no i won't be going back to her i actually made the appt to be with chris but as soon as i hung up the phone the vet nurse went straight to Dr Meeks and told hermallethead. Its none of her business and she won't be touching my piggie again she has put him through too much already.
i might try the cold flannels Boris is going to love me lol
2 lots of meds
10 bed changes
4 syringes of water
bepanthen everyday
Massages
and now flannels
all that in one day lol
he must be getting annoyed of my company right nowrolleyes

Bless him, he does have a lot going on doesn't he! Poor boy. It's only because of your dedication, time and love that he has lasted through this experience as well as he has. The road hasn't been smooth, but it really doesn't get a great deal smoother in such a situation.

Poor Boris - and it won't get much less after the splint has come off, because you will have to completely recondition his movements and muscles. Like teadragon said, swimming therapy will probably be the best option in view of his back. Peter Gurneey has something about this on his health page as well. http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/index.html

How is his itchiness and hairloss? That must be another stress factor for him, apart from the sores and swollen legs.

If he makes it back to being a happy piggy, it's all down to you alone! I'm sending you my best vibes. You're always in my thoughts!

PS: I'm glad that you've booked Chris!

hi everyone yes i am thinking about his swimming and physio just have to find a physiotherapist that will work on a piggie:p and also some massage in between from me of course

I don't think you need an actual physiotherapist, only a vet who is willing to read up on the leading edge of guinea pig medicine which is still in its infancy compared to dog and cat medicines. My previous vet drove me up the wall when one of my boys was sick, I had to REQUEST pain medication and then sign and declare that I was aware metacam isn't registered for small animals. So much trouble for pain medication that made his life so much more comfortable.

Listen, I had a guinea pig who lost the feeling in his hind legs and so the use - however, the circumstances were completely different.

I found this from my guinea pigs medical thread in another forum:

"I've been looking through the forum on paralysis, and I'm so badly hoping that his paralysis is something like "They hit a nerve the wrong way in his spine while doing SubQ's but it'll correct itself" or that he's just being lazy or that perhaps he was happy last night or really relaxed and rolled the wrong way and hurt himself...

I've been looking into the "cures" and found nothing hopeful: sterioids, encouragement (the wheely-flip-flop) and Peter Gurney suggests swim therapy... "

Which is when I got thinking: your pigs wheels seem to only support him on his hindlegs where the legs are trailing. Could a more comfortable version of the wheels be found so he isn't immobilised in his cage?

Also: have you been feeding him copious amounts of vitamin C?

hi um Boris isnt in his wheels anymore i got them taken off the same night they were put on.I'm sorry if i seem dumb but what does copious meen?
i have a very wide variety of foods alot that have good amounts of vitamin C so i don't think he would be lacking in it. i have also been careful not to over do the high calcium foods.swimming therapy is a really good idea but I'm not sure how effective considering he has not been moving very well at all everyone who see's him and even the vet aren't very confident right now but i guess we will see,he gets his splint off tomorrow so thats exciting fingers crossed it works xxxxx

The point is swim therapy isn't always to develop movement, but also to help encourage it.

Some of the theory I get from swim therapy is that, if he's in pain from using his legs or believes that he cannot, then he's unlikely to use his legs in a weighted world. Water helps to support his weight and encourage him to subconsciously begin to swim - moving his hind legs. It doesn't always happen instantly but it's something you could start to try and see if a brain-spine connection can be made again.

Have you spoken to your vet about it yet, or asked them to look into it for you?

Boris's poo

hi i have mentioned it to the vet but have to wait until tomorrow as thats when my vet gets back from holidays i will definantly try the swim therapy;)

Hi just needed to ask if anyone knows why Boris would all of the sudden have diarhea its not really bad and some of it is still solid but seeing as he is up for such a big day tomorrow i want him to be as healthy as possible should i be worried?

Make sure he has lots of hay! You could also crush up some of Basil's poo and mix it with a little bit of water to help stabilising his guts.

Ideally, he shouldn't have fresh food - but you have to weigh up the risks! You are in a place where there is no "rights" or "wrongs", just which problem is worse/more urgent...

All the best for Boris and for tomorrow!

