@ayemee We had one problem with them, that is when we took our sow in with a bloated tummy, she was never diagnosed properly, I found out after having her pts that it could have been ovarian cysts or a UTI. Like I said though, that vet isn't there any more.

Oh right I see. I think good piggy vets are hard to find in the Nottingham area. :(

Have you got good recommendations for the Vets4Pets one in Mapperly then?

I live about 5 minute drive away from there so that would be handy.
I hope they can help me, i know i won't sleep tonight now ! Thank god i posted my worries on here so if she does have something, i can get it sorted for her.. x

Yeah fingers crossed for you :) I'm sure she will be sorted in no time.

Yeah they are fine there, we took a guinea we have at the moment there today. Well my son took him. They've treated our guinea's for URI's, ear infections, conjunctivitis, lice/mites and whatever else needs looking at lol.

Well, that was an experience... I felt so sorry for my poor little Gladys ... The vet says she believes it is ringworm, she has given me Mycozole spray and took some samples for a culture.. That was the worse thing to see as she pulled hair out of Gladys and she squealed :(
then a bill of £115... which is a lot but I want whats right for Gladys to get better.. x
and i cried cos i felt like she wasn't holding Gladys in a proper way at first, she looked like she had her too tight so i asked her not to hold her so tight and she said it was the safest way.. the second time she was a bit gentler... gosh, this is hard :(

If it was Elizabeth, my son said she did that with ours but he seemed fine with it, he just said "yeah course she does", I guess it to stop them from jumping out of her hands and hurting themselves.

£115.. That sounds reasonable to me, but I've never taken a piggie for ringworm or anything. It cost us £36 yesterday for a check up and meds.

Try not to stress too much, give your piggies some cuddles and snuggles :)

Aw I feel for you, and Gladys. It is hard... I know I always wish I could explain to the piggies why they are having to make journies to a place where uncomfortable things happen. Not nice for them, but they soon recover x I hope your wallet recovers soon too - that's never nice either!

When Sunrise had a case of mites it wasn't clear whether it was mites or fungal, but it LOOKED like mites. The vet took a hair sample, with skin (dandruff) attached and looked through the microscope. Found nothing, but gave her a course of injections for the mites. She needed two visits for this (she didn't need her third injection) and the entire thing cost around £70. It did indeed turn out to be mites.

Vets vary in cost greatly. I use another vet who is brilliant at some things and great at surgery, very skilled, but I'm not always confident in his diagnosis... but he is very cheap. I find it good to go to him for some things, but pay more and go elsewhere for others....

The charge does sound a bit over the top to me, but I could be wrong.

It depends, was it for two guinea's or just one? The spray on the net is around £20, the consultation fee's are £23, I have no idea about the sample part. If you feel it was expensive then the best thing to do is call or ask on Facebook, Candy is very nice. Also you could tell her you feel that your guinea was being held too tightly and that it upset you, they may apologise.

You should have gotten a receipt with the breakdown of the costs, go through and have a look on google to see if you can get a price of what it usually costs. Some are very expensive where as some are very cheap. I find that vets all cost roughly the same price in regards to consultations.

This is the problem in Nottingham, we need an exotic vet.

I'm really sorry that the experience has upset you. Make sure you contact them and tell them you aren't happy.

thanks guys.. i guess i was a bit upset as its the first time I've ever been to a vets - i suppose it compares to the first time you take a baby for their jabs ! they need it but not nice.. the vet was ok after i voiced my concern about holding her too tight, she was called Erika. I did get upset and she did ask if i was ok and said i obviously care about being a good owner .. The consolation price was £23, the culture was £50 and the spray was £42! That was just for one piggie, she said if it was co

Omg! Ouch!! I don't know if that's the normal price, someone else might be able to confirm it for you. Have you checked google for the spray?

its £19.93 on Amazon.. so they doubled the price.. i asked about their hutch and she just said keep things to a minimum - they don't have much in there apart from tubes and food ! the link says to clean etc and remove things, should i do this ? Its so confusing...

I see. The consultation price is quite reasonable. I didn't realised that she had actually taken a sample to take a culture of it, I had assumed she has looked at it under microscope. I do not know how much the spray costs.

I have a bottle of Hibiscrub. I bought it just in case Sunrise's mite attack turned out to be fungal. I intend to use it at the first sight of anything that could be fungal, it's got a reputation for being effective and it is piggy (and human) safe. It could be worth treating your other pigs at the very first sign that they have caught it (if they catch it), and it may well clear it up very nicely and quickly without having to go back to the vet.

I am not recommending self-treatment over vet care, but when you know for sure what it is, sometimes these things are very treatable yourself.

Incidentally depending on what fungus the vet finds it may be a good idea to invest in some for yourself. Some fungal infections can cross from pig to person, ringworm being one. x

Thanks, I was advised not to let the kids handle them until we know what it is for sure incase they catch it, I wash my hands about a million times a day so i should be ok, even if i touch the hutch i wash my hands. she took the sample to confirm it was ringworm i imagine. just hoping pip doesn't catch it too but will look out for the Hibiscrub, if i can prevent it then i will try..

I personally would clean everything, yes. Spores could settle and then re-infect.

Get rid of the bedding in there, boil the tubes if they are heat/water safe, get yourself some Hibiscrub and scrub out the hutch, and wipe it on the tunnels if you cannot use hot water. A normal hutch/cage cleaner from the pet shops generally isn't effective on fungal spores.

I'm really sorry this has happened, you have been thrown into the deep-end with it all! x

i have just changed them over to fleece on sunday, i cleaned all the hutch out in preparation - even hoovered all the bits up - the tunnels will have to be binned as they are just cardboard ones.

sorry, what should i clean the hutch with? not the hibiscrub? I have got normal pet disinfectant but i can't find the bit that said i need something stronger ?

i have found it, i need F10, is this only available to buy online ? I will have to wait a few days if that is the case :(

Omg.. that's typical! I thought ours blew at the weekend and I had piggie bedding to wash, I was so annoyed but luckily it was just the sockets blowing the fuse for some unknown reason.

not my washer, thank god, my sewing machine :) but just as annoying ! x

thanks, just ordered some F10 online.. Will get rid of the tubes later .. i don't have a full set of clean bedding yet as making it and my machine broke yesterday.. its all going wrong lol !
Aw no... sometimes these things all come at once. Hopefully it will all be plain-sailing soon. If your machine has gone wrong have you considered buying some VetBed or similar? You cut it to size - no machining required ;) You brush it down and wash it just as you would a fleece-quilt liner :) xx
