Hi everyone, as you will all know I have 3 guinea pigs. Pebbles, Pringles and Porche. I got Pebbles and Pringles together in November 2010, and Porche a few months later from my auntie. I thought I would share the story of how I came to get her to you.

So, my auntie was on holiday and left her children (my cousins) in charge of the guinea pigs. My auntie didn't care about them. One day, my cousin called us asking if we wanted a guinea pig.. We had no idea of her background, nor were we aware that she desperately needed a home, so we declined. I thought about it for a few days and then managed to convince my mum to phone my cousin back and enquire about this guinea pig she had.

To cut a long story short, my cousin explained that Porche's sister had died and was left in the cage with her for A WEEK before anyone bothered to remove her. She was never cleaned out, was fed scraps of muesli if she was lucky, and never had hay and water. Apparently was mostly fed off pineapple and other fruit scraps. My cousin said she is lucky to be alive because 'nobody looks after her'

We were disgusted by this so immediately accepted the offer to bring her home. She has been here around 3 years now, and I have honestly never met such a laid back, loving, soft little piggie. She doesn't have a bad bone in her little body, she lets you do anything with her.. Soo cuddly, never runs away, never bitten and doesn't scratch, and will happily sit with you for hours. I don't understand how anyone could neglect her, she is absolutely no trouble at all.. a happy little nature, wheeks at the slightest little things and loves being out in the fresh air and grass more than anything - something she never got to do before coming here. She is also very beautiful!

Every time I think of how she was treated I get so upset. My auntie and cousins were so cruel to her, and they don't even feel bad about it. They have been my house numerous times and never ask to see her.. And never ask about her. I got one comment from my cousin, once again stating that nobody cared for her and she can't believe she is still alive. I have tried to make a trio with my other 2 numerous times, but a fight always breaks out between Porche and Pebbles. I know this is unusual for females, but Porche just doesn't want company. It's understandable I suppose, but she has me :)

Here is the little girl herself.. As long as she lives here she will always be clean, well fed, watered, have lots of toys and all of the love I can give. I am so happy I got to change her life around! I just hope she doesn't remember her past. When she first came to us she was quite mal-nourished, nervous, her coat was awful and her nails were overgrown.. I have nurtured her into a lovely, shiny coated, tame and conifdent piggie :)

Beautiful story of how love and kindness is returned 10 fold... x

Awww porche is gorgeous! I can't believe your auntie and cousins could leave a gorgeous piggy without any love care or supplies. Well done on taking her! I bet she's having a great life with u! I can't believe they left her in the cage with her dead sister for a week! Rip little piggie!
Well done on giving her a good life!

A sad tale with a happy ending :( I feel too many people get a little pet and it's all "awww how cute" for a while then the novelty wears off, and the poor animal is ignored from there.

She is absolutely beautiful and it is clear as day from your photos that you have done a wonderful job with her so it just goes to show that there are decent kind people out there. Well done x

I agree! People buy pets for their children and don't realise what they have done. They need to provide their pet with love, care, food, water, toys, exercise, a warm home, clean bedding etc. many people think small animals are easy to care for but they aren't! Well done Leah Hun x

Totally agree with what you have said Perfectpets11. I joined several FB pages for pets and the amount of bunnies, cats, guinea pigs etc at x amount of months old with "have to sadly sell as don't have the time for her/him". Well why get them in the first place?! They're not a bloody toy! x

People buy pets as a way to entertain their young children when really the kids would just love a barbie doll or an action man! Lol

lol that I can relate to. However in my case I bought guinea pigs as a distraction AWAY from the young children ;)

Haha! I don't blame u!
Pets don't scream (unless u have a very impatient piggie waiting for their veggies) lol
Pets don't speak back to u ( unless they want your attention and they nip u and squeak a bit)
Children do those things...

What a terrible story. I am so upset for her. I cannot believe they left her with her dead friend for a whole week. Thank goodness she is with you now. She is just so beautiful.

What a beautiful girl. How dare people treat an animal so badly it just makes my blood boil unfortunately some people will spend longer deciding on what they will have for their tea than they would deciding if they can really take care of an animal before they buy it. Our cousin Amelia was neglected and ignored for years by a family member and she to is loving and layed back

Thank you so much everyone, your comments are lovely! These weren't young children though, all over the age of 19. They should of known better but unfortunately they don't care. A lot of animals have suffered in their care.. from ducks, rabbits, dogs, a parrot and even a monkey...

