I bought my F10 from viovet online
but plenty of other places stock it
if you have a reptile store nearby they may well stock it as well.
i only heard of it recently too - before then i was using Virkon S which isn;t effective against fungal spores grrrr


it's been 8-10 weeks for me as i thought at first i was looking at a mite problem, when it didn't respond to ivermectin i realised it was fungal, so started treatment with gorgeous guineas, as at that point i also thought it was only in two of my piggies, i was *very* wrong about that though!

then went onto imaverol dips every three days and when i didn't see much improvement, went to the vet.

they're now on a course of Itrafungol, which may well be what your vet will prescribe you - i just wish the vet i went to would have given me it for cost - i paid £58 for the bottle and i need to go back for a second one to be able to complete the treatment! mallethead

Yes that's it! I'm lucky he's being very nice (but then that's because another vet there wrongly diagnosed mites and cost be £60 for nothing)...I'm getting it for £28 today. Because mine are so tiny he said I'll probably only use a tenth of the bottle, so at least I'll have plenty if they need it for longer.

I've wondered about baths, do you think they would have any effect? The trouble is it's around their eyes, ears and noses, so not sure a bath would get it. Plus they haven't been with us 2 weeks yet so might not be ready for such things.

the itrafungol should be enough to clear them as it works systemically, so the baths as well aren't really necessary.
still putting the creams on the scabby areas though is a good idea as it will help to soothe the skin.

i used itrafungol on its own a few years back on a sow i took in and it cleared her up perfectly, i didn't bath her throughout her treatment, but i did give her a gorgeous guineas melt and a bath after her treatment was completed, just to "be sure"
but that was more for my piece of mind than anything.

imaverol can be used very close to the eyes and around the mouth/nose (i've heard that it's non irritating to the eyes too so not a huge worry if you get it in them, but it's best to avoid it)
but then this isn't a bath in the traditional sense, it's a dip, just a solution which you saturate them completely in then leave to dry.

with the itrafungol though, did your vet recommend clipping their fur or just leaving it as is?

on the leaflet (which i read backwards and forwards as the vet i saw gave very little guidance!) recommends clipping cats at the start of the treatment to promote regrowth to shed the affected hair.
not sure if the same applies to guineas though, it would be interesting to hear what your treatment plan is x

Haven't really got a treatment plan as such, and they didn't mention clipping their fur. I'm giving them 0.1 ml each daily for 7 days, then back for a check up. Should be interesting as they gave them their first dose yesterday so I could watch how to do it - so I'm on my own with today's dose! They're good boys, so hopefully they'll behave!

The vet did say not to apply the cream at the same time though, so am leaving that for now.

i'm just not sure if it's the "done thing" with piggies as i've never seen it mentioned anywhere to clip unless you're treating topically

Oh bless you...has it not made any difference yet then? I was kind of hoping for a miracle cure after a week of treatment!

Yep they're still mini pigs which makes it so annoying as they're not getting any cuddles etc so aren't really settling in well. Poor boys.

Poor old Patch has developed another 'patch' of it on his nose (already has it around his eye, behind both ears and it was on the other side of his nose), and that's since they've been having the oral treatment! It really worries me that we're just not going to sort this and he'll just get worse and worse.

I can safely say Patch looks a right state!

Oh bless him. It does tend to get worse before it gets better. Just stick it out, but if it doesn't start improving soon it might be worth popping back to the vet to try something else. Fingers crossed it will clear soon.

Thank you, I will. We have an appointment booked for Thursday anyway as the vet wanted to check their progress after a week of treatment. I just feel so sorry for them. Anyone who sees them just think they're manky.

Aww, poor boys. It is an awful thing to happen as soon as you get them, but they will love you more for making them better . I really do hope they start to improve soon as it's horrible having to be so cautious around them.

I've not noticed any difference yet, but to be honest i've been keeping handling to a minimum and only going to see them once a day to feed and water & top up bedding but that's it for close contact, other than watching from a distance (i'm a horrible mummy i know ) so i've not really noticed anything.
the treatment plan i was given was the same one as in cats, 1 week on, 1 week off, 1 week on, 1 week off, 1 week on, then assess them a week later.
so i've another 4 weeks or so to go before i'll even consider hoping they've cleared up.

you're not alone thinking the outcome looks bleak - but hang on in there!
give the meds tome to work & just keep disinfecting everything carefully
it's what i have to keep telling myself/doing at the moment

I've used itrafungol before in a piggy and she cleared up with no problems whatsoever after 2 weeks of dosing (though it was a high dose she was on and i was still using creams once a day to soothe her sores)
so i have faith in the medication.

sadly it's not a miracle cure though, definitely needs the time to work
prepare yourself to go through at least another week of dosing

I know exactly what you mean! As mine are so new I want to show them off to everyone but they all think they're manky...hubby doesn't do animals so you can imagine the comments there!

I did wonder about the cream aswell, but it was a nurse who showed me the medication and she said not to cream at the same time. Might try one a day as opposed to the three times.

with them being so young i'd be wary of using the creams too, especially when the itrafungol can be hard on their systems

maybe switch to a "plain" cream, like an aloe vera gel, just to soothe the area, rather than necessarily to treat it

Clarabel was at least a year old, possibly more when i was treating her (and unbeknownst to me - pregnant with three pups!) so the extra drugs weren't too much of a worry, obviously if i'd known she was pregnant, i wouldn't have used anything so harsh on her at all, but you just have to do your best with the information you have
