Jasmine slowly losing weight

Come on little Jasmine keep munching.x
One of my piggies took a few days to really start eating properly after his surgery.
So fingers crossed Jasmine has a speedy recovery and munching little a little monster soon.xx.
Thank you! That's very reassuring. :)

Today's update:

No change. :( Jasmine still isn't eating by herself and only passing a few small poops, so they're still syringe feeding her. The vet will call me again later today with another update and more details.

Is this normal? I know it's a major op, but I've read of other guineas eating within hours. I'm hoping now she's made it through the first critical 24 hours that she can only improve... :(

It can take some piggies a while for the anaesthetic to pass through their systems. Once the pain relief has kicked in it can still take some piggies a day or 2 before they feel like eating again on their own. Plus they can be a bit depressed after surgery, particularly if they are on their own in a strange place. It’s true that some bounce right back, but similarly I have had to syringe feed several of my pigs for several days after a procedure. Are they prepared to let her come home with you and see of that helps her to perk up ?

Yes, the vet (not the usual one) asked me that yesterday, but I thought it best she stay there at the time. Pickle made it through the op, but passed away the following day, so I wanted Jasmine to stay in hospital with vets on hand. Unfortunately Leo and Jynx are neighbours, so it wasn't realistic to take them along for support.

I was hoping to take time off this week, but both my colleagues are on holiday and I'm working a 12-day week to cover them, so I'm not in the best position to syringe feed her frequently. :( I deliberately booked Jasmine in for surgery on a Monday to avoid out-of-hours with the vet.

I guess I'll see what the regular vet says later today. Thanks for the support!

I've heard from the vet again already. They were very reassuring and said I shouldn't be worried. Although she's not passing a lot of poops and not eating by herself, her guts are healthy and making the right sounds. The antibiotics may be suppressing her appetite too, so they're going to keep her in until she starts to eat again by herself and assess each day as it comes. I'm feeling a bit better about it!

Glad to hear her guts are working as they should! Now you only need to start munching, Jasmine🤞🏼 It’s such a stressful time when they‘re not eating as they should. Keeping you in my thoughts!

Jasmine is still not eating as much as we would like, but the vet thinks her appetite may improve if she came home. All the signs are otherwise fine, so I'm picking her up this evening! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

They're providing me with some sachets to syringe feed her with as they're higher in fibre than the Emeraid I have. She should eat 8-10ml of it each day across four feeds, and I don't need to get up in the night, thank goodness!

Jasmine is still on the Forketor for her kidneys and Cerenia for her bladder, plus long-term Metacam, and she'll have a follow-up appointment in 7-10 days.

Jasmine is a bit of a picky eater anyway; if I give her something she doesn't want, she'll decline it until I offer her something better!

Yay! :hug:So pleased she’s coming home! Hopefully she’ll tuck in as soon as she’s had her catch up with the neighbours, bet Leo will be chuffed to see her! Go Jasmine! :luv:
Glad you don’t have to get up in the night either after all your long days recently! :D x

Haha, yeah, me too! I explained my current situation to the vet and they've been understanding about it! I'm sure Leo will be rumbling as soon as he realises she's home again!

I’m glad to hear Jasmine will be home this evening. Hopefully being in a more familiar environment will do the trick.

Wonderful to hear your girl is coming home this evening. I hope you’ve stocked up on all her favourite goodies in honour of her return?

And here she is!

She was very still and quiet on the journey home and the carrier felt very light, so I wondered if she was actually in it!

I opened the carrier and greeted her, so she knew it was me, then placed her carrier into her cage. She was out straight away checking where everything was, said hello to Leo and Jynx, then after inspecting her queendom, she's flopped very happily onto her throne (i.e. top of the ramp).

It's good to be home!
