I was on late shift yesterday, so as it was a nice day she put the girls in the pen and let Rebel out in the garden. Betty bun was hopping about doing her own thing. She popped into the house to make a cuppa, she continued watching the gang through the window when all of a sudden, 2 big Tom cats jumped into the garden and started to try and catch the piggies. The pen was knocked allowing the girls to get out. Betty immediately ran over and lay across Lola protecting her from the cats whilst Rebel and Angel ran behind the garden bins. My wife scooped up Lola and Betty and put them back in their hutches and went straight out and got Rebel and Angel and put them back in their own hutches. I'm just hoping Rebel was too scared to do rudies with Angel. I've checked her over and there's no sign of her having mated, so fingers crossed, i'm not a granddad in 10 weeks. My wife done a brilliant impersonation of Fatima Whitbread using the clothes prop as a javelin! She launched it at the cats and scared them away.

Oh my god! How scary. Thank goodness they are all safe. How sweet of Betty to be so protective.

That was lucky! :o I'd have gone insane if that happened to me! Mine are quite safe though as the only cats that come into our garden are next door's, and they're used to small animals. They're curious but they don't bother with them mostly.

Was hilarious the other day though, I'd just let my rabbit, Clymo out of his hutch and he ran straight up to next door's cat who had been sunbathing in our garden, and they had a little nose-to-nose touch (was so cute!) and then the cat gave him a tap on the head and Clymo run off in disgust! Lol, the cat just stood looking at me for a moment, then ran up the fence :))

Jesus christ that was so lucky! thank god your piggies and rabbit are ok! I would have been scared witless! maybe see if you can get something heavy to balance on top of the run like a couple of spare bricks?

I hate cats too! Mainly just 'cos they treat my gravelled yard like a giant litter tray and they yowl outside the bedroom window sometimes too! pow-pow Plus they're just dirty scratty things in my opinion.
OH went out and threw a job of water over them one night :(|)
Yesterday afternoon I was home and had the back door open to let some fresh air in, which is right off the kitchen adjacent to the piggies c&c when all of a sudden there's a cat strolling through my house! Panicked of course because of my c&c set up right by the back door :...
Bloody things, I need some sort of electric force field, I feel like I can't even sit with the back door open now rolleyes

That's quite sad if you feel that strongly about an animal. I hope it wasn't sincerely meant :(

I used to have a cat which was alright because we weren't troubled by any other cats in our garden. But since Goblin and Smeagle (R.I.P) died a few years ago we have had many cats coming in our garden and spraying which to my horror makes my guinea pigs extremely nervous and i cant let them run free in the garden unless their under close supervision. :{

Don't hate cats - they're only doing what is their natural instinct, and knowing that cats will attack guinea pigs, you should ensure that when your piggies are outside that they are being left in a secure area. It's not only cats that can come and attack the piggies.

Cats get too much of a bad press!

Glad the animals are ok, but I absolutely agree. I am an animal lover, that includes cats. My mother has two cats who are like my little brother and sister. Neither of them would harm my pigs! Morris is actually very kind natured as well as being extremely intelligent so scatty is a load of rubbish as well! He will go up to worms or small animals and sit and watch them, talk to them and never attacks them. He even brings worms into the house when it rains and sits and watches them. They aren't hurt or anything - he doesn't even go after birds for god's sake! So don't tar all cats with the same brush! I could just as easily say that I hate people who don't like cats - which is true btw! It's been my experience that people who don't like cats are control freaks! A cat will not pander to you and beg for your attention like a dog. You have to earn their trust and just like ALL other animals, including humans, all have different personalities! You can control your dog. You cannot control a cat.

I AM OUT! :)>>>

Like I said, that's MY opinion, and yes that was said with sincerity! I genuinely can't stand them.
Obviously millions of people love them and millions don't, that's just life.

Oh and I didn't mean I don't like them because of the stereotype that they attack birds etc, it's not that, I just don't like them based on my personal experiences, and in recent years their consistant pooping in my garden rolleyes

I'm not overly bothered about cats to be honest. I think they're ok and would never want to see them hurt but they just aren't my cup of tea :) We have three or four that are always walking through my garden and use it as a toilet, which is quite annoying. Mind you, my garden is a little on the large side so theres plenty of space for them rolleyes

All my neighbour's cats use my front garden as a giant litter tray as it's just gravelled..........but they are independent animals and I accept that there is nothing that I can do to prevent it (and I have tried nearly everything out there....apart from lion dung). :)

I've found garlic granules work well although I'm all out right now but they seem to hate the smell :(|)

My husband once put chicken poo all over the garden, I'm not sure what he was wanting to achieve, but it absolutely reeked! rolleyes I can honestly say that it was one of the worse things I have ever smelt and it took ages to go. My next door neighbour came out of her house and was sniffing the air in disgust and saying to her husband 'what is that horrible smell?' I didn't say anything, just sneaked back indoors :red

Lol - never heard of anyone doing that before, maybe it's really good manure! :)

I used to keep chickens and they really were the best deterrant! Basically most cats are cowards and will only go one on one but when you have a group of chickens they're scared stiff! The first time I let them free range a cat came in and I crapped myself but the chickens chased the cat! :(|)

Oh and I think you can get garlic granules in wilkos.

