minimum upto five minutes. Don't guess the time, look at a clock, if you estimate the time you'll probably find that less than a minute has elapsed. Opinions vary but try three shampoo sessions at 4 day intervals initially.
Finish the session with a conditioner.
You can use either Daktarin Oral Gel or Daktarin Gold ointment on ringworm, little but often over 7-10 days.

me too, thank you Farquhar and AP. Because she was scratching so much before with the mites, I havent really noticed her scratching as much with this. Hopefully I can make her more comfy now tomorow. Ill bathe them all in it. then it looks like another massive scrub down with their cage and their toys....

what about the open wound? will that have healed enough to treat her by tomorow? It basically looks like a red raw patch where she has either bitten or scratched the top of the skin off...

Check all of your pigs for bumblefoot, fungal problems can be a predisposing factor.
You could put some Bepanthen ointment over the raw patch before applying the shampoo.

Their feet are fine thank goodness!
Bepanthen? Is that nappy cream?
one more thing - you said finish the session with a conditioner - what kind of conditioner? and do you mean when all of the treatment is finished or after each shampoo?

Instead of bepanthem could I use vaseline ? its slightly scabbed over today but not completely. Vaseline would work as a waterproof layer when I'm shapooing them...
