i noticed in a local newspaper a vet who has decided to start businesses coming to peoples houses savves people going to vets. she is coming today to check my two piggies over and nail cut both of them i dont know how much other people pay but she has a 17.50 call out fee and general check over and nail cut for both piggies 7.50

yeah that seems pretty good. i think i pay £17 for a consultation / check-up per pig at the vets and it's £7.50 per pig for their nails trimmed, so that's much cheaper than my vets x

:o £31.95 to see a vet here, whether its a great dane or a hamster!

£25 something for a nail clip with a vet, £9.50 with a nurse.

That's at the vets where I work - and they still say I can't have a pay rise rolleyes

jeez! :{

She came and in the end, it was £13.50 for 2 check-ups and both piggie's nail trimmed. And the boys were as good as gold for her, unlike when I do their nails... :)

That's very good it seems to me, and so nice to have a home visiting vet, much less stressful for the piggies.

Does she have a practice where she's based? I was thinking what if a piggy needed an operation or anything, would she have somewhere to do it, or would she refer you to another vet?

Yeah thats what I was thinking too, in theory it sounds great, but if she needed to dispense medicines etc how would that work? And operations would be impossible to do in homes. I'm not even sure how she would be able to get insurance if she's treating animals in peoples homes.

If it helps my latest trip to the vets for Athena cost £45.85 which consisted of the consultation fee, an antibiotic injection, a weeks course of antibiotics, a weeks course of some other thing I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, some critical care and some probiotics. I've always felt my vets were very reasonable in what they charge though, things like doing tests on urine for diabetes, spinning the urine down to check for crystals etc has always been included in the consultation fee.

My vets is £30 for a consultation fee aswell!
Does your vets do exotics aswell!?

Our new vets specialise in exotics and a consultation/health check is £25 per pig but if you take them all in together ( well, I took my four ) it's £40 rather than £100 ... phew!... :)

she does consultations and can do all the general stuff but if the animal needs a op or exrays she has got a thing going with a vet she has been a vet for 5 years but decide to do home visits due to older generation people with out cars . i have tried to do my piggies nails but i get little nips or foot tugging and freddie nails are black so dont like doing them she came and their feet were out snip snip snip not a murmer. good as gold so i dont know if they were in shock because a stranger was doing them or they know they can play me up

Lol! They probably know they can play you up! ;)

the vets we go to has free guinea pig consultations to improve the welfare of guinea pigs but i dont think thats very common :)

I think that should be the practise everywhere :)

I can't complain, I pay £9.95 for a consultation and very little for meds, baytril for 10 days is usually around a fiver so £15 all in. She's the best guinea vet I've found too.
