Hello Lovely, I'm so sorry that you are going through all this, it's hideous when they get ill.

With regard to his grave, would your OH's parents mind if you put a plant there? Then they could have something nice for their garden and you'll have something you could take with you if you ever get a garden yourself.

(((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))

When Theo died we buried him in the garden, and our wonderful neighbours gave us a baby sunflower which we planted on top. DON'T feel bad about crying at the vets, we were all in absolute bits with Theo, we took his body to the vets so they could check it wasn't something contagious. (It wasn't) I am an emotional person, but never like to lose control in public, but I couldn't help it. I cried long and hard. And do you know what? I felt much better the next day for it! Let it all out. It's better than bottling it up!
Will be thinking about you, you are doing the kindest act. X x

Thank you, I know I'll fall apart with his death, but what hurts me the most is choosing his death, I mean it's horrible to think this is his last night on earth, tomorrow morning will be his last meal. I'm even doubting what I've done now because he's gone all active again and is drinking and eating and bobbling about. His breathing is a bit forced though. The receptionist said they'll make sure its the right thing, by checking for pain and such and tell me if i can still keep him (say if there isn't any pain and he's just uncomfortable due to the excess water under his skin) i they could just drain it, he'd be okay :(

Sorry you have this dilemma:(

You have to put your faith in the vets and know that if they phts it's the best thing for him. It's far better I think to end his suffering than to prolong it if this is the case.

We had to rush our hamster to the out of hours vets once he had a prolapse and he had to be pts:( It was my daughter's hamster and she was away at camp at the time.

It cost £80 in all, we could have waited till morning but I coudn't let him suffer.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow. If the vet advises you that it's time for Africa to go, then it will be the bravest and most loving gift you can give your boy to let him pass peacefully and be free from pain. Be strong hun. xx

Oh hun, I'm so sorry to hear Africa has got worse. I think you are doing the best for him if he's feeling uncomfortable.

I'll be thinking of you in the morning xx

Also, you mentioned engraved stones further up. We got this for our bunny to mark the spot where he was laid to rest. http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/letterfest/product/date_stone

Hugs to you xx

I'm so sorry hun, but in the end it's what's best for him that matters, however hard it may be :(

Will be thinking of you in the morning. Please, don't feel ashamed to show your emotions...it only shows how much you care and it will be easier on you than keeping it all bottled up.

Thinking of you and Africa. Big hugs. x

I'm so sorry i've just read thru your whole thread, OMG sending you and little Africa loads of hugs and loves xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
I have never had to have a piggie PTS but if i did i'd have to stay no matter what

so sorry to hear about Africa. we lost one of our girls yesterday, and we didin't get the chance to say a proper goodbye, she was still alive when we left for work, by the time we got home, she had passed over. our sympathies are with you at this very sad time.

:( 8... 8...

The vet didn't think it was the right time to put him down, he checked him over and told me he had mites >.<, which is why he has scabs, obviously low immune system, he's always pulled his fur out which can be a sign of either discomfort or boredom and he said once again, he's properly going to go in the next month if not sooner. I told him straight out if I could have more time with him without him suffering I would choose that over putting him to sleep... well... he's still with me.

Saturday morning I woke up in real pain, I walked into the pigs room and the pig was pop corning about :S he saw me and ran over to stand at the edge of his cage and wheek for some herbal hay which I gave him and he gladly gobbled up. I checked his behind and the poo slides out effortly, he stopped making any sort of noise other than vibrating when I stroked him or held him. I took him to the vet anyways because what do I know about his pain and as I said above, the vet (who has guinea pigs himself) thinks he has a little more time as he said that altho hes in a little pain, painkillers will help him with that and that he's still active, he was walking around the vets table...

I don't know, I guess he picked up on the fact I would rather him go naturally if possible... so... he's home right now and seems okay so far. He even climbed out his fleese and ran across our sofa to ask for a biscuit (we were dunking some in tea) lol.

I doubt it'll be long either way if he goes naturally of eventually I'll have to visit the vets for one last trip. Thank you for your messages, it has been hard but I just might have a few more days with him.

Oh I'm so glad to hear that Africa is still fighting!

Huge hugs to you, I can't begin to imagine how you have felt these last few days. I hope Africa continues to do well with his painkillers. If he's trying to steal your biscuits he must be feeling better! :(|)

Generally speaking if a vet thinks the animal still has quality of life they won't put them to sleep, well none that I know.

I am glad Africa still has some time.

ahhhhhhh this is lovely that you both have more time together x)x)
Whee will have all paws crossed that the meds will help Africa xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
all the best to you too love, you've had a terrible time :( xx>>>xx>>>

Glad to hear you have a little more time with him, it is encouraging that he is behaving more like his normal self. Also glad the vet gave painkillers, which will make Africa more comfortable.

If he has mites, is the vet going to treat him for these? The oedema you have described over his body can be a reaction to dead mites. Possible that it is not related, but it is striking that Africa has had ongoing issues with mites and has the oedema.

The vet said all guinea pigs have mites, the reason they suddenly become a problem (show up) is that it's a sign of a low health, say their immune system just dips a little. I've treated him with some stuff ClaireLove sent me in the post, all my pigs are being treated atm because I noticed the symptoms on Kenya and Corly a month or so after Africa got rid of his.

Today he's munching about in his cage, the lump looks a bit like he's lost loads of weight and just has skin lol, sometimes he does make me laugh, his eyes are bright and when I call him he gets excited so he's still alright today. I'm monitoring him daily and if he has more than 2-3 days where he's not interested then that will be the right time.

I gave him a bath around 3 weeks ago after he finished his mite treatment, all the other pigs get their last treatment today, Africa has 2 more and Corly has 2.

It was the same with my first pig (his friend) Leo in October 2009. He died slowly over a few days before having a heart attack, I was in tears everyday and depressed for weeks afterwards. I don't deal with death very well, I have nightmares about losing people (mainly my mom) and I grieve before I have to. Sometimes I wonder why I get animals with such short lifespans... I honestly thing theres something up with Petsathome animals, both Leo and Africa were from there and both seem to be dying too young, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2... I mean Africa will be 4 next year but I doubt he'll see it, Callis and Kenya are from there, Kenya drinks a lot of water which the vet says can be a sign of the liver/kidneys not working properly so maybe later on in his life he'll get what Africa does (they are identical in personality too) and Callis has a inner ear infection and head tilt like Leo did! lol

I'm glad you have some more time with Africa and that the vet has given him some meds to make him comfortable. xx

awww was thinking about you and africa all weekend, so glad you have more time, and i agree totally that no need for him to go if still has quality of life. Dont they amaze you when they just go and bounce back after breaking your heart grrrr.....................lol x>>

It does, his breathing was even going on Friday night, so god knows what Saturday was about, I did syringe feed him his favourite baby food? His poops are still very soft and ball up inside him but I've noticed *** his balls are swollen (the liquid build up) If I just gently sqeese him, everything falls out easily.

yes you can understand his problem so keep him comfortable. look after carefully with the help of your doctor
