I Am Losing All Faith In Humans

My 6 year old daughter can even tell that a 80cm is too small! we have a cage in our local pet shop that's a 80cm saying its for two piggies it comes with hay, bottle, shavings and a bowl so clearly aimed at a new Guinea pig owner...that's starting them off on the wrong advice from the start! My little girl said (before I said a word) ....mum that's not big enough for two guinea pigs is it :(

How do we go about that then? All ask watchdog and send them letters or do one for the community?

my 2 piggies were kept in an hamster size cage for 3 years before i got them well in fact they told me they were 3 years old but i have recently boarded them when i went on holiday and the people have had guinea pigs all their lives and they reckon they are in fact more like 6 years old so i am pretty shocked to say the least.

I have one of those cages but I only have one guinea-pig in it, no way would I put three in! I hate Dusty being in it but he's not very well, he's completely slowed down with old age and is really feeling his 5 years and 2 months. I can't imagine putting young, healthy animals in a cage that small. I know that I'm probably doing wrong in housing Dusty in a cage that small but, as I said, he's not doing good at the minute... I'm scared he's gonna die... :'(

It is perfectly fine as a hospital cage for a single piggy! I used one myself for exactly that purpose before the bottom was turned into a hay tray.

The cage is definitely not adequate for anything else when it comes to piggies. :(

Oh my word a hamster cage! Shocking. Glad you have given them a loving home :)

I've just left a feed back asking for this pets at home review to be removed, and I also said they should not be selling 80cm cages for guineas and rabbits! Grrrr :)

So basically need some people to go to P@H enquire about the cages, take photos and report back on the advice given -atleast then you can name good and bad stores, then again they all stock that stuff... -.- and how they obtained that advice (supposedly the RSPCA) definitely going next saturday, so I'll do some digging, even ask the vet what she thinks!

That review seems to be too stupid to be true - is it a prank of some kind?
A stupid one if it is, hay Stewart :( as new piggy owners on a budget may think it's fine for housing their new piggies in that cage after reading a review. I see it on gum tree all the time, images of piggies in awful small bare hutches or in small cages like this one soooo wrong.
Kell.

How awful. I saw a tiny little hutch/cottage kind of thing yesterday, it was £110 at p@h, barely enough room to turn around for a rabbit or guinea pig.

I know what one you mean, it's a shame because it's adorable but only suitable as part of a larger setup :/ I don't understand why they put effort into making something nice but then too small?!

They market it for '2 juvenile guinea pigs' which is sad because younger guinea pigs run/popcorn more and they won't have the space to do so and if it's housing 2 boys when they reach a few months it could be disastrous for their bond :( If they really have to sell it they should market as a hospital/travel cage. I think we need to spread it around the guinea pig/small animal community, I've seen that pressure force shops to take things off the shelves before.

Pets at home cater for the general public, kids with pester power, who throw tantrums to get what they want. The general public who go there expecting good advice are getting the wrong information. I Have a very good relationship with Kennel Gate, but, I feel some of their cages are small, but, they are not advertised for one, two or what ever animal, but what the manufacture say, like indoor bunny cage. Treacle and fudge will need a larger cage soon. But, I will extent it, so I will get what I want. Cue cable ties!
Sadly from previous experiences with horses and cats, I have very little respect for the RSPCA.

I've enquired with the RSPCA on several things over the years and maybe they are not all the same but I genuinely find them appalling, but that's my experience!

It is sad but true. The RSPCA do not meet my expectations. I found a little she cat, abandoned it a ditch on a Saturday afternoon. Let's just say, out of the two organisations I contacted for advice, only one responded. It was not the RSPCA. Cats protection league were fantastic. That little she cat is now the boss of this house, keeping me, two dogs and another cat in order! image.webp

They basically left a fox cub to die on one occasion, another occasion with an injured animal they told us to ring another organisation that were over 2.5 hours away.

If pets at home won't take the review down, an option could be to all write a quick review giving it 1 star with a comment stating that it's too small? At least then new owners would know that what this person is doing not acceptable?

To be fair to p@h they have stated in the description:
A guinea pig should never permanently be kept in its cage and should be let out in a suitable run for exercise.

Indoor cages are only suitable as temporary homes.

This person has just completely ignored that.

(Just to note: I'm a NOT a fan of pets at home)

It only looked worth £20 at that size. Nevermind £110. Pfft.

Pets at home call this a cavy cage any bigger than this and it's called a rabbit cage so anyone buying a guinea pig would get this cage because it advises it's for two guinea pigs. So if the 80cm cage is for 2 then the 100 for 3 and the 120 for 4.

Remember the cage is only advised for 2 and the RSPCA only advises 120 for 2 so basically it's advice and not the law. Which means 80cm and 100cm or even smaller I have seen cavie 60 cages for sale are all legal

When reading the other reviews this one is not the worst one owner reccomends 4 guinea pigs or a breeding cage.

Comments about Cavie 80 Guinea Pig Cage:

The cage is great for my 4 newborn baby guinea pigs and there mum as it's good for keeping them indoors away from the cold but it's ok when there small but won't be any good in a few weeks when they get any bigger but the cage is good for breeding animals or transporting them as the bar gaps are the perfect size as my baby's were the same size as a Chinese hamster.

I've just submitted a review an it says it will block it if it contains any reference or pricing to any other retailer; but they clearly don't mind a bit of animal neglect!

Here is the cavie 60 cage marketed towards rabbits

Just to add I think the review said they get let out to play in the room so nothing againts pets at home rules

That's really horrible, imagine keeping a rabbit in that  It's sad that there isn't more rules in place to stop this kind of thing. Not even pets at home would say it's ok to keep 3 in that cage though.

It is not a case of them being legal or not. It is a case of minimum standards for housing each animals. You can buy what ever you like. But, it is being miss informed about how much space animals need for well being. Not everyone will research. They will just got to the shop and ask, and get told what ever they are marketed as.
