posts on here from people breeding their guinea pigs intentionally and then asking for advice or going into a panic because they dont know what to do....even the basic stuff :( :( :(

Why are they putting their guineas through this? After my own share of stupid mistakes, I just cant understand how you can intentionally do this to a cavy while being seemingly blindfolded :'( I want to be helpful, I really do, and I dont want to start arguements or say any of this stuff on threads...but I find it so hard as it makes me so sad to read these threads, other people must feel the same surely? :-\

I know this is a place to learn, but increasingly there are people joining to tell us 'Ive got my guinea pregnant, now what do I do' if you want to breed, at least do your research beforehand >:(

Rant over ::) ;D

I sympathise with you as many of my resecues are the result of novice breeders who think they can make money quickly!
Its amazing how many people think piggies only have one baby which the mum can live with so they dont need more cages etc etc

It is frustrating but sadly its always going to happen, so all we can do is educate where ever and when ever we can- at least if people do come here for advice they can learn alot and we can sleep knowing that the guineas out there are getting better treated with the knowledge their owners have gained.

I use to get so cross but our energies are better used at educating and helping as getting p'd off doesnt help the piggies it just stops people asking for help and advice

But I do know where your coming from, trust me!

thats a better of thinking then ranting, too often ranting scares off the exact people who need our help, and some innocents get caught up in an argument which is not wanted or not nice, I have bred my pigs on the very odd occcasion but keep every single pig the last births were henry from a mum I rescued 2 weeks before he was born and 2 little girls who I waited over 2 years to get the right match for mum and dad for so I think you can safely say I'm not a novice breeder , and do understand what you mean about novice breeders who are nieve in their ideas about breeding pigs , as long as they have a good home and medical care and a good clean home then we cannot really moan about it , its the ones who dont have homes for them or have not given it much thought that need our help in realising whats wrong about breeding for cash,

I agree hun and thats how ive been feeling too a bit lately,i feel sorry for the poor piggies :'( :'( :'(

well you know what i feel about breeding,I am still waiting for the never ending births of the large group i took in to come to an end .
I definatly wont be having any minis off my own piggies as i am on baby overdose right now :o

I have nothing against show breeders like the majority of you, but likewise PP, I don't agree with those who put a boar and sow together and quite frankly have no idea in what they are doing, that is just plain irresponsible imo, and I ask person, why? Why is their an urge to breed before some even have basic piggie knowledge?

then they struggle to find homes for them when theres hundreds out there looking for homes already :'( :'(

To be honest I was just thinking that when I read the pregnancy board. New members need to start reading the rules, don't mind giving advice, not that I have any experience in that area but don't need to hear about how many pregnancies their pigs have had and things like that.

mmm i know :(

I've been thinking the exact same thing....there have been a lot of 'accidental' pregnancies on here lately. Do people not realise that male + female = babies?

As much as I'd love to experience watching baby guineas grow up, I'm wise enough to resist!

I have that same mentality, I'd love mini pigs but then I think of all those rescue pigs and the risk to the sow. Maybe at some point in the future I'll look for a pregnant foster (once I've worked on the OH for a while) but even then all the stress, it's a big deal, after reading accidental experiences on here, I don't think I'd sleep for 72 days!

as has been said above - I just think its sad that there are so many piggies looking for caring homes out there, and people feel the need to make more? Yes babies are very cute and I'm sure its amazing watching them come into the world - but there are so many piggies already in this world that deserve a better life and a loving home :'( :'(

Makes me very very sad :'( :'(

>:( I also noticed the increase of "is she pregnant" yes there are the few "mistakes" but people should be a little, shall i say paranoid that it will happen! My Boris didn't met the girls till 5weeks after his little op! There are so MANY guinea pigs that need homes! :o

Yep i agree, I bought a piggy from the pet shop (dixie) who turned out to be pregnant i always tell her she was lucky to come to me, there are so many people who dont know what they are doing and think oh i know lets make them have babies for the fun of it..they dont realise how much stress it puts the sow under, complications that can arise, still-borns, weak babies, orphaned babies etc I had no experience before that with a pregnant pig and I turned to members on another forum for help and they helped me a lot, I kept all the bubs because I couldnt stand the thought of anyone else looking after them just incase they didnt treat them right, but a lot of people are left with bubs to re-home and its not fair when there are so many in rescue's already.

hmm i noticed the is she preg increasing :'(

I think a lot of people say 'oh its a mistake' in their subject box to test the water...but it seems 80% of the time, when the person explains the story its not a mistake at all :(  :(

I have nothing against show breeders like the majority of you
I reaally dont have anything against people that breed for show, I really dont, there is actually a point to that, I can understand it! but I dont get why people mate two guineas that are exactly the same as ones that are already looking for homes will no real objective besides having the babies ::)

People that are experienced and have maybe a litter every couple of years from 'special' pigs, either looks of personality I do understand, and no offence to anyone..but if the parents arent anything different to every single pet shop pig out there...whats the point?

