Is Nutraflora a safe probiotic?

I have a few of my Guinea pigs on antibiotics at the moment to help them stop sneezing and coughing (liquid baytril I believe) and hopefully get better. I asked the vet for a probiotic and all they had was one called Nutraflora for cats and dogs. The ingredients are: (Probiotic Bacteria [enteroccus faecium], prebiotics, natural antioxidants, vitamin b12).

They sound fairly natural and it comes in capsules to break into their food. I'm just worried about it being for cats and dogs because they are meat eaters. The vet said she can't 100% guarantee it's OK for Guinea pigs but it doesn't say that it's not.

I am going to order vetark pro c probiotic on amazon but that won't come until wednesday and I want to get some good bacteria back into their system. I'll post pics of the front and back, thank you.

I personally wouldn't give it if the vets not even sure if it's safe. :yikes:

I'd just wait and get the pro c.

You can get pro c in pets at home if you've one near you.

Piggies have very different gut bacteria to cats and dogs so I would get one that is specifically for guinea pigs and rabbits... pro-C or fibreplex

I don't I live in Ireland and the closest pet shop is maxi zoo, they don't sell them there and the vets here are normal vets and don't have any specifically for Guinea pigs so I will have to order online :/

That's what I was thinking :/ i will order the one online and hopefully it comes before they start having too many gut issues.

Thanks I was just making sure because she was saying it'd Probably be OK, but that isn't exactly the confidence I'd be looking for, I'll save it for my dog or cat incase they need it sometime. Thank you

Hi

You can get probiotics in any pet shop or can order them online.
However, if you have a healthy companion, then properly made 'poo soup' (i.e. live healthy guinea pig gut microbiome transfer) is actually more effective than any probiotic powder, is always available and won't cost you anything. It mimics natural behaviour from recovering piggies.
You can find information on how to make poo soup so the microbiome is still live and also on various probiotic and support feeding formulas in this guide here: Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

Here is the link to our emergency, crisis and bridging care advice with is a collection of all the information you will need in a hurry, including tips for a first aid kit for guinea pigs, links to resources and practical advice for emergencies as a kind of 'one stop' go to information resource especially out-of-hours when access is not optimal or you have to wait longer for a vet appointment.

My old lady Jess has been on Baytril and it really messes with her little tummy, poo soup really is great so definitely recommend! Pulls the funniest faces and not the biggest fan but it really helps!
Hope it’ll help with your piggies :)

I was wanting to try this but my dad thinks it's a bad idea. Maybe this is a silly question but does gender matter? If I take poop from one gender for the other, I have boys and girls on baytril at the moment and I have one boy who isn't taking baytril and one girl.

No not at all, my male Luigi has been donating his giganta-poops to my Jess! It’s a really good way to settle tummies, have done it for years! Only downside is it can get a little messy with a piggy like her that spits out meds etc so make sure they’re on a towel or something!

Yes I don't think they'd enjoy it 😅

Yeah not too pleasant I can imagine! But they eat their own poo so not too torturous! Just pretend it’s a special chocolate milkshake if it puts you off! :))
