My poor piggy has ringworm. It's been a stressful month with coming home, losing a sister and gaining a new herd member so I'm not surprised that she has something wrong. I went to the vets and she has been given itrafungal oral solution (0.19ml daily) and Daktarin miconazole nitrate cream twice a day. I know I've had this for Athletes foot... is it good for piggies as well? I have scrubbed and cleaned as much as I can and she is in a separate cage, but I can't keep her in a separate room due to space issues. Will this be enough? How bad is ringworm? Should she get better in the end? Thanks to anyone who posts a reply.

The itrafungol should take care of the ringworm within about a week; you still need to take it for a bit longer to prevent it from returning. Daktarin can help but it is not absolutely necessary with itrafungol, as it is a fungicidal cream. We no longer recommend creaming, especially in warmer weather.

You will find the information in this guide here helpful; it should answer most of your questions. I would strongly recommend to get hold of F10 disinfectant, as it is the only one that is proven to kill ringworm spores, especially if you want to prevent a recurrence.

Thank you Wiebke! I've got F10 on order and I am being careful not to touch the piggies in the wrong order. Will it matter that I have them in the same room? Is there a shampoo I should use for all of them to help?

We have found enilconazole/imaverol dip most effective in treating/preventing ringworm and fungal - it is suitable for all ages and the mildest around sensitive organs like eyes, ears and the mouth/nose area. I would recommend that you dip all piggies once the acute ringworm phase is over in about a week (let the dip dry on the fur without any rinsing) and then again two weeks later to prevent an outbreak in any affected piggies, but also to avoid that ringworm spores are being carried across in the fur even though the piggy itself may not be affected. It is not quite cheap, but most good shampoos aren't. The cheaper ones can be pretty harsh on guinea pig skin and cause problems if they come into contact with the eyes (bulging etc.).

The acute ringworm needs to run its due course and all affected hairs need to come off, whether that is from an oral medication that gets into all the otherwise difficult to reach places or a dip (enilconazole is very good at removing affected hairs without your having to pull them out). The less you handle affected piggies, the smaller the risk of catching it yourself with an instinctive scratch.

The timing of the dipping is there is to prevent transmission and to catch any transmission that has already happened. ;)