The larger of the 2 looked quite crazed according to the wife. When she scooped the first 2 up, it reared up on it's back legs hissing and spitting with it's claws bared! Like others, I'm sick of them using my garden as a toilet. I've found the neighbours cats in my kitchen sat on the work surface where we prepare food! I hiss at them and they sprint out of the house. My immediate next door neighbour has 5 cats, none of them bother my pets. When she moved in, she gave me a water pistol and said everytime one of her cats go near the pigs, give them a quick blast on the water pistol, which I did. They still cross the garden, but if the pigs are out, they don't bother, infact the 3 legged one has chased other cats away when Betty is out, as he lies in the sun in our garden and has never bothered any of our animals. I must admit, I do have a soft spot for the old fella as he hasn't had a good life.

Orange peel in the garden is supposed to help keep cats away, i've never tried it :') but apparently they don't like the smell, plus the old water pistol trick (:

I'd need a heck of a lot of orange peel for my garden! I'm not sure I'd be able to eat that many oranges :(|) I have a water pistol, but I can't just sit at the window and by the time I get it the cats have moved on. One of them (next doors cat) was doing its business while I was walking up the garden to shoo him away. He stared me out, finished and just sauntered off! :(

I find it depressing to read people openly discussing their "hate" for one type of animal on a site for people who love another type of animal. This isn't the only thread I've seen it on - recently there has been more than one discussion on how people hate foxes and another about murdering rats. Shame on you.

I have to agree with those who said don't give cats a bad name. My cat is actually scared of the guinea pigs but I'd never leave them in a pen that wasn't 100% secure just in case. I can't control what he does or where he goes. Cat do dig gardens, our cat digs our garden and due to our business we have a lot of expensive plants which we don't want pulled up. We can't exactly tell him not to dig and just expect it to happen so everything is under mesh frames, solves the problem.

Some of the animal runs/playpens available now just aren't robust enough. I imagine some dogs if faced with guinea pigs would also see them as something to 'play' with. If you are worried about the play pen being knocked over either peg it or weight it down.

I'm half way - I have 2 cats who I adore - but - they're house cats so they can't hurt anything. I'm forever chasing cats away from the garden who use the borders as a toilet and it really winds me up as I love gardening and it's not pleasant finding surprises! It's only natural to them I know, if you've got to go you've got to go, but they should go in their owners garden not mine lol. My buns & pigs are fine in the garden though, they're nice and secure in their hutch/runs - they're sold as for chickens or rabbits, which I guess means they're more sturdy that standard hutches, there's certainly no way a cat could get in or knock them over.

Depends on how it's discussed I think. I have stated my opinion which is based on personal experiences and why I'm fed up of them. Theres nothing wrong with an opinion on a public forum. But killing or harming anything in anyway is not acceptable, like the stuff mentioned about rats and foxes.

Don't worry, I hate traffic wardens as well! If I catch one of them in my garden chasing the piggies and peeing against the fence, they'll get squirted with the water pistol as well! :))

i will be honest now and i'm sorry if i upset anyone but if i had to hate anything it would be the people that hurt cats. i have 9 rescue cats all of which have had a terrible life before coming to me. only 5 of them went out of our garden until some sicko shot one of my cats, burnt two of them with acid and swung the one that got shot around so violently by her tail that she had to have it amputated. her tail was smashed to bits, her face was cut where she hit the ground and she very nearly died. she spent a week in the vets fighting for her life due to some lowlife thinking it was fun. prior to this she kept going missing for days on end and coming back starving hungry and scared. we do not want to imagine what happened to her in the time she was gone. we have now spent all our savings paying huge vets bills and building a wooden structure (i call it my catservatory) off the back of the house so that they can get fresh air but without the dangers of getting hurt. the people who did this wanted to stop them 'messing' in their garden! i wish i could swing a few people around and let them see how it feels. they are nothing but scum

Jesus, that's truly shocking! :)>>>
I mean I can't stand them but I would never harm one! That's awful! :(
If you're fed up of them in your garden like a lot of folk try deterrents or a water pistol not physical harm!
