Hi

My guinea pig Honey was put to sleep on Monday 25th May 2026. I want to share this so I can help someone else and perhaps seek some closure

I noticed she started losing weight this year but she was still eating so I took her to the vet. They said they would have to do scans. They did an ultrasound and found she had ovarian cysts. I booked her on for a spay this month and fed her critical care to bulk her up

She had her spay and she recovered well. She was eating and she was fine. She was still losing weight so I continued the critical care. I took her to the vet because she wasn’t eating and they gave her a stimulant for her stomach and pain relief. This worked and she started eating again

Fast forward a week. I took her outside and noticed she had diarrhoea and I looked at her stitches and saw it was infected with pus coming out. I took her to the out of hours vet. The vet gave me antibiotics and pain relief. She wasn’t eating and I was still giving her critical care. I took her again to the vet so she could get something to stimulate her stomach so she could build her strength up. They gave her fluid and stomach stimulant

The next day she was limp and she had started having seizures. I took her to the vets and they gave her fluids and pain relief. I was watching her deteriorate so I took her to the vets again. They said they could not do anything and it was time. So they put her to sleep

This was horrendous even though I know this was the right thing to do but it does not help. We have buried her in the garden where she used to eat. I have 3 others but I am really struggling with her death

I got her from pets at home. I know this isn’t the best place to get pets from now. Bo one wanted her because of her pink eyes but I loved her regardless

So sorry for your loss.
Every guinea pig deserves a loving home, no matter where they come from.
No one else wanted Honey but you gave her a loving home.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

I'm so sorry forr our loss .She was such a pretty girl and reminds me of my first guinea pig..RIP beautiful Honey.

I’m so sorry you had to let Honey go to the Rainbow Bridge. Sending you hugs. You did everything you could for her. Sometimes it’s just not enough. ❤️

She was gorgeous. I love piggies with red eyes. I lost my boy Percy after bladder stone surgery. He was only 2.5 years. If we could save them with love no piggy would ever leave us. Take care. ❤️

PS I changed the title

Honey was a very beautiful piggy. I love pink eyes ❤️ She looks so beautiful in the garden amongst the dandelion. She obviously had a very happy life with you and her piggy sisters. Sleep softly over the bridge little Honey 🌈

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry about your loss from a post-op infection, which commonly make an appearance about 10 days into recovery. Not your fault and you have done all the right things. But I am very sorry about the traumatic circumstances. The hot weather will of course not have helped at all. :(

You don't have to be apologetic about where you get piggies from that struggle to find a home. Most piggies in rescue originate from pet shops, sadly.

I love ruby-eyed piggies and have had a succession of them. My Hafina 'Summer' was another golden sausage (who come naturally with ruby eyes) who was stuck in rescue and now I have my mostly ginger Millyn 'Sweet Violet' with pink eyes plus my old lilac tricolour Macsen as my last ruby-eyed piggies.
