Interstitial cystitis

Just thought i would create this thread, as I'm sure my sow dot is going through Interstitial cystitis, would love to hear some exeperiences about this problem and what things you have tried to ease the discomfort a bit. I am trying cystease at the moment and loxicom

dot is currently going through another down time through it, shes ok but has dropped off in activity wise. I may not be on here much longer tonight, but will catch up tomorrow
 
I've had two piggies with IC.
Nerys had it for nearly 3 years but did well on cystease. She then lived another 3 years totally free of any bladder problems to the ripe old age of 8 years.

My Caron had IC for 1 1/2 years and then lived another 1 1/2 years without any issues. She lived to nearly 5 years as one of the longest lived piggies from a large rescue from a rat-infested hellhole of breeding gone totally out of control.

Cystease and metacam did the trick for me. I upped the cystease and the metacam whenever there was an acute phase and then went on a maintenance dose in the interim between flare-ups.
 
My Emma has it for 3 years and a daily dose of dog metacam and one full capsule of cystease mixed with 1ml of water helped her.

Ellen has had it for 2.5 years and given the same treated as Emma. She hadn’t had any bladder problems for over 10 months so with permission from my vet, I stopped her treatment 8 months ago.

Ellen is currently being treated for a uti but she’s having her urine retested on 19th November. If she still has blood but no other signs of infection, we will have to assume that the IC is back
 
Anyone know where i can buy a bigger pack of feliway cystease online for a cheap price?

Also is it worth trying her on diluted cranberry juice? And if so what one? The only one i see is in tesco called ocean spray but its sweetened.

I used to get mine from Doolittle’s Dispensary. You get 100 for £19 (Plus £2.99 p&p) you can also get packs of 300 but they’re out of stock of those at the minute https://www.doolittlesdispensary.com/products/search_results/Cystease My vet advises against the use of cranberry juice as it can in fact irritate the bladder further

Thanks 👍I'm hoping she gets through this bad moment soon. It normaly passes. Wish i could cure it. I dont know if its a good idea to put burnie with her if she has this. Might be a good thing though. She might feel less stressed with a friend. They reckon stress is the cause and she is a very nervous pig. Fireworks didnt help atall

I think she'll be less streddes with a friend🙂
 
@Claire W . Ive now started preparing a refrigerated cystease for a 3 day worth mix. I did 3 capsules and 3ml of filtered water. So i can do 1ml per evening. It has mixed well already. Goes quite thick

That’s what I used to do too :) just make sure you shake the bottle of mixture before use

I know i remember u telling me. Oops i never shook it because its in a very well washed out shot glass. No lid. Il have to get something tomorrow
 
Dot is really confusing me 😪
Its one thing to know whats wrong. But why the hell has she stopped eating as much hay but can eat veg, nuggets, grass and hay cookie fine. It cant be teeth problems because i see her eating hay a bit and she does it fine. Slivvers in like spaghetti!

Her weight is very good and she looks fine, bright eyes and lively
 
Just a little update on dot. She spends most of her time in her hidey house. She has an appointment at the vet tomorrow but I'm doubting il be back from work anyway. I only have the appointment as a back up incase she gets any worse. I will cancel the appointment as soon as i know what work i have tomorrow.

Would a heat disc that i have help her with any discomfort? Also is it normal for guinea pigs to bob there head up and down whilst eating? I have noticed she keeps draggin her back side around whilst pooing aswell

Yea but shes on her own. I dont think shes marking. I dont really know, shes really not active atall. I wish i could bond burnie early but i cant risk it its only week 3. Guinealynx has said 2 weeks is fine, but I'm not ignoring my vet and risking dot, a pregnancy would probably kill her

Shes basicly living on grass at the moment. Funny thing is, her weight is brilliant. Shes 1kg

Try to keep the stress levels low and don't separate piggies in pairs unless they remove themselves and go into a corner/stare at the wall. ;)

I have 2 single pigs. I still have 3 weeks until burnies sperm is definitely dead. Have you had i.c pigs lose appetite?
 
It wouldn’t harm to have her checked over if you’re concerned although I’m pretty sure that single piggies do still scent mark.

I was lucky that my piggies didn’t lose their appetite when they were having an IC flare but theirs was on the mild side. It can affect all piggies differently though
 
My IC SOW has two cystease a day now ( one a day didn’t manage it properly) and metacam. I adjust almost daily depending on how she is. I syringe 10ml twice a day of filtered water into her and that seems to keep her flushed through. I find her coat is amazing as she’s so hydrated and I guess the cystease maybe helps? She’s my fourth Guinea in 18 years on this regime and it seems to work..so far.

You’re sensible to have her checked by the vet if nothing else to stop you worrying. Cystease can be linked to stress as it is in humans, so try and keep things calm for her. All the piggies who have had this with me, have been piggies which really are of an anxious disposition. Every single pig was difficult to bond and one was a real bully..although I adored her! Just something to consider? Is she happy?

Edited to add, just saw that she is a stressed type of piggy..sorry didn’t read that before!

Thanks for this, il start giving her extra water via syringe . Ive been giving plenty of cucumber.
 
I give 2 rings twice a day. Il keep an eye on that👍 dot at the moment is as bad as she was just before our wedding in july. And she pulled through that just about when she came to you . Funny that lol.

I'm not sure wever to take her carrot cottage out or not? She can still hide under her hay, its just with it in, she just stays in. But i have to keep the stress low so......?
 
Hi, sorry to hear your piggy is having ic problems, my Gremlin has it but thankfully hasn't been as serious as some of the cases I've read on here. For the last six months it's been pretty quiet and he's been good. I sprinkle half a cystease capsule on a thin slice of cucumber every morning which has been successful so far. It took a while to diagnose the problem initially and after some vets visits and even a change of vets, an x-ray and lots of research finally found a solution. Started with some loxicom and a full capsule every day and now down to half with no pain relief. Hope you get it sorted out and have a pain free piggy soon.
