How Long Does It Take You....?

I have 2 boars in a 2x4 cage and since my first boar refused hay racks, a hay bag, and would refuse any hay on the floor of the cage after he'd gone on it my two now eat hay out of a second bowl (much larger than the Guinea pig food bowls of course since they need unlimited hay). This means to change food water hay it takes me about 5 minutes and another 5 to spot clean. I wish they would use a rack or bag though! It would give them so much more floor space
Lol....piggies can be soooo fussy! Good you found a way they can eat it tho! If I put a bowl of hay into my cages I know they would just sit in it....they even climb into the hay bags just so they can sit on top of some hay lol X

I've got two girls who go out on the grass during the day in summer, they have a hut on the grass that i clean twice a week, taking about ten minutes, they have a 6ft hutch that fleece needs swept and food water hay done taking about 5/10 minutes every day. Grass takes care of itself and when i move run it takes 5 mins. in winter they are in the shed and it takes 15 mins in morning and 15 mins at night to sort them out sometimes longer. Dont think you are too slow!

That was the issue with my hay bag! He turned it into a toilet bag essentially! As for the rack, I don't think it was a very good one (mom bought it for me trying to help out) and he just couldn't seem to get any hay that wasn't sticking out and poking him in the nose essentially. So bowls it is! I rarely find stray poos in the hay bowls. Mostly they just shove their little faces full of hay and spread it around the cage but at least I know the majority of it is being eaten and not used as litter!

Every morning it takes me roughly 40 mins and that's just new water, food, hay, clean out hay boxes, hoover cages, and change pee pads. I have two 2x9 stacked c&c cages. All the utube videos I watch people seem to have the cages all done in a matter of 5-10 mins! Am I just super slow or something? Lol. The 40 mins is from me going in until everything is done and back in its place again. That's not including changing liners etc, on these days it's about 1 hour probably in total. What size is your cage and how long does it take you? X

wow, I love your set up! How may piggies do you have?

This is my girls setup:-

Every morning and evening I clean out their boxes, brush off the vetbed, wash it if necessary, change the hay and puppy pads.

I then change any wee'd on puppy pads in the run, sweep up hay/poops. Feed them, change the water and give Tilly her med's (which she has 3 times per day).

Takes me about 30 minutes.

I'm so glad I asked my question! Glad I'm not alone in the time it takes....I though I was maybe just really slow at everything I do. In one particular video I watch 3 cages have fleece changed over in around 5-10 mins....although I suppose thinking about it she didn't clean the base of the cages or top up hay/food/water, and doesn't have hay boxes to clean out. I don't mind spending the time doing it tho, I find it pretty relaxing!? Lol. Mine love the dustpan and brush too ....a few of them even like the Hoover! ☺️ X

"You are not alone, cus I am here with you" just reminded me of a MJ song :D glad mine aren't the only dustpan chasers And yeah Ted loves the Hoover too what happened to hating loud noises :))

2 sows in a 7x4 c and c cage with a 4x1 loft. They've got 4 hay boxes each and 3 other hide houses with hay in them and 4 water bottles and 3 hay bowls. I change their hay twice a day and poo pick and sweep throughout the day. I spend 40 minutes in the morning and the same at night. If it's a full fleece change and cage clean then it's about 2 hours .. it's exhausting work

Wow your girlies are lucky to have all of that! :D
4 hay boxes each eekk I thought 2 each was bad :D

Awe...what's wrong with Tilly? X

Does hay get stuck in the vacuum? I have a dyson, which is a great but I am afraid it will get stuck and break it. My piggies like to drag their hay everywhere even when I put it in a box. ;)

I was donated my Mum's Dyson, which was probably already 5+ years old. I've had it for 5 years now and it still works. On a few occasions hay gets stuck in it (it has to be a big clump of it), but it's easy to take the pipe off and get it out.

I do have a sweeping brush at hand that I use to sweep up the big bit before vacuuming.

Awe poor Tilly :(. Does she take her meds easy? X

Not too bad at all, luckily!

She has really been through it since we got her 2 years ago. She has Osteoporosis, had to be spayed last month due to 2 massive cysts and now the bladder issues, which maybe linked to the spay.

Still, she is a happy girlie so it's all worthwhile :)

Thanks for asking about her x

Awe wee woman! As long as she's happy that's all that matters :).....and she obviously has a fabulous caring mummy X

:D I have three pairs of girls each in a 4 X 5 C and C cage and two single girls each in a 3 x 4 cage. Twice a day I do a poop sweep , fill up hay racks, top up pellets and change water bottles. That on its own can take about 45 minutes. Changing the fleece and towels in one cage will take another 20 minutes. I change fleeces one cage at a time over a few weeks, or a pile of washing builds up.

Wow! Where on earth do u keep all those cages? More very lucky piggies :) x

Do you use fleece or disposable bedding? I'm a bit worried about winter too as I take all my fleece stuff outside for a good shake before washing and then I need to dry it all! I think some may end up in the tumble drier as I'll need my radiators to heat the house! Lol X
I use fleece I shake it off outside and dry in dryer after. They do shrink a bit!

We seem to be the slow ones Laura. I paid more attention this morning if I just do everything ignoring pigs it was done in 15 mins. But how can you do that?

It's impossible! Lol. I decided to bath a couple of the piggies today (I cleaned the boys grease glands with virgin coconut oil so they were all oily)....a couple turned into 9....thankfully I had 2 little helpers :). All piggies were very well behaved ☺️. What is it about pigs that make you love them so much? Lol X

I really need to cut nails and have been putting it off I have only done it once to one pig since we got them and it took all day a couple at a time and was a disaster! I don't know what I am going to do. The pigs are just soooo cute and fun to watch with their zoomies and popcorns. I also love how sweet they are when the snuggle in for a hold or lap time (even if it is just a minute)

I have a lot of nails to cut and do them usually every month....makes it easier when u just need to snip the ends....especially with black nailed ones! What did u use to cut them? I have one pigs who hates it...and he has black nails with curled toes just to make things harder lol. I wrap him in a pillowcase and just have one little foot poking out at a time. Seems to calm him a little and stops him squirming away. Usually by the time I do 1-2 feet like this he just chills and let's me do the rest :). All my other piggies just sit and let me do it thankfully. The more often you do it the more they get used to it so it's not as scary for them X

What about you?
I don't really know. I also have 2 dogs who I dote on....but there is just something special about the pigs! I quess I kinda like the fact that you have to gain their trust, and the more time goes on the more trusting they become....makes you feel a little special lol. Plus they all have completely different personalities, and watching them all interact is great. I usually go in at night before bed just to check on them and end up sitting watching them for ages lol X

It takes me roughly half hour a day to spot clean and fill up bows etc, followed by another half hour of floor time/ hand feeding time, I deep clean them every 2-3 days and that can take me upto an hour and a half. They currently have a 1.44cmx96cm Cot converted into a cage.
Piggies don't know how lucky they really are.

Do you have any pics of your converted cot? I'm planning on making a new cage for the two possibly new ones and thinking of doing a wooden one this time instead of c&c X

I will post some pictures of it today for you, I previously had the C&C cages, there great but not the most attractive thing to have in your living room.
A.x
