OMG was he in that little hamster cage?? SHOCKING!

I got a hamster from the free ads in one of those cages and got him a new one as i didn't even think they were sufficient for a hamster!

omg seriously, he was in a hamster cage? poor little boy! Least he will be well looked after now, hope the neutering goes well and he likes living with the girls

I'm so so happy.....from terrified to hungry! look! My OH just called me in to look!

I will be smashing up the cage before binning it to ensure no other poor animal including a hamster has to ever live in it!

He's a bold boy already! Perhaps he is tamer than you think. Piggies in smaller cages have nowhere to run to so I think it actually makes them tamer...

You did an amazing thing today, he has a wonderful life ahead of him.

I wouldn't even keep a hamster in that cage, so glad you are smashing it up.

Awwwww, Hello little Hamster boy :)p You are gorgeous and your new life starts from now, happy times ahead. :)p

Carolinemm and hubby great you offered him a safe roomy loving home

He he he! 'hamster boy' :)) I'm hoping he will get on with the girls! They are quite bolshy! choosing to spend most their day on separate levels as per the photo! :))

Poor thing, not surprised he is used to people considering he had absolutely nowhere to hide in that travesty of a cage - poor boy had no choice!

So pleased someone got him, I hope he passes quarantine ok x

Wow OMG imagine keeping the poor thing in that! I mean common sense would tell you surely, that an animal 10 times the size of a hamster needs a much bigger cage mallethead
Thank god for people like you Caroline xox

Well the woman did inform me he would need a bigger cage rolleyes I explained he would have a 6ft x 2ft double hutch, she thought that this was a good thing, which I think might be worse as they acknowledged that his cage was so unsuitable! on the housing thread I explained he had been bumped out of his 'guinea pig' cage for a tortoise which she informed me her son was now bored of also and she was trying to get 'rid' of as well! I didnt go into the house otherwise I probably would have also come home with a tortoise! xx

Well done for rescuing him and giving him a lovely new home. I thought that was the cage I had for my hamster but no mine was bigger than that, I can't believe they kept the poor piggie in there :(

Yet another happy ending, thanks for rescuing him. Hope he gets through quarantine ok. He should have a special name seen as though he has gone from rags to riches so to speak.:))

Yes fingers crossed :), I'm just wondering if to put him through the trauma of the vets early next week as he seems to be eating and drinking fine. I was going to take him for a general check up and to check his now broken tooth since the woman dropped him! (well its like a hairline across his tooth and vicky identified it as broken as I stopped off at hers for advice before I brought him home - I wouldnt have known probably!) But hes still so nervous, I just cleaned his carrier out and he was so scared of me, just wanted to get back in and hide although he was relaxing last night a bit as the pics showed...I'm going to look through other threads as Id like to know when I should bath him etc - his grease gland is icky! :)) but he would be terrified! xx oooh and we have named him Pipkin :)) we must have gone through a 100! we can never decide!

Hello just found this thread - loving the name Pipkin:) my first guinea was called Pip some 32 years ago!

Glad he is settling in well - amazing to see the cage size difference - I'm so glad he is safe now - you are such a star! Thank you so much for going to get him - I was feeling so helpless without driving - I have not ventured back on gumtree since!

I'm sure with all the TLC he will settle in - hope everything goes well - he is so cute:)

Gosh i think you should call him Lucky cause he is really Lucky he found you! I am really worried that they have a tortoise because they are such specialised pets and need the absolute appropriate care. You cant buy a tortoise for a kid for goodness sake!

You did such an amazing job, well done for taking him in.

What is it with people keeping piggies in hamster cages? Percy spent the first year of his life in a hamster cage :(

Hope he continues to get braver, lots of chin tickles!

my cousin found a tortoise in the street when he was in his early teens (possibly even 11 or 12). He took him home, had him checked at the vets, wrote to his Junior Science magazine to find out about appropriate care, etc. He's alway cared for him on his own.

Poplypheme (that's the tortoise's name, not my cousin's) was a baby then, the size of a hand and grew to adult size, ahem, 2ft-long shell (a beast), he has an enclosure in the garden, possibly 10ftx6ft with rocks, hideys, etc. Fred (my cousin) goes in the enclosure, sits on the rocks and calls him and Polypheme plods out of hiding... really cute!

Fred is passionate about amphibians and animals in general and has rescued many turtles, iguanas, etc over the years. He trained to be a vet but unfortunately he was even more passionate about partying! he's now a biology teacher and still loves animals.

What a lovely story.

Aww glad to hear he has a name now, he does look like a Pipkin too :)

I know... its absolutely awful, hopefully the tortoise will be as lucky but theres no way I could have brought it home :( I cant believe people can walk into a pet shop and buy them - they live for about 80 years dont they?!

What a lovely story.

That is lovely :) and a man after me and my partners heart! We are ecologists and survey wildlife spending most summers looking for great crested newts :) (I did a masters degree in wildlife management and conservation) he did amazing to look after such a complicated creature so young. It was very hard for me not to do something about the tortoise too, but I'm guessing they will have wanted a lot of money and he wasnt yet advertised she just mentioned it in passing and as I said didnt let me in :( - poor thing may be on gumtree also:(