Even if people knew what the were doing it makes it that much better....but putting two opposite sex animals together and thinking 'what next' is just so dumb imo :-\ :(

If people are breeding on purpose, at least read a few posts which clearly show which kind of a forum this is, and spare us the ugly details >:(

It also seems to be a few young kids...which leaves me to think....where are the parents?

prob the parents dont care as usual hun :( :'(

I have to agree with a lot of what has been said I only joined a few months back and there seemed to be a strong emphesis on rescue not breeding but lately it has been the other way around but people are not admitting that the pregnancys were planned! I think it is time to go back over the rules and people need to make sure they read them!

There does seem an increasing number of these posts lately and often by what seem very young people (no offence meant).

We still need to advise them properly rather than shouting them down, It's people like you lot (what I consider experts LOL) that can get the message through to them about the unnecessary risks of breeding when there are so many waiting out there for new homes.

There are the odd obvious 'real' accidents ( I've been there and ended up with 5 babies) Through the vet mis sexing my Fudgey. Too be quite honest I felt sick when I saw 10 little beady eyes looking at me one morning and realised what I had put bugsy through.

Your all doing a great job with your advice PLEASE keep on doing it even though you are getting Peed off.

Tracy

I hope none of you are including me about the whole 'is she pregnant' not being an accident.
I disagree with people breeding ANY animals for ANY reason. Its completely cruel and selfish on the humans part. Yes, in nature animals breed, and if people didnt breed we wouldnt have pets etc. I feel even more strongly about it since seeing what Nala's going through, I would never ever have even THOUGHT about breeding any of my pets, shes looking so depressed and fed up and I just wish she didnt have to go through with it :(

nope hun we're not

Thank you, just worried as I too had noticed the sudden influx of pregnancies and I hate the fact that I'm one of them...lets hope the rest are also genuine accidents!

No debs...I was going to use you as an example of what the pregnancy part of the forum is supposed to be for, but then i thought I was getting too personal ;D

If anything, you keeping a sow that was probably, if not definatly pregnant is something to be admired, you would be suprised how many people would have handed her back to save the trouble! You are a brilliant piggie mum!

Yeah my Dad said take her back to the shop when I told him she was pregnant 98) 98) 98)
Its so crazy that so many people do it!
I wouldnt of minded you using me as an example :)

I am not picking on anyone as I cant even remember whos who and whos piggies are whos and so on lol I just know that recently there seems to be a lot more talk about piggies that are up the duff! ;)

Squeaks on the pill so she's safe :D

Too many babies are going to be coming into this work within the next 6weeks or so!
All those poor piggies in rescue :( Yes..I bought my 3 from a pet shop which I know is very bad, but with no transport it was the easiest way to do it :(
Any babies Nala have will either be kept (providing she doesnt have more than about 3) or rehomed to experienced piggie people who know about the rescue/breeding thing.

in over 30 years I think I have had about a birth every 3 to 5 years some were rescues already pregnant, one weekend I had 9 babies born to 2 mums all kept and only fudge is still with me so I am prepared to keep every single pig thats born here I have no rescues near to me ( although another girl from where i live did say she got one from a rescue not sure if it was here ) so in keeping pigs I need to source them either pet shops ( Occasionally ) or from a much loved healthy good natured pig of my own, which I will do, marley had 2 girls this year she had a few vet checks to make sure of things being ok she came with my others needing treatment ( for a freebie check over)
she gave birth to 2 wonderful little sows and they are very precious to me she then had an after birth check up and was fine apart from thinning fur which has long ago cleared up she now lives with her daughters all very content in the herd , if anyone can find fault in that then thats your opinion , but none of my sows have ever had more then one birth and are all very healthy, none of them were taken any risks with ( as if)
I do agree there does seem to be a lot of accidental pregnancys lately maybe some need to know the birds and the bees and what happens if male meets female my 11 year old daughter knows what happens if she only smells of a sow then cuddles a boy, and why they act like they do, I'm also not totally against breeding the odd one for a show as i feel they are so well looked after anyway, never in a million years the amounts I have heard of though I'm talking up to 20 to 30 and NEVER EVER for cash
