JellyBean, our little 1-month-old boar, got his head stuck in one of the squares of the cage divider. I was really worried! Katie and Oreo were panicking and trying to help him, and I had to call my mother to help me find the wire cutters. Thank God he was able to breathe, or else we would've lost him! He seems okay, breathing, and I think he was eating a little when I gave him some celery leaves, but he's traumatized. All he is doing now is laying there by himself and breathing very quickly. Seeing him like this hurts.. I don't know any vets that work on guinea piggies where I am.. Most of them only work on cats and dogs. I'm just hoping he will be okay. I mean, I'd be traumatized, too, right after that, but I'm worried that he's gonna stop eating or drinking.. I took the liberty to replace that part of the divider and then cover the bottom of the divider up, so he can't stick his head through there anymore. Oreo and Katie seem fine, but I don't know if JellyBean will ever be the same happy little guinea Piggie again.. ;( 20190518_233153.webp

@Giggles The Hyena I'd definitelt recommend a vet visit as he may have injured himself which is causing him to struggle to breathe.

It's not recommended to use grids for smaller pigs so I'd replace them or if you have enough put a second layer over them not lining the holes up so it makes the gaps smaller.

aww poor thing.... give him a cuddle and see if his breathing improves - if not - get him to a vet to be checked over - any vet will do x

A vet trip will help to check if anything is wrong.
If it’s just shock he will recover with time, patience and lots of tlc

Poor thing, that must have been so scary for both of you :( however the grids aren’t meant for young guinea pigs simply because they’re so small they can fit through and hurt themselves. Where in the UK do you live? For me, I have to travel almost an hour to see my exotic vet so be prepared to possibly have to do the same! I think it’s very important he does see a vet though, he may have done some damage however it could just be shock. Better to be safe than sorry!

He seems to be breathing fine. He is just traumatized like in shock. Now, he's perking up a bit more. He's eating, which is good. I covered up the bottom of the divider, so this doesn't happen again. Only thing is that Oreo is eating at it to get to Katie lol. JellyBean is starting to perk up, though. :) I gave him some celery leaves right after we for him out. He ate those, and now, he's eating his hay. I'm relieved.

I don't live in UK. I live in US. But I don't know of any vets in my city that work in guinea piggies. :( But I think it was just shock as JellyBean seems to be perking up and eating his hay. He used to be able to squeeze on through the grids as a pup, but he stopped once he for bigger. This is the first he's gotten his head stuck. In the meantime, I put something down to cover the bottom, so he won't be able to do that stunt again. Teenage boys.. Always doing stuff, you know what I mean?

Ah okay, yes exotic vets in the US are definitely more scarce. It’s good that he’s seeming more like himself, once he’s calmed down further just take a quick look at him. Make sure there’s no cuts or anything where he was stuck, also see if his front teeth are okay. Bless him, I know exactly what you mean mine were such pains when they were teens lol

Lol, yeah. Their no different than human teenage boys, always doing stupid stuff. xD But when I get the chance, and if JellyBean stays still when I'm holding him, I might be able to take a look under all that fur. The good thing is he doesn't seem to be bleeding.