I am so glad I got Porche in time as I know for a fact she wouldn't be here today if not! She is a little angel. It is sad to know that people don't care :(

People like that need to be stopped from keeping pets :hb:
Makes me so mad that they KNOW they can't be bothered to keep them and look after them, yet get more anyway! And at that age they should bloody well know better, even if they are immature enough to NOT know any better (which I doubt) then the blame falls on their mother.
Sorry to rant, I just hate to hear of situations like this. If they are stupid enough to get anymore pets in future, I'd be giving the RSPCA a little tip off

After my rant I kept seeing this post on fb of a woman moving away and having to rehome her hamster. folk kept letting her down and now shes in a panic as she moves Sunday...
So I take pity as I do, and go get the wee thing. And omg I could cry :( It is in a 30x20 CM cage, with rusty bars and it looks huge. So went to put it in a bigger cage and it goes mad when I pick it up and tries to squeak but comes out with this WEIRD noise! Sounds like it has some form of respiratory infection.
I'm so bloody angry :( WHY do people allow their animals to "live" like this?!

Oh that was so lovely (the part about her second chance at life) thank you for sharing your story. Her coat looks in fantastic condition well done for giving her that second chance at life and to know you have saved her and got her happy and heathy must be a great feeling. She's very cute, fab pics too.

Why do people treat animals like that it's just so wrong, a pet should never brought just because it looks cute or someone jumped into getting one without much if any thought about the commitment involved it's so sad that pets are left neglected :(

Thank you everyone! She is out in her run as we speak, I've just looked out of the back door and she is sat in the middle in her own little world munching away until her hearts content! It's lovely to know she is safe and cared for now.

What a sad story about that little hamster, I hope you can get him some meds and get him better! People are so clueless with pets. Either that, or they just can't be bothered.

I agree with you all, my cousins were all over the age of 19 at the time so had absolutely no excuse. A few of them worked so had the opportunity to go and buy her food, hay and bedding.. and as for little water and a deceased guinea pig being left in the cage.. beggars belief!

Thankfully they only have a cat now, and they are quite independent so he looks after himself and is in good condition. Oh, and they have an English bull terrier. They bred their old dogs for money :(

Aww she looks so adorable and happy! So glad to hear that you were her saviour and she wasn't left to rot. I'm sorry to say but they must not be very nice people if they can basically torture a poor animal like that.

When I lived in Barcelona, my friend lived in a house where they had a big white rabbit in a cage barely 30x50cm with no bedding, only the wire on the bottom to stand on. There was nothing else in the cage, no stimulation, they never picked it up, let it out or even talked to it, it was left in the laundry room with the washing machine on all the time and the only thing they did was give it food and water, like it was a 10 second chore they had to do. I felt really sorry for the poor thing and every time I was there I would go to the cage and talk to it and say goodbye to it when I left. My friend told me that the rabbit was probably catatonic due to how it had been treated. I don't know what happened to it but I really hope that it died soon after so could be free from that prison as I'm sure it suffered from terrible arthritis and it's poor paws were probably so painful from standing on wire all the time; as well as being driven insane being stuck in a cage with a bright fluorescent light on and no space to run or nowhere to hide. Unfortunately, I'm sure there are plenty of poor animals that this is happening to, perhaps if a licence was needed to own a pet people would be more answerable and this kind of thing would diminish significantly.

Oh what a shocking story. Leaveing her dead friend in the cage was absolutely sick
@LB14 you could ask @Bekki for advice on hamster behaviour, she is very knowledgeable.

:) The hamster has quietened down. With a proper large cage and lots of exercise in her ball she seems to be thriving thankfully. :)

What a beautiful shiny guinea, so healthy, well done:love:

Thank you all! I have only just seen the rest of the comments. Unfortunately Porche's UTI has returned (well this is what I suspect) so we're off to the vet tomorrow morning along with the other 2. I am also going to mention the white specks I have seen on their fur. Other than that she and then others are still doing well :)

So many animals have suffered in their care, I agree that they aren't nice people to be neglecting animals. Luckily Porche is with me now, but some others weren't so lucky as I mentioned in an above comment. And I forgot to mention that they left a goldfish in BLACK water.
