There's a Sticky on it somewhere. i'm sure someone will post the link..

If you breed two roan or Dalmation piggies you ahave a25% chane of producing what is known as a 'lethal'. They are born with multiple problems including micropthalmia (small or missing eyes, blindness), deafness, dental issues and other internal defects. Many don't survive past a few days old but those that do require a lot of extra care and attention to thrive. They are always white.

Hope that made some sense!

Oh I never knew about these. It sounds quite sad :(
But didn't you say they were adolescents? Surely he would have passed by now without proper vetinary treatment...maby he just has that colouring?:...

The problem with this hun is the fact that if these boys get into the 'wrong' hands and pregnancies occured, the pups could be born lethals.
It's a generation thing...they may be sold to people without experience but it's the assumption that someone may try breeding from them :(
My lilac girl has roan in her and someone was trying to fob her and her little sisters off to be sold in a pet shop :( - who went home with four baby piggies that day :x :)) At least she will never litter now :))

Nothing yet! Still not sure what to do and OH still unsure we can cope. Don't want to leave them there.

Is it irresponsi*le to get them and then if I can't cope hand them to a rescue? I think I can cope however OH not so sure..

this is similar to what i wanted to do with the pregnant female i put a thread on about, not sure that the rescues could cope if we all did this, but only a rescue can give you an answer, hope some one else can give you a more positive answer.

Yeah it's a hard one. Confident I can cope however I nee to give OH the confidence that some help is out there if I need it (not likely to...)

how about if you can't cope, you could call Helen at the Potteries? Last time I went (end of august) she was talking about a rodentologist she knows who's amazing and very cavy savvy in general so she may have some advice on something like this and I'm sure she'd be happy to help if you couldn't cope?

That's an idea. I wouldn't want to give them up however if we really couldn't manage I suppose I'd have to. I should perhaps ask Helen what she thinks...

I have emailed Helen at the Potteries explaining the situation so I will see what she says. I am going to phone in the morning and see if they are still there. I have a Guide & scout carwash fundraiser for a while but I should be able to go over after to check them out if they are still there.

Woo! Have had a reply and a promise of support so have text the OH and basically told her I am going to get the boys tommorow...

If I don't reappear on the forum tomorrow evening with piccies of the new lads it's because I'm being chopped up and buried under the patio for violating the 'no more piggys' rulerolleyes

Just as well I went to go get more carefresh etc today...

I actually had to go into a pet shop today :( to buy a glass bottle, usually buy stuff online or in places they don't sell pets but they had none in stock so was getting pretty desperate.
There were 10 teeny piggies (apparently 8 weeks old cos I asked :x) but had to walk away as my adrenalin was pumping. Unless I have forgotten how small pups are, these just didn't seem old enough :... beautiful fluffy bunnies too :(
OH just grabbed the bottle and we left but I did say in a rather loud voice that animal sales should be banned, he knew I was ready for a 'face off' and ushered me out :x All in all, they actually looked very well looked after, large clean pens, fresh water, pellets etc. but wish I'd not seen them :(
It just freaks me out to think they'll probably go to people with no experience or willing to be educated.

Just come in from picking up the little ones...

They are happy settling in quietly in the dining room away from my other lads just now.

Had a quick look at them *oth in the shop and a longer check when I got home. The larger one (as yet un-named) definately has some roaning on his ginger patches however it's hard to tell as he's mostly white. He was super relaxed in the pet shop even when it was real heaving with people - lying there with his little chicken legs out *ehind him like a ra**it! He's very active and a little skittish right now and no real pro*lems. Manky ears, no mites tho and dry feet. Otherwise ok.

Little one is a little lighter (not weighed them yet) than his friend and I am pretty sure he is either deaf and/or *lind as he just sits there and lets you catch him. He also doesn't seem to make any noises. I tried clapping and clicking fingers either side of his head and you get no movement or response. His weight is compara*le with his friends and his incisiors look ok so hopefully he has no dental issues however need to check molars too...

Will get a vet to check them out early next week though.

I'm happy! OH's response was 'well I'm not happy however don't spose there's much I can do to stop you....'

She's not at her happiest anyway after the first of 3 12hr night shift which was apparently horrific... At least I've not ended up under hte patio though!

oh i am so glad they were still there, sorry about the smaller one maybe having problems, but they have both definitely fallen on their feet with you.

What did i tell you? ;)

Sounds like its gonna be ok! I'm sure Helen will be able to support you with any queries on their health should you run into any trouble but I'm just glad theyre with you and not someone else, who might not give them the care they need or give them up at the first sign of trouble.

Pigtures please! :))

Just letting them settle in first and I need to charge my camera up however photos will arrive soon.

Need to go do things like wash up and generally make myself the most loving girlfriend ever to make up for the piggy influx. Will post again later though witha progress report..

Take Gill out or cook a nice meal, or buy her something :))

Works with me but I'm so easily bought.....:))

Then tell her its all about the good karma lol

Just caught up on this thread! Wow! Congrats on your 2 new arrivals! So glad they've found their way into your life!

your going to have to do a lot of chores to get back in Gill's good books I bet - I'm sure she'll fall in love with them soon enough! Can't wait for pigtures!

Oooh I am quite seriously in the dog house.... She won't talk to me only to Merry & Suilven!

I suppose she'll come round eventually.:red

sorry your in the dog house. What a dilema you were in! But am glad you came to that decision and they are safe with you. :) Good luck with the girlfriend... :)

I did LOL when I read she's only talking to Merry & Sullivan!
You need to persuade her it's for the greater good :))