Keeping everything I have crossed:

10 fingers
10 toes
4x14 = 56 claws
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

thanks thats a really good idea with Basils poo;) he does have lots of hay but i might push the hay more and slightly cut down his veges might help.Yes i am very nevous about tomorrow I'm still up and its 2.30am here lol i have to be up at 7ammallethead

Vibes for Boris please

hi Boris went to the vet this morning and i am beside myself with worry can i have everyones best wishes for him please he has gotten this far mostly because of all this great support xxxxx

COME ON BORIS DARLING xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

all our love and wheeeeeeeeks for both Boris and you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Newest update!

hi just spoke to the vets and they were meant to take the splint off this morning although they hadn't done it because as i suspected Dr Meeks(cart and wheel vet) tried to talk my vet out of it ahhhhh she just can't butt out!i spoke to Chris and he confirmed it with me that i still want it done so its getting done now,but geez how much can this woman do befor she leaves Boris and I alone.

Just read the thread....
Have you ever heard of the saying "One crow never claws another ones eye out?"
I think that is so true in the medical profession, human or veterinary!

Hope all goes well for Boris! Sending vibes and lots of eeks from my brood.

yay Boris is back home safe and sound without his splint:)) he is so happy and bubbly. He did chew on a sore right before i picked him up though,so he has very light flexi bandage on his front leg.his movement is amazing he is turning around, moving his legs more its fantastic,he is a little skinny from stress and from being restricted by the splint but apart from that he is fine:)i will post pics soon xxxxx

Yay well done Boris and you!! I am sure he is very relieved to be out of the splint and able to move around much better, I am sure in time and with some practice he will be much more mobile. His muscles in his legs might be a bit weak *** he hasn't moved them in weeks so I would definatetly look into the swimming therapy for him! It's the same with humans when they had a broken leg and couldn't move it for weeks they have to build up the muscles again in that leg. All the best to you and Boris and I hope you can soon live together with little Basil! ^)^)^)

Fantastic news - what a smile on my face! You must be so very pleased. Good luck to Boris - looking forward to seeing pictures of him...

Well done, Bonnie - you have pulled Boris through! BIG PAT ON THE SHOULDER!

Boris must be in piggy heaven without his splint! Can he move his left leg as well?

Now you can attend to all his other ailments - but with Boris back on board, he will help you mop them! That must be an ecstatic boy! can't wait to see what Basil thinks about the change!

This is the best news! What a day! Looking forward to pics. Given a few more weeks of general pampering and cleaning up I should hope he'll be right as rain again. Way to go Boris!

Hi everyone i would have replied sooner but i filled in at work for my OH he needed rest:).Thankyou for such nice postsxx>>>xx>>>
Yes boris just pushed off the ground with both back feet so he has great movement this early on,i think some of his not moving was the bandage was a little to tight and sadness may have stopped him from wanting to try.
he looks so happy i am over the moon.My OH and i keep looking at him and saying to eachother that its weird to see his body i actually forgot what he looked like under there, the little bit of white he has on his back is still snow white amazingly but oh my gosh he smells. The vet wants a few days for Boris to relax and have some of his own movement before we start the swimming which i am fine with just moving around the cage is doing him great.I got his teeth checked while Boris was there and even though they are a little long he is still eating fine so chis said we will leave it for a few days he didnt want to stress Boris out to much in one day so i have to monitor how his eating is so far a big appetite for hay and pellets i have cut the veges back to half the amount for the moment i want him to have foods that will help wear his teeth down.Basil,Smokey and Bandit also had teeth, nails and general checkup today and all are healthy although he couldnt stop laughing at how fat Smokey is:red.I would love to attach pics but the add attachments button at bottom of thread or whatever its called isnt there so i don't know how i can upload maybe ive reached my limit?

sorry for the long post btw xxxxxx
Bonnie,Happy Boris & the boys

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear how well he is doing already. It's been such a long journey, you couldn't hope for a better start once it was removed. The splint can't have been much fun, I really hope it has done the job it was meant to. Did the vet let you keep it?

Everyone is surprised at how heavy my Dexter is (even Vedra, and she sees a lot of piggies!). It's great to see reactions to the sizes of our especially large (or especially dainty) piggies.

You can create an account at www.photobucket.com (or any image hosting site) and upload your pics on there, and use the IMG tags to post pics directly into your normal posts.

okies will try that with pics thanks, yes i have his splint I'm kind of attached to itrolleyes.yes Smokey looks like a baloon I'm still trying to monitor his eating he looks like he will pop he has just gotten fatter and fatter everyone who comes over call him oompa loompamallethead
